In this range of seats and benches good design has been coupled with high quality materials to give modern

styling, whilst maintaining durability and vandal resistance.

When ordering seating units, it is important to note that a seat is defined as a seat with backrest and a bench

with no backrest.

The Toledo seat has a strong North American influence in its design,

using sturdy section wooden slats on unpretentious steel supports. Each

slat is secured by coachbolts with the added refinement of pin-locking

to prevent removal. The timber offered is African hardwood in natural

finish. Choice of below or on ground fixing. Co-ordinated bench, litter

bin and planter are also available.

The Bradmore seat is available in two versions, a high back and a low

back, depending on personal preference. The seats and bench may be

bolted to the ground to suit site circumstances. On both seats and the

bench, an all steel support protects the slat ends, giving a streamlined

effect, with pin locking security to fixing. The slats are of selected, treated

hardwood. A Bradmore litter bin is also available. Standard finish on

the Bradmore range is a dark brown semi-gloss polyester powder

coating on the steel sections with a Malaysian Sapele timber for the

slats giving an overall co-ordinated look.

The Shannon seat is manufactured entirely from

steel. It can be supplied with or without armrests

and a double sided bench version is also

available, with an arched profile to deter vagrants

from sleeping on the bench. The Shannon range

is lightweight and can be bolted to the ground for

extra security.

The Commander Range of bollards has

been an undoubted success in the

market place and consequently to

extend this design connotation, a seat

and litter bin is now offered.

The seat is a modern design which will

look particularly attractive on most sites.

The six slats are of Emeri timber which

have been preservative treated, mounted

on two steel supports and embellished

with the three stripe Commander

insignia. The two steel seat ribs are

finished in the same colour as the

supports and the stripes on the

supports are usually highlighted with a

contrasting colour.

The seat can be on ground fix by base

plate, in-ground fix by extending the

leg or can be produced to suit the

adjustable/removable boot system which

allows for siting the seat on a slope or

removal of the seat for maintenance or

repair if damaged.

Dream Seat

CAST IRON SEATING

The Dream seat is designed by Pierluigi Molinari from Italy and is manufactured from the special grating

produced by the Italian company Orsogril. This grating, which is patented, is extremely robust and vandal

resistant. The ends are cloaked with steel providing a rigid and robust seat body. The legs and underframe are

produced in aluminium alloy with a neat flange bored for bolting to the ground.

The shape of the seat allows a comfortable and relaxed position. A co-ordinating Dream bench is available.

Both products will enhance all architectural styles of application and are suitable for interior or exterior use.

Both the Dream seat and bench are imported exclusively by Townscape.

In many applications, a bench

without the backrest of a seat is

more practical. This Catton bench

is a simple but attractive design

ideal for educational establish-

ments or leisure parks.

Catton Bench

Viking Seat

The Viking seat ends are manufactured from ductile cast iron giving

added strength yet retaining the outline of an elegant and classical

design. The Viking seat ends cloak the timber slats to give extra

security in addition to the stainless steel fixings. The design of the ends

also offers the advantages of integral armrests and a freestanding style

of leg which has ground fixing points if permanent site fixing is

required. A back rib is featured to ensure maximum stability.

The bench ends are manufactured from ductile

cast iron with two extra wide African hardwood

slats mounted on top giving maximum sitting

space. A spacing beam gives total stability and

the feet have pre-drilled holes for fixing to the

ground.

DINING SETS

ECONOMY SEATING

The Discus is a circular design with a fluted pattern table

top mounted on a steel pedestal with matching seat tops

mounted on arms which are fixed to the central pedestal.

The standard unit is a four seater but two, three, five or six

seater units can be produced to special order. Permanently

fixed below ground, the Discus is a modern and practical

dining unit.

The Rufford Folder is designed to combat the British

climate. The steel frame allows the seat section to be lifted

up and folded on to the table top thereby keeping the

seat dry and clean. This feature is also useful for winter

storage. A freestanding unit, the Rufford can seat up to ten

people although a smaller

version can be produced

to special order.

A non-folding version can

also be supplied.

The Charlton Dining set has

been developed to meet

market demand for a heavy

duty dining set which is

both functional and attrac-

tive. The set is made up of

a table and two benches

which can be ragbolted to

the ground at the desired

spacing. An in-ground fixing leg detail can be supplied to special order. The Charlton is ideal for fast food

restaurants, leisure centres, hotels or public house outside dining areas or any other area with a requirement

for seating crowds to eat food in an ‘al fresco’ situation. The square hollow section legs on the table and

benches are of a welded construction in mild steel and the timber slats are of Malaysian sapele hardwood. For

extra security, all coach screws are complemented with an anti-vandal locking pin.

