Lesson 1 Group Activity“Land Tenure as a limiting factor.”

• What is land tenure?• In LDCs, who is generally in

control of the land?• Why do the farmers who rent

land tend to not want to make large investments?

Page 3: Sec 4 pure t2wk3 activity

In your groups, discuss the 3 questions that were listed above.

You should include• A real world example• Clear explanations of the following • Land tenure• Landlord• Limitations to tenant developing the

land.

• Using foolscap paper, craft the answers to the

following questions. You have 15 minutes.

1. Farmers in LDCs like Indonesia are often tenants who rent the land from the government. Such farmers are often unwilling to make investments to improve their productivity. Briefly explain why this may be so. [5m]

Individual Work

Page 6: Sec 4 pure t2wk3 activity

• Indonesian Farmers often rent the land they farm on from either the government or large landholders.

• They do not own the land they cultivate and at times they pay substantial amounts of rental.

• The tenure is not secure and can be terminated at short notice.

• This leads to uncertainty in the tenant and hence they are unwilling to make investments in the field.

• This is because they are afraid that their investments will not be able to have time to generate positive returns.

Lesson 2 Group Activity• In your groups, create a story to illustrate land

fragmentation.

• You have 20 minutes to prepare.• Your story must not take more than 3 minutes.• It must start with “In a Less Developed

Country located near the Equator… …”• It must end with “ thus, the brothers all went

to live in the city slum instead.”

Lesson 4 Individual Activity“Purpose of farming.”

•Take out your homework.•Let’s look through the question together.

Page 18: Sec 4 pure t2wk3 activity

1.Explain what is Subsistence Farming. (3m)• Farming for the sole purpose of

personal consumption.• Small scale farming / animal

husbandry.• Mixed farming to meet the dietary

needs of the tribe / family.

Page 19: Sec 4 pure t2wk3 activity

2.Explain what is Commercial Farming. (3m)

• Farming for the sole purpose of economic profit.

• No consumption of the product at all. • Large scale farming / animal rearing.• Common use of technology, high capital

investments.• Large Corn/Wheat farms in USA.

Page 20: Sec 4 pure t2wk3 activity

3. With the aid of examples, explain how demand can lead to a change in the production of an agricultural product like corn. (5m)• With the rapid development of countries like China and

India, there is an increase in the demand for meat protein.

• The rise in demand for livestock leads to commercial farming and demand for animal feed.

• Commercial animals are fed cornmeal.• There is a corresponding increase in the demand for

corn to satisfy the increase in demand for meat protein.• Root cause is the change in taste and preference which

leads to the change in intensity of production and even demand for goods through trade.

Page 21: Sec 4 pure t2wk3 activity

4. With the aid of examples, explain how Agribusiness run a farm differently from a small scale commercial farmer. (4m)

• Agribusiness are large farming companies involved with most industries in a food supply chain.

• They operate the farm, processing and retailing.• There is a large focus on scientific innovation in farming.• Size of the company makes it able to absorb impact of

crop yield variations due to environmental factors.– Tyson Chicken, State Farm, etc

• Small scale commercial farmers tend to only operate on one part of the food supply chain.

• They are more prone to market forces and variations.

Page 22: Sec 4 pure t2wk3 activity

5. Explain the difference between Agricultural policy and Food policy that a government can adopt. (5m)

Agricultural Policy• Policies that affect domestic

agriculture.• Decision on use of resources

(landuse allocation and monetary subsidy)

• Decision on intensity of food production.

• 2012 Indian farmer education programme, seed choice, pesticide and irrigation.

Food Policy• Decisions that affect food

production, processing, distribution, packaging and storage.

• Singapore stockpiles rice as a key staple food source to hedge against price fluctuation and diseases.
