With its clever use of space, high roofline and

multi-positional seats, the SEAT Altea was born

ready. As the name suggests, the Altea XL is

longer. And with its extra 123 litres of space the

new Altea XL shares all of the Altea’s qualities,

and then some. It’s a car that welcomes the

family with open doors.

IT’S noT juST ThE cAR ThAT’S LongER.

The Altea XL’s colour range has been extended

(inside and out). The wheel range has been

extended too. Like the headlights, the grill and

front bumpers have been redesigned.

naturally, a roof-rack is still standard. you see,

as well as being longer, the Altea XL is a car with

more up top.

hEADLIghTS ThAT Run In ThE fAmILy.

As with all SEAT headlights, you have the option

to choose Bi-Xenon, which is brighter than

conventional halogen light, and consequently

less tiring for the driver’s eyes. Those headlights

come with an Adaptive front-lighting System

(AfS) and Daytime Running Lights (DRL), whilst

foglights include a cornering function (more

about all those later). heated side mirrors are

electrically-adjustable, folding neatly into

‘parking position’ (and out of harm’s way). The

wipers are just as well-trained – when not in use

they discreetly disappear into the front pillars.

Should you decide to do a disappearing act of

your own one weekend and head for the mountains,

it’s good to know that the new Altea XL now

comes with the option of four-wheel drive.

When things change outside, optional four-wheel

drive keeps fuss levels to a minimum. Inside,

things take on a rarified air. With its high roofline,

the Altea XL offers more front headroom than

any other car in its class. for legroom in the

back, again, this five-seater is out in front – thanks

to rear seats that can be moved 160 mm. of course,

where kids are concerned, there’s something even

more important than knee room, and that’s elbow

room. Which is why the Altea XL comes with SEAT’s

very own ‘Anti-squabble Zone’ (put another way,

that means an unrivalled amount of space between

the rear passengers). If battle-lines need to be

drawn, it’s a relief to know that they can fold down

the armrest/table, complete with cup-holders.

front seats are fitted with fold-down ‘airplane-style’

seat-back shelves. Rear backrests are adjustable,

allowing the kids to kick back after a hard day’s play

– the perfect excuse, we thought, for ‘one touch’

electric windows all around (with all this talk about

generous amounts of space, it’s only fitting that

their design is known as anti-squeeze).

Multi-positional seats provide the optimum

configuration to suit your needs.

The Altea XL’s additional 18.7cm equals an

extra 123 litres of space, giving it a 532 litre

boot capacity in total (one of the largest in its

class). But here’s where the XL excels.

The rear seats can be positioned in a variety of

ways to suit both kids and cargo. need that extra

bit of room in the boot? Shift one, two or all three

of the seats forward by up to 160 mm (they also

slide backwards by the same amount).

Whichever way you slice it, the Altea XL

is fully flexible.

And electromechanical power steering, which

ensures that steering is light at low speeds and

stiffened at higher speeds, giving a more precise,

sporty feel that connects driver and road. Safer

to mention an electronic limited-slip differential,

linked to an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP)

– if a wheel starts slipping, ESP compensates and

stops it from doing so, significantly improving grip.

The result is greater agility, safety and comfort,

particularly in the curves. Like we said. Responsible.

The Altea XL may be longer at the back, but

we’ve also ensured that it doesn’t fall short up

front. Extra kick is provided by Turbo Stratified

Injection, found in the 6-speed 125 hp 1.4 model

as well as in the 6-speed 160 hp 1.8 version.

The last is also available with a unique 7-speed

Direct Shift gearbox (DSg). With steering

wheel-mounted paddle controls, DSg enables

you to change gear in a blink. DSg is also available

with the 6-speed 140 hp 2.0 TDI, and the 105 hp

1.9 TDI, as is a Diesel Particle filter (DPf), which,

as the name suggests, helps to reduce emissions.

DPf is standard with the manual 170 hp 2.0 TDI.