These three designs have been produced to a specification which retains all the Townscape quality features yet

bulk purchasing allows savings to be made. All seats can be on ground or below ground fixed.

The Torro Seat is an unusual design and can suit both old and new environmental applications. The seat ends

are produced in cast aluminium with hardwood slats.

The Zeta Seat has ductile cast iron ends providing this seat with added vandal resistance. A neat design offering

great comfort when seated. The slats are of hardwood timber.

The Riva Seat is a streamlined and functional design well suited to modern architectural applications. Sturdy

construction with steel ends and hardwood slats. A co-ordinated Riva bench is also available.

Perch seating has become popular in areas where there is a high

density of passengers waiting short periods of time for transport.

Known as rapid transport seating, this range of four designs is ideal

for bus or train stations, waiting areas or even cafe bars.

These designs are extremely adaptable and are all manufactured

from steel, as a result, the seat height and length can be altered to

suit site requirements. Armrests and handgrips can be addded as

optional extras. Fixing can be on ground or below ground to

customer order.

The Shelter perch has the advantage of a back rest which gives a

little more comfort. It is manufactured from flat oval tube and is an

all welded construction.

The Tubular perch design is surprisingly comfortable and can be

produced in longer runs with a split level if required. This gives a

length of seating for adults and a lower level suitable for children.

Perforated steel is used for the seating surface of the Voltan perch.

This perch bench is part of the Voltan range and

therefore offers the option of co-ordinated seats,

planters, litter bins and picnic sets. Please

refer to the Voltan brochure for more

details.

The Milan perch bench is a unique design

of perch in that it offers a footrest which is

surprisingly comfortable. The bench is

produced by Orsogril and their patented

grating is used on the bench body and

footrest, these two components are then

mounted on a steel frame to provide a high

level of stability and ridgity.

The bench body has a generous curve

giving support to the user. This striking

design is suitable for all rapid transport

seating applications. Imported exclusively

by Townscape.

Ductile cast iron and timber are the two main raw

materials used in the Baltimore seats and benches.

The Baltimore seats remain unique in terms of their

classical timeless design combined with superior

strength and quality.

The seat and bench are offered in two formats -

standard and heavy duty. The design has become

a top of the market seat suitable for all types of

environment applications.

Co-ordinated products are also available. Please

VOLTAN RANGEThis co-ordinated range of street furniture comprises many

seating options as well as litter bins and planters. Manufactured

from perforated steel, with circular perforations Voltan seating

has an unparalleled combination of comfort, elegance and

strength.

The Voltan Mainline is now available as a two, three or four

seater unit and the bench as a one, two or three seater unit.

Wall mounting brackets are also offered as well as a wide choice

of leg options.

The Trio combined with Super Single seats can provide endless

possibilities for multiple seating layouts in either straight lines or

on a radius. Tables can be interspersed at required intervals.

Several designs of diner sets feature in the Voltan range and there are four

options of Rotunda formats to be used as tree surrounds or other decorative seating and planting features.

This range now has a proven record of performance and is widely used throughout Europe and other overseas

countries. For more detailed information, please refer to the Voltan brochure.

The Metro M.I. seat has been designed for mobility impaired people in consultation with the Accessible

Transport Officer from the Passenger Transport Section of the Planning Department of Essex County Council.

This collaboration is typical of Townscape’s policy of developing partnerships with their customers to meet

specific needs.

The ergonomic features of the design, while meeting the requirements of the mobility impaired public, also

provide high levels of comfort for the able-bodied. This means that whole sites can be furnished without the

need for designating areas of segregated seating which is discriminatory, and has the additional benefit of

simplifying ordering and installation.

The key features that have been designed to assist the mobility impaired person are the seat height of 455mm,

the broad flat horizontal armrests and the careful balance between the shallow pitch of the seat and the angle of

the backrest. These elements work together to facilitate ease of entry to and exit from the seat while giving

secure comfortable support when seated.

The design is available in a choice of four main underframe types; two

on-ground one in-ground and another wall mounted. The options

can further be extended by a back-to-back version formed by two

wall-mounting units bolted to a sturdy in-ground square section post.

A companion product is the Metro litter bin which is formed by two match-

ing perforated sheet metal components joined and supported by a U-

form echoing the theme of the broad seat armrest.

In their Millennium seat designs Townscape anticipate trends for the new Century by building on the success of

the comfortable Voltan seat body-shell by the inclusion of a new and exclusive Millennium motif punching.

The punching motif is in the shape of a slot and half slot making the impression of a stylised ‘M’ to indicate

Millennium.

The new designs are currently available in the Mainline, Trio and Super Single formats offering a seating range

which is high on style, quality and durability. The seat bodies are constructed from 2mm perforated sheet and

formed to a shape which has been extensively researched for posture comfort and support.

