A4) The Philippine Normal University – Center for Teaching and
Learning (CTL) initiated last school year a program integrated with
High School Social Studies Subject and UNESCO Club entitled
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for Education for Sustainable
Development (ESD) at CTL. The program started with Social Studies
lesson on Geography from Grade 7 to Grade 10. The various disasters
that affected Philippines were researched by students as an output
after their lesson. Their researches were then shared during the
“buzz sessions.” The initial classroom activity inspired the
students to initiate a school wide project for Disaster Risk
Reduction. Invitation for Japan Solidarity Project has provided
this initiative focus and direction. Students’ information drive
was handled by fourth year students while the third year students
enhanced the whole DRR program. Moved by videos, map and pictures
from different disasters the students’ next plan was training. We
coordinated our educational field trip with Philippine National Red
Cross (PNRC). Speakers from the PNRC shared their knowledge and
experiences regarding Disaster Preparedness. The sharing has
enlightened everyone about the possibilities and catastrophe that
may occur due to natural and man-made calamities. This activity
aimed to increase the access of our students to local knowledge,
stories or non-formal education related to disaster risk reduction,
and to add awareness to the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. This
activity also allowed our students to experience team building
activities through strategies on how to survive in the event of
unexpected disasters like typhoons and earthquakes. Techniques on
wall climbing, rappelling and balancing were likewise demonstrated
by the PNRC resource persons. This program helped the participants
to be calm and prepared at all times. There were also swimming
lessons for water survival. After the educational field trip UNESCO
members met and submitted the DRR inventory to the school. The
students requested materials for disaster preparedness like fire
extinguishers and fire hoses. The administration acted immediately
and six new fire extinguishers were purchased and installed in
strategic locations at the CTL building. UNESCO members again met
for scenario setting in case of fire or earthquake. After the
meeting members came up with evacuation plan and later informed the
students of the color coded signage (per floor) emergency exit.
This will serve as a guide to 496 CTL students in case of fire and
earthquake. 3. Background information or reasons why the school
initiated this activity/programme

• The first lesson from first to fourth year high school in the
PSSLC (Philippine Secondary
Schools Learning Competencies) focuses on geography. After each
lesson are students’ application/ output. Our usual activity is WOW
(Windows of the World), where students put up living dioramas of
different countries based on agreed theme. Tropical storm Ondoy
urge the students to take their dioramas one step further; with
themes like model country in terms of environmental
sustainability.
• After Ondoy, several natural disasters hit our country.
Prevention Web Global Risk Data Platform provides Filipinos cause
and effect statistics of Disasters. Citizen Disaster Response
Center ranked our country as 3rd in the World Natural Disasters
category. These data and students experiences served as a wakeup
call for them to do something relative to disaster risk
reduction.
• Watching Tsunami videos, before and after map of Japan
attached in Japan Solidarity Project
moved our students even further. The need to act within our
means was agreed by our students. Thus, a program was
conceptualized with an objective to promote awareness and train
students on disaster preparedness.
4. Objectives/goals of the activity/programme
• To promote awareness on Disaster Risk Reduction and
Preparedness among students. • To train CTL students on disaster
preparedness. • To collate instructional plans across levels with
disaster risk reduction integration. • To strengthen partnership on
Disaster Risk Reduction with other stakeholders of education at
CTL. 5. Period of time when this activity/programme was/has been
implemented This program took place from June 23, 2011 until March
9, 2012 with the purchase of Fire Extinguishers. CTL community with
its UNESCO Club is organizing a follow up activity to further
strengthen the school’s risk reduction and disaster preparedness
activities. 6. Activities (Short-term actions and strategies of
implementation of the short-term actions) Geography lesson Students
conduct research about local and international disasters as an
enrichment of geography lessons. The students were grouped with the
task of researching and sharing information about DRR (Disaster
Risk Reduction). Topics revolve around the places in the
Philippines, negative effects of calamites in various areas. The
lessons also tackled what will happen if people will continue to do
the negative things we have discussed during disasters (Manila
flooding) inside the classroom and finally to the whole high school
students at the Multipurpose Hall. This also served as preparation
to our field trip with a theme “Team Building for DRR and
Preparedness.” Field Trip One of the best ideas that we thought of
was learning what to do in an actual disaster and its application.
We made this idea happen during our Field Trip last November 29,
2011 in Falcon Crest in Norzagaray, Bulacan. We were divided into
groups that will accomplish Basic Disaster Preparedness course. We
were taught by registered Red Cross volunteers; they explained the
risks and hazards of a disaster. The first team who accomplished
the 5 courses will be declared as winners and they would form the
Disaster Preparedness Committee of PNU-CTL.

