justice, and to love kindness, and to walk

    From the Pastors Desk

    Cultivating Compassion

Recently, President Obama told the BBC in an interview that

since September 11, 2001, less than 100 Americans have died

from terrorist attacks overseas, yet tens of thousands have died

from gun violence in this country. The Washington Post said

that on day 204 of 2015, there have been 204 incidents of mass

shootings in this country. Where are our priorities as a nation?

Why do we still insist on looking for threats from some other

country when the real menace to our democracy and way of

living is our own ignorance and fear?

Black churches are burning, mass shootings at military bases as

well as theatres and schools, another unarmed African

American shot by a white police officer--where will the violence

end? Where is all this hatred coming from? What are people

    so afraid of?

As a Christian pastor who supports inter-faith dialogue, I am

concerned that we no longer consider human life sacred. All of

human life. Mahatma Gandhi said, Religions are not for

separating people from one another, they are meant to bind

them together. And yet, in todays world, we seem more

fractured than ever by the various faith traditions. In fact,

young people with no religious affiliation are the fastest

growing group in Americain large part because of they see no

reason to participate in archaic rituals with no apparent

connection to the 21st century. Besides, while issues of

sexuality dominate headlines, more important issues of justice

and equality get sidelined. The larger issue, I would suggest, is

that our faith traditions have lost their prophetic voice, and our

young people want to hold us accountable.

Gandhi also challenged us, A small body of determined spirits

Gandhi also challenged us, A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith

in their mission can alter the course of human history. At Grace Good Shepherd, we are that

small body, a body of ecumenical Christians from a Lutheran and Presbyterian perspective that

believes we can make a difference. A voice of Love in the midst of hate, a voice of Peace in the

midst of calls for violence and vengeance, a voice of reason in the midst of all the craziness and

madness in this world. Let us be the spirit of life and love that can never be overcome by hate

or violence. Jesus calls us to take up the cross of nonviolence resistance and show the world

another waylike the forgiveness shown by the families of the victims in South Carolina.

Forgiveness, love and grace ultimately took down the confederate flagnot more guns and

violenceand it is what will heal us all.

In the next month, Lynn will be filming for a documentary on racism. Anyone willing to share

their personal stories, please contact him at 928.209.0708. Let us be the change we would like

    to see in the world!

Greater love has no one than this: that one lay down ones life for ones friends. (John 15:13)

Pedal 4 Protein Sunday, September 20th

"Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them..." John 6:11 Here's hoping that many of our Grace Good Shepherd family can join together to host and feed the 17-25 riders for this years ride - one night only their first stop of their 6 day ride from Crescent City to Marin County. The riders will again raise funds for the grassroots food pantries of Redwoods Presbytery region, including our own. (last years first ever ride raised $25,480!!!) We will be providing: --Dinner @ GGS (3-5 PM) --Overnight accommodations (they will have sleeping bags) --Showers (shuttling to 2-3 riders to members homes) --A continental breakfast @ GGS If you are willing to help provide any of the above- just let Chris Callahan at 825-1751 know. It will be fun- they loved coming to GGS last year for lunch, and look forward to seeing us, our beautiful garden, and pantry again! Thanks very much! Chris Callahan
