WELCOME TO HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
There are so many moments that stand out in my mind over the last 35 years of Seattle Men’s Chorus holiday concerts. But some of
you may remember December 1981 when Meany Hall was packed for the first SMC holiday-themed concert. Having just mounted our Moore Theatre extravaganza, Buckboards to Bernstein, weeks earlier, we did extra rehearsals to present the yuletide concert as a thank-you to our community. The rest is history.
During these last 35 holidays together, thousands of you have become members of our audience family. Each year I smile at many of the same faces and recognize
many of your distinctive voices laughing or joining in during the sing-along.
This year’s Home for the Holidays remains, first and foremost, our seasonal gift to our audience. In this concert you’ll hear many of my favorite selections from years past, such as Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium,” and “What If Carols.” Other repertoire like “Jingle Bells Hallelujah,” “Text Me Merry Christmas,” and “Christmas Rhapsody” are new favorites.
So crank up your Holiday spirit, grab your neighbor’s hand, and join in the fun during the sing-along. Enjoy the concert.
Dennis Coleman, Artistic Director
Greetings and Happy Holidays! I am very excited that you have joined us for Dennis’ last Holiday concert series. During the past few months,
many of you have inquired about our future artistic direction and I thought I would give an update.
Our search committee, which consists of board members, singers, and community members, has been working since this past June to recruit a new artistic leader. Our job posting attracted many diverse applicants (literally from all over the world) and the search committee has invited the most promising candidates to participate in a series of interviews that will narrow the field down to a select group of final candidates. During the various rounds of interviews, the search committee explored the candidates’ qualifications from their conducting technique, musical philosophy and
programming style, to their vision for the future of the LGBTQ community.
This winter we will bring our final candidates in for a last round of interviews with the search committee, board, and staff. They will also rehearse both SWC and SMC, giving our membership an opportunity to provide feedback to the Board of Directors before a new artistic director is named later in the spring. We’ll be sure you are among the first to know — stay tuned!
While we will greatly miss Dennis’ leadership — we are also very excited about what the future holds. However, tonight please sit back and enjoy the concert as Dennis brings you Home for the Holidays one final time.
With warmest holiday greetings,
Bob Davidson,President – Board of Directors
WELCOME TO HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Let me add my voice to our chorus of welcome. Thank you for helping us celebrate the season!
‘Tis the season to give back
AND have fun. You will have many opportunities during intermission and after the show to find a member waving tickets so you can participate in our annual Holiday Raffle. How can you not take a chance or three to win a brand new Subaru…or a Holland America cruise…or a Rick Steves tour…or first class tickets on Alaska Airlines? These prizes are amazing (with huge thanks to our sponsors)! Tickets are just $10 per chance, the odds are pretty good, and best of all, 100% of the proceeds support our mission to bring more harmony and greater acceptance to the Pacific Northwest. We appreciate your generosity and wish you good luck!
I’m grateful to our season subscribers, our donors, and our generous sponsors and underwriters for making this concert season possible. A year of festive entertainment and surprises continues as we honor Dennis Coleman’s legacy. Next up is the fabulous Seattle Women’s Chorus production, February 26-28, that will bring new meaning to the word “Camp.” The men are back on April 2 & 3 with a showtunes extravaganza that can only be called Everything Broadway. Tickets are on sale now.
You’re the reason we sing, so thanks again for being here and for your support. We hope you’ll tell a friend and share the joy! All of us in the Chorus family wish you a new year filled with good health and abundant love.
See you in the lobby,
Steven F. Smith,Executive Director

WHO’S WHODennis ColemanArtistic Director, Flying House Productions
Dennis Coleman was appointed conductor of Seatt le Men’s Chorus in May, 1981, less than two years after the organiza-t ion ’s found ing . Under Coleman’s
leadership, the Chorus grew quickly in membership size and audience attendance and soon became well-known throughout the region for their entertaining and musi-cally varied concerts. Now, after three decades as Artistic Director, Coleman is rec-ognized nationally as a founder of the LGBT choral movement and has led Flying House Productions to a position as one of the most successful and largest community chorus organizations in the country. Coleman also serves as the founding Artistic Director of Seattle Women’s Chorus, which has matured musically and established their own audience base.
Together, SMC and SWC sing with a combined membership larger than the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, a distinction in which Coleman delights. Coleman has served on the national Board of Directors for Chorus America and was a founding Board member for GALA Choruses. He has received numerous awards including the 2010 Mayor’s Arts Award and the establishment of a scholarship fund for LGBT music students that is managed by the Pride Foundation. In August 2014 he acted as Choral Director for Gay Games 9 in Cleveland. As a UCC church musician, Coleman has conducted the choir of First Congregational Church of Bellevue since 1981. The 50-voice choir has toured Europe three times, New Zealand in 2005, South Africa in 2008, Peru in 2011, and Croatia in 2014.
Steven F. SmithExecutive Director, Flying House Productions
Steven F. Smith has provided transfor-mative leadership for a diverse array of per forming ar t s organizations. Most recently he served as Executive Director of
Revels, a $1.4M multidisciplinary theater company, where he led a successful finan-cial turnaround and revitalized the audi-ence, growing attendance by 21% over a four year period. From 1995-2010 he led the acclaimed Boston Gay Men’s Chorus through an unprecedented period of growth in which he tripled its annual audi-ence and grew its budget four-fold. Earlier positions included production for Northeastern Univers i ty’s Music Department and coordinating the resi-dency of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts. Steve also managed an international roster of concert organists and English cathedral choirs for Karen McFarlane Artists Management. Steve has consulted with over a dozen small and midsized non-profits and given seminars on strategic planning, audience develop-ment, and fundraising for ArtsBoston, Greater Boston Choral Consortium, GALA Choruses, and Chorus America. In recent years he has served multiple terms as a board member and officer for ArtsBoston, GALA Choruses, and the Greater Boston Choral Consortium. He is a magna cum laude graduate of the Arts Management program at Baldwin-Wallace University and was selected by the Massachusetts Cultural Council to attend the Achieving Excellence Executive Leadership Program for cultural organiza-tions at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Who you fall in love with is not a choice. How you fly with them is.
Alaska has been a longtime supporter of the Seattle LGBT community, and we’re proud of all the recent progress we’ve seen. But our commitment to equality just keeps getting stronger. HRC recently named us one of the Best Places to Work. And with LGBT discounts to destinations like San Diego, Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta and New Orleans, we’re one of the best places to shop for flights, too. Learn more at alaskaair.com/gaytravel.

ESTATE DONORSThe following have included Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus as a beneficiary in their estate planning. If you are interested in joining them in supporting our mission in this way, please contact our office at 206.323.0750.
The following are individuals of vision who provided for the future of Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus by designating a gift from their estate. IN MEMORIAM SMCI’ve seen your eyes, they always look onward toward a time, a season known to none but you. The dream you envisioned was to look forever, forever, forever. And in remembrance of you, I will look onward. Your dream will live as I look onward always, always, always onward. —From Eulogy by Scott Warrender (Commissioned by SMC in 1985)