The dramatic sweep of the curved leg is a design highlight but also gives stability to the seat, which can be

freestanding because of the leg design or can be fixed to the ground by the fixing tab which is pre-drilled. The

legs are bolted to the seat frame providing a strong and rigid unit.

The armrests, which are optional, have been designed to co-ordinate with the legs and when used together, the

overall design is given its full impact.

The Super Single 525 and 410 designs can be used for any of the Townscape beam-mounted formats.

These design features extend the product’s abil-

ity to interior as well as exterior sites and the com-

fort level is further enhanced for interior use by

the availability of upholstered seat pads which are

firmly fixed as an integral part of the seat shell.

In addition two co-ordinated litter bins are now

available.

Citizen Mainline Seat Hedra Seat

CITIZEN RANGE

The Citizen seating range has three seat and three bench options based on matching prestige concrete base

units. The Hedra seat and bench are made of a heavy duty African hardwood section in either Sapele or Emeri.

The treatment of the hardwood also enhances the richness of the grain which complements the fine 6mm

natural aggregates of the Prestige mix, resulting in a product which combines a robust construction with an

aesthetic profile.

The Voltan bench, Mainline seat and Trio seat-shells which are used as universal elements of both the Voltan

and Citizen ranges offer a distinctive stylistic option by combining polyester coated perforated metal with the

refined Prestige concrete finish.

The standard concrete base units provide a stable freestanding

support for both seats and benches in supervised areas. Where the

integral bevelled concrete foot detail could cause damage to the

floor surface, this can be omitted in favour of separate high-density

urethane pads bolted to the bottom of the concrete bases. In unsu-

pervised areas provision can be made for on or in-ground fixing.

Co-ordinating litter bins and planters are also available.

The Jet bench follows the growing popularity towards

all-concrete items of street furniture with a smooth ‘granite’

type visual surface finish. This modern streamlined bench

has two pedestal supports and a solid slab top making a

sturdy but simple and attractive bench unit that will blend to

any kind of environment and requires minimal maintenance.

11

Page 14: Seating Issue 01

Vandal resisting properties are of considerable importance in the choice of

seating for public places. In this range of concrete seats and benches, good

design has been coupled with sheer ruggedness to give modern styling whilst

maintaining durability. The Lindrick, Thornton and Maidstone seats are

to standard local authority specification, but the Maidstone has an extra

refinement of sturdier designed cantilevers to give a much stronger support.

The Thornton is provided with threaded inserts in the base for permanent

fixing to the ground if required.

Where it is found necessary for even greater durability, the Hounslow seat

and Eastbourne bench are built to a substantially higher specification and

have extra thickness on the timber slats.

All seat ends are available in exposed aggregate, smooth white or plain grey

finish. It is however, worth noting that the rougher exposed aggregate

surface is less easily vandalised.

All timber slats are machined from quality hardwood originating from

husbanded forests of Africa. This timber is exceptionally smooth to the touch

and will generally keep its shape when left out in the British climate. The slats

are treated and supplied complete with plated fittings and pellets for

counterbores.

The Variform range of products provides a wide

range of options to create seating and table

areas. It is ideal for all kinds of leisure

applications although there is no reason why it

cannot be used in any environmental situation.

The seats and tables can be

both above or below ground

fixing. Special shapes or

lengths, for example a tree

surround, can be produced to

customer requirements.

Planting units and litter bins

from the Townscape range will

also complement all Variform

items.

CONCOURSE

RANGEThe range relies on the use of two basic units, a circular unit and an

interlocking unit, linking together horizontally. The interlocking unit

is of similar dimensions to the circular unit, but with two equal and

opposite arcuate portions removed allowing it to mate two adjoining

circular units. The concave surfaces of the interlocking unit engages

with the convex surfaces of the circular unit, preventing lateral

movement, providing stability, and allowing flexibility in layout. The

interlocking design is protected by British Patent No. 2077796.

Each of the circular and interlocking units comprises a base,

bottom ring and extension ring. These rings are designed to receive

component parts such as seats and litter tops.

Seating is designed to bolt on to interlocking and circular units.

Hardwood or G.R.P. squab seats can be added to a single circular or

interlocking unit which is at the ideal sit-upon height. Alternatively a

hardwood straddle bench can be fitted between a pair of circular units,

although the method of fixing will restrict the degree of flexibility.

In pedestrian precincts a unified layout can be obtained providing

secluded seating areas with decorative physical barriers to guide

pedestrians and prevent vehicular access. Their flexibility allows them

to follow a curved carriageway edge serving as a guard-rail and

planting display.

