Water security presents a major global challenge for the future owing to a rapidly growing and unsustainable demand for water, increasingly urbanized populations, the effects of climate change and rapid shifts in land use.
From both EU and ASEAN, there have been a significant number of publications related to water-related issues in different focus areas. Policies and management studies have been taking the most of the research, while impact studies of climate change, and interrelationship between water and energy are emerging research focus. Flooding being a serious problem in some ASEAN countries has become a prime research interest together with waste-water, agriculture, and water quality issues.
The key challenges for the ASEAN region includes collecting and maintaining high quality data, mitigating the impacts of water related hazards, sustaining and improving water quality, improving governance systems and acquiring financing for the development of new water infrastructure.