But this model also benefits from something else

– common Rail engineering, which makes things

quieter, smoother and more efficient. finally,

for those who flicked straight to this page and

have joined us late, the Altea XL now comes with

the option of four-wheel drive in the form of the

105 hp 1.9 TDI.

illumination where you need it most.

until that magical day comes we can promise

something else designed to prevent things

from becoming over-heated – two-zone

climatronic comes as standard in the Style and

Sport, allowing you and your passenger to

select your own perfect temperature. The Style and

Sport models include cruise control as standard

too. you also have the option of hill-hold control,

which stops you from rolling down a slope the

moment before the clutch is engaged.

A gear-shift indicator*, depending on what

mode (and mood) you are in, ensures either a

more sporty drive or maximum efficiency. There

are light sensors, rain sensors and parking

sensors. headlights that can see around curves,

and foglights that can see around corners. give

us some more time on the anti-tantrum device.

New instrument cluster with white graphics. A gear-shift indicator* ensures either

a more sporty drive or maximum efficiency.

Hill-Hold Control prevents you from rolling downhill

before the clutch is engaged.

In designing the Altea range we’ve made every

effort to anticipate your needs. So when dusk

starts to fall, you won’t have to turn on the

headlights – they’ll come on automatically*.

When the first drops of rain hit the windscreen,

the wipers know it’s time to go to work. When

parking, you’ll have the option of front and rear

Remote-controlled door mirrors.

An Optical Parking System (optional) provides visual reference

on the multi-function screen.

Parking Distance control (PDc), which emits a

sonic signal in case you’re getting a little too

close to the car next to you. If you have the SEAT

media System 2.0 you’ll even have the option of an

optical Parking System, which gives you visual

reference on the multi-function display. The new,

multi-function steering wheel includes integrated

(and upgraded) Bluetooth®, which incorporates

a handy agenda function. The instrument

cluster (with fancy new white graphics) is also

new. As is the touchscreen navigation system,

complete with SD card slot and 5” colour screen.

In the Style and Sport models those in the back

row are treated to a fold-down 7” monitor with

DvD and video game capability and fully

integrated iPod® connectivity**. music-wise too,

things are iPod® friendly**.

And mP3-friendly. And there’s a cuP

(combined uSB port/AuX-in). After all, even a

car as clever as this one can’t anticipate how

you like your music.

Front storage compartments include a centre console and stowage bins under the seats.

yeah, things can get messy from time to time,

but we’ve tried to give you a fighting chance

against outright chaos breaking out. In addition

to the storage cases in the front and rear centre

consoles there are storage compartments under

the front seats. And pouches on the driver and

passenger backrests. In the boot, we thought

adjustable webbing, fixing hooks and a double

floor might help too.

Rear storage spaces include seat-back pouches and a centre console.

So we’ve established that the Altea can cope

with whatever life throws at it. how does it cope

with whatever the road throws at it? Again,

anticipation is at the heart of our philosophy.

Bi-Xenon headlights with AfS follow the

corner lights serve a similar purpose – activated

by the indicator signal, they illuminate the area

in the direction you intend to turn. They also make

you more visible to oncoming drivers. for extra

peace of mind, optional Bi-Xenon headlamps

feature Daytime Running Lights (DRL). So what else

keeps trouble at bay? An evermore sophisticated

ESP system works in tandem with an evermore

sophisticated Traction control System (TcS) – the

newest version of which uses sensors in the

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) to prevent

wheelspin at lower speeds as well as higher ones.

That’s enough three-letter acronyms for one page.

Well, just one more. EBA stands for Emergency

Brake Assist, and it’s trick is to provide maximum

braking power from the shortest pedal movement.

just as cleverly, an anti-dazzle rear-view mirror

prevents headlight glare from the car behind.

The XL of course, is part of the Altea family – which

won four Euro ncAP stars for ‘child occupant

Protection’ and five for ‘Adult occupant Protection’

(the highest evaluation there is). iSofix – which

enables two child seats to be anchored directly

to the chassis – is standard. So are six airbags

– two front, two side, two curtain (two optional

rear thorax airbags protect passengers on the

lateral seats). The front passenger airbag can be

disconnected to prevent injury to an infant.

And to prevent injury to all five passengers, the

three-point seatbelts are pre-tensioned – if braking

is forceful, a limiter eases the belt’s tension.