Materials And Finishing

All steel parts conform to BS4360 43A or 43C.

During their finishing process, steel products will be shotblasted to SA 2.5/

3.0 or acid cleaned prior to electro zinc plating. This process will provide

an even deposit of zinc and zinc alloy over the whole surface of the

material. The product is then chrome passivated and rinsed,

this improves the surface finish and ensures maximum

chemical adhesion of subsequent polyester finishes. Plating

is applied to a minimum thickness of 15 microns. The

sacrificial and sealing action of the zinc prevents any rust

staining if severely damaged.

All cast iron parts are produced in SG iron BS,EN 1563:1997, a ductile material. This means they will not break

under impact. Cast iron products undergo two fettling and two shotblasting processes to remove all surface

imperfections and surface contamination. A two pack epoxy grey primer is then applied with d.f.t. of 50/75

microns. This paint conforms to BS 5493 and BS4652 Type 3. It will withstand exterior exposure for three years

and will not break down at 2000 hours salt spray testing.

Cast Iron

Stainless steel plate used for the construction of seating conforms to specification for grade 316 BS 1449 part 2.

This is an austenitic steel, non magnetic, has a high tensile strength and offers the best corrosion resistance. A

240 grit or Satin finish as standard.

Stainless Steel

Following their priming process, steel and cast iron products are polyester

powder coated by electrostatic process which ensures complete coverage.

The coating is then cured in heated ovens under controlled conditions to give

a very hard wearing surface finish with excellent resistance to exterior exposure.

The combined system will give a minimum thickness of 90 microns, this ensures

that when severely damaged, the polyester coating will not lift. Additionally

the sacrificial and sealing action of the zinc layer will prevent unsightly brown

rust staining.

The polyester powder has been thoroughly tested under controlled conditions.

Samples tested for resistance to salt spray, humidity and water soak at 40

degrees centigrade showed no breakdown and were resistant to most acids,

alkalis and oils. Exterior exposure tests to BS 3900 Part 2 showed minimal loss

of gloss and colour after 2000 hours. Similar results were obtained with

a 12 month Florida exposure (45 degree angle).

The range of colours offered by Townscape have been developed combining the latest polyester resin and

pigment technology to produce a product with excellent decorative effect and superior outdoor durability.

ConcreteCements used in manufacture are Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) or White Portland Cement (Snowcrete) all

of which comply with BS12;1991. Aggregates are naturally occurring materials, crushed or uncrushed,

complying with the quality requirements of BS 882 : 1992 or alternatively coarse aggregates which comply

with clause 5 of BS 1047 : 1983.

All quarried materials vary from time to time in colour and

texture, these variations however do not affect the technical

soundness of the product. Colour of aggregates may also

vary when in a wet or dry state.

The batching of concrete is carried out in modern weigh-

batching machinery, computer controlled, with probes in

all aggregates to ensure careful control of water content.

The result is consistent batching to uniform specification.

The accuracy of the products is ensured by the use of high

quality master patterns and then moulds used in the casting

operation. Each product is vibrocast and subsequently hand

finished ensuring conformity of surface finish.

For a sheet steel with the stainless steel appearance the Brightex finish has been developed. The base material

is mild steel and can be plate or perforated. A cleaning and plating process followed by a polyester powder

coating of clear lacquer creates the final finish.

Brightex

Extruded aluminium and castings are included in the range of products offered. Aluminium alloys have a gen-

erally high resistance to the effects of atmospheric exposure and have a weight advantage over other materials.

The material receives a two pack epoxy primer prior to powder coating.

Aluminium

All Townscape products require a minimum of maintenance and aftercare. A regular inspection to verify ground

fixings and inspection of the finished coatings of both metal and timber components is essential. Damage to

paintwork can be remedied by application of a suitable primer and topcoat with compatible products.

It should also be noted that after outdoor exposure, all treated timbers can fade through the action of sunlight,

rain and stain migration. To restore timber components to their original condition and maintain the level of

wood preservation, a regular maintenance programme must be established.

Maintenance

All timbers are machined from quality hardwood originating from

carefully husbanded forests of Africa and Malaysia. The timber is

exceptionally smooth grained, however, all hardwoods are

susceptible to splits and shakes appearing over the course of time.

All timber components are coated with high quality wood treatment

before assembly and despatch.

It should be noted that all manmade or natural materials will lose some of their original qualities over a period

of time due to the effects of exposure to the sun or ultra-violet rays (UV). The pigment and paint system

researched and developed by Townscape are to the highest specification and will give exceptional retention of

original colour for many years. The resins are UV stable and the pigments are UV fast. Typical results for

intensive testing show the white paint to satisfy a 3 year Florida test with no creaming or chalking.