Disaster Preparedness Committee The CTL- Disaster Preparedness
Committee (DPC) made an inventory of its Disaster Preparedness
Equipment and Signage. Monitoring and Evaluation The CTL-DPC hand
over to PNU administration its recommendation base on its inventory
and project proposal. 7. Resources used for implementing the
activity/programme
The activities implemented were integrated in the students
Social Studies class; the resources involve are students and
teachers only. No remuneration was requested by the faculty
involved. The field trip fee of P750.00 (Transportation, speakers
and activity area) was shouldered by students. The field trip was
on a voluntary basis. Materials for the signage are from SGM
(Samahan ng Guro at Magulang- Parents Teachers Association). The
students involved in this project participated on a voluntarily
basis. 8. Monitoring and evaluation mechanism and results
Evaluation of the programme Over-all evaluation of the program by
students involve were administered and have a 4.29 score out of 5.

teaches, students and the community
Because of the Disaster Preparedness Committee (DPC) CTL’s
suggestions and recommendations, 6 new fire extinguishers were
delivered and placed in respective areas at Elementary and High
school building. Purchased was made by Philippine Normal
University.
The students became aware of the color coded per floor emergency
exit. The students and faculty concern to its community were put
into action both at home and in school. Train future Social Studies
teachers to integrate DRR in their lesson. Since our school is the
National Center for Teacher Education. 11. Plan for sustainability
and plan for the future Plan for sustainability: The DRR efforts of
the school continue because the Social Studies teacher/ professor
integrate Disaster Risk Reduction and preparedness in their
geography lesson. This school year the third year students research
on different countries DRR efforts. This one page output will be
shared and posted in our UNESCO Bulletin Board as part of
UNESCO-ASP Net Club info drive. The info drive will be conducted by
both high school students and practicing Social Studies Teacher.
The two groups of students will be supervised by their
professor.
Plan for the future: Continuous integration of DRR in various
learning areas. Simple mapping of our building base on the possible
risk of pollution, flood and earthquake in Social Studies class.
PNU-CTL is surrounded by establishments that pose risk to students;
CTL Students compose jingles to promote DRR in their Music and Arts
class; An Investigatory project in Science of first year high
school UNESCO-ASPNet Club members will monitor the dust and air
quality; English reading time focus on reading countries DRR
efforts. Future plans include continuous training to students and
faculty on disaster preparedness. Trainings will be coordinated to
government and non-government organizations. Such trainings
envision equipping our students with physical, social and
psychological capacity to help people around them or within their
reach as need arise.

Additional inventory of the present risk at PNU-CTL is now being
conducted by the UNESCO Club. In the recent storm surge that we
experienced in Manila, we have shown how the effects of such
natural calamities worsen due to irresponsible garbage disposal.
UNESCO Club’s next project is to invite people from junkshops to
give us first hand lessons on what can be bought from our usual
classroom junk. This will be followed by talks on things that we
can do with our kitchen wastes. Disposals of unused personal things
through a garage sale and later on those that will not be bought
will be donated to organizations. This activity will promote waste
segregation in school and later on dream that whatever they
practice in school will also be done in their respective houses.
This will also serve as an income generating project of UNESCO Club
for project sustainability. Finally, this activity aims to make
each CTL student a disaster prepared individual whenever
wherever…ready to be of help at all times! 12. List of attachments

CTL STUDENTS
STUDENTS STATEMENT: Detailed risk assessments have been
completed to offer guidelines relating to the potential hazards and
risks within the the Center for Teaching and Learning. We request
that all risk assessments and control measures be reviewed by the
administrators. We know that it is not possible to eliminate all
potential hazards and their associated risks, to do so would be
both unrealistic and costly. Rather it is preferable that all
involved understand and work to manage the risks so that they are
minimized. Thank you.
