Seal Elementary Celebrates Reading!
A little information about our monthly AR Celebrations. Students have the opportunity to read AR books and then take comprehension tests over the books they read. As they do this, they earn points. At the end of each month we recognize students who have reached different point levels during a morning assembly in the gym. Ask your child about the different prize levels they may earn!
At 150 Points, students get to pose for a READ Poster with books of their choice. Congratulations to these Super Readers!
Kinley Schouten and Cambira McKenzie earned 150 Points in NovemberLauren McCosh and Kethan Barclay earned 150 Points in February
Keep Reading!

PTO started March off by hosting Muffins with Mom. This is a fun morning for moms and students to be served by our USD 396 Dads! Thank you to all the Dads who organized and served us that morning! On March 8th, we sponsored a Skating Night fundraiser at the Rink in Winfield. We had almost 100 skaters including Mrs. McCune, Mrs. Seal, and Mrs. Dunham. On March 15th, PTO refueled the students after Jump Rope for Heart with bottles of water and fruit snacks. Also on March 15th, the winners of the 4th and 5th grade Science Fair received prizes from PTO.
Did you know that a portion of your Spring Portrait purchase from Lifetouch also returns to PTO? Supplementing our large fundraiser in the fall with these smaller fundraisers in the spring, we are able to continue serving the students and teachers throughout the entire school year.

ELEMENTARY NEWS5th Grade Science
This year has provided many STEM science activities for 5th graders. Among these projects has been building and launching model rockets. Designing, building and modifying roller coasters followed. On both of these projects, math, science and engineering skills were used. Students have produced polymers and atom models. They have investigated the prey of barn owls by dissecting owl pellets to locate undigested material such as bones. We have learned about microscopes and used them to view specimen.
On March 7, 2018, 5th graders were given the opportunity to participate in a STEM activity sponsored by Zernco, Inc. Students were given a bag of LEGOS and asked to build something construction related. Some students built equipment; others designed buildings. They used their imagination to produce everything from a hospital, to a crane, to a porta-potty. Each student was interviewed by the Zernco representatives as to the reasoning behind their project. We would like to thank Ashley Thill for bringing this hands-on activity to Seal Elementary for the second year in a row.
Currently, students are studying cells. They will soon produce a plant cell model made mostly from food items. One of our end of year activities will be to learn about the eye and then dissect a cow eye which in the past has been donated by Creekstone Packing Plant of Arkansas City.
What a great group of curious young scientists, engineers, and problem solvers we have had this year! I see a very bright future for our science program!
Pennies for Patients 2018
This was an extraordinary year for the middle school Pennies for Patients 2018 campaign. A goal of $800.00 was not only met, but exceeded with our students and staff raising over $1,000.00 during the month of February. Students were given individual money boxes that they used to collect money thoughout the week. The following Monday, those individual money boxes were dumped into the homeroom classroom collection boxes. Mr. Kroeker’s homeroom class raised the most money and will receive an Olive Garden Pasta Party next month. Some of the fundraising activities for the month included Cupid Grams, Hoops for Hope Free Throw Contest, Pajama Day and a Photo Booth. Thank you for supporting this cause!

Madison Mabie Named to Kansas All-State Academic TeamFour Butler Community College students were named to the 2018 Kansas All-State Academic Team. The students were among 57 Kansas community college students honored on February 15 in Topeka as part of the 23rd Annual Kansas All-State Academic Team Luncheon. The event was attended by community college, university and Kansas Board of Regents representatives, as well as Kansas legislators. The event, co-sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees, annually recognizes top students from the state’s community colleges.

Kindness Rocks DHS Student Council Spreads
Kindness Throughout the District
“A little kindness can go a long ways.” A kindness rock is simply a small painted rock with words of encouragement. Thanks to the donation of over 800 rocks by the SW Butler Quarry, each student in the district was able to create a personal kindness rock to be displayed at each school.
Student Council members prepared all the rocks by spray-painting them in Bulldog colors. After distributing the rocks to the buildings, time was given for decorating. The high school and middle school rocks are on display in the courtyard area between the two buildings and the elementary display can be seen in a case in the hallway.

Summer Conditioning
Summer Conditioning: June 4th to July 19th
High School Athletes will attend July 23rd and 24th
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
7:30-9:30
Groups will be mixed
We will lift and run during this time period
Cost: $20 per athlete Shirt Included
Brochures will be sent to the Elementary, Middle, and High School offices the first week in May. Weightlifting/Speed Camp is open to anyone going into 5th grade
next year through 12th grade.
Why should your athlete participate in summer conditioning?
Younger athletes get valuable instruction time of the various techniques used in the weight room in a small group setting. There is a direct correlation between involvement in summer conditioning and success in your respective sport. High school athletes will continue to build on their hard work from the school year. If
an athlete takes all summer off from training next school year will be like starting over. Strength, speed, and conditioning translate to every sport. Improving in
these areas will ensure your athlete a chance at success. Don’t lose your starting spot to someone who out-worked you this summer!
If you have any questions please feel free to call or email.
