1 IntroductionSDVO is a digital video interface developed by Intel.

The Intel SDVO port is the second generation of digital video output from compliant Intel Graphics Memory Controller Hubs (GMCH). The electrical interface is based on the PCI Express interface, though the protocol and timings are completely unique. Whereas PCI Express runs at a fixed frequency, the frequency of the SDVO interface is dependent upon the active display resolution and timing.

Essentially, an SDVO port will transmit display data in a high-speed, serial format across differential AC coupled signals. An SDVO port consists of a sideband differential clock pair and a number of differential data pairs.

The SDVO port provides a two-wire point-to-point communication path between the SDVO device and the Intel GMCH. The SDVO control clock and data provide similar functionality to I2C. However unlike I2C, this interface is intended to be point-to-point and will require the SDVO device to act as a switch and direct traffic from the SDVO control bus to the appropriate receiver. Additionally, this control bus will be able to run at faster speeds (up to 1MHz) than a traditional I2C interface would.

The SDVO device accepts this serialized format and then translates the data into the appropriate display format. SDVO devices are third party codecs that utilize the SDVO port as an input and may have a variety of output formats, including DVI, LVDS, HDMI, TV-Out.

When using a dual-channel external transmitter, it will be possible to pair the two SDVO ports in dual-channel mode to support a single digital display with higher resolution and refresh rates.

2 Software Support2.1 Supported SDVO Device Types

The following device types are supported on the SDVO ports.

2.2 Firmware ControlledThe BIOS setup allows the user to select which SDVO device type should be supported. The default selection is DVI device support.

The setup nodes shown below are located in the Graphics Configuration submenu within the congatec BIOS Setup Program on modules that offer the SDVO feature.

2.3 Fix Software SDVO Port ConfigurationThe following port and device configuration is considered to be fixed:

Use device I2C bus address 72h for SDVO port C and 70h for SDVO port B.

Use the SDVO I2C GPIO pins:

• pins 38 and 39 of SDVO connector on XTX,

• pins D73 and C73 on COM Express

• pins 150 and 152 on Qseven

for the device I2C and the displays DDC bus.

2.4 Software LimitationsIt's important to understand that recent Intel graphics controller software (VBIOS and graphics driver) no longer offer full SDVO support. You must read the congatec module's user's guide that you plan to use to learn about the limitations in terms of SDVO device support. New Intel graphics controller software tends to support only SDVO LVDS and not DVI, CRT and TV.

3 SDVO Interface Description3.1 XTX

The XTX specification does not offer support for SDVO on the four XTX connectors X1-X4. For that reason, most congatec XTX modules supporting SDVO have a separate flat foil connector on the bottom side of the PCB.

3.2 COM ExpressUnlike XTX, the COM Express specification has defined SDVO within its pinout. The SDVO signals are multiplexed with the PCI Express Graphics signals. The frequently used type 2 pinout offers support for two SDVO ports, referred to as port B and C.
