    Historyand Division II

    and Division II South Dakota State basketball dates back over 100 years ago.

    Before Division II SDSU has had 7 mens players drafted to the NBA or ABA. Thetwo most successful were Tom Black in 1971 and Steve Lingenfelter in 1983-84.

    The Division II era creates a majority of Jackrabbit history. Since the 1940s formens ball and 1980s for womens ball.

    Two most successful Division II coaches at SDSU have been Scott Nagy and NancyNeiber.

    Aaron Johnston coached the womens team at the DII level from 2000-2004 beforethey made the transition to DI.

    Johnston was a North Central Regional Champion 3 years in a row.

    NCC Co-Champ two years in a row.

    Frost Arena

    Named after former SDSU coach and athletic director R.B. Jack Frost.

    First game was played on February 2nd, 1973. Seats 6,500 people.

    Highest attendance game was on February 11, 1989 with 9,456 fans.

    Until the DI transition the mens team had maintained an over 70% win rate atFrost.

    Frost Arena has and will continue to be one of the toughest place foropponents to play at, especially in the Midwest.

    Division I Transition

    In 2003 SDSU began a 5 year transition into the the Division I level.

    Both teams were Division I independents for the first three years as DIcompetitors.

    Men played other DI transition teams like New Jersey Institute ofTechnology, Texas Pan-America and Middle Tennessee State.

    They also contracted games against distinguished DI teams likeButler, Minnesota and Northern Iowa.

    Women played similar DI transition teams like Texas Pan-America andMiddle Tennessee State.

    Also got more frequent upper DI games against opponents likeMinnesota, Wisconsin, and Baylor.

    At the start of the 2007-08 season both Jackrabbit squads joined the DIconference The Summit League.

    Transition Success

    In 2007 the Lady Jackrabbits were invited to participate in the Womens

    National Invitation Tournament.

    Entered the tournament with a 23-5 record.

    Made it to the quarterfinals beating Illinois State and Indiana at Frost Arenaand then losing to Wyoming at Wyoming.

    The SDSU-Wyoming quarterfinal game had 11,225 people in attendance,

    making that game the 7th highest attended WNIT game in history.

    The mens and womens teams both saw success as Division Itransition teams.

    Womens Biggest Success

    The following year the Lady Jacks were invited again to participate in the WNIT.They were no longer a transition team and had finished number 1 in The Summit League conference during the

    regular season. They were not yet eligible for the NCAA tournament. The Jacks played Creighton at home onMarch 20, 2008 and lost 69-76.

    Early Success

    Mens Biggest Success

    Through the transition year the mens team saw little success on the roadand Frost Arena, as well, was becoming tough to win at.

    On November 23, 2007 the men beat University of Northern Iowa at FrostArena, which was at the time their biggest Division I victory.

    The same year the men also gave Minnesota tight competition almostbeating them at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. The Gophers won by 6points with a 72-78 victory. This was Coach Tubby Smiths first game withthe Gophers.

    Joining The Summit League

    In 2007 both teams started their first season in The Summit League.

    Other schools in the conference include IUPUI, IPFW, Centenary, Oral RobertsUniversity, Western Illinois, Southern Utah, UMKC, Oakland University andNDSU.

    The women finished number 1 in the conference that year but were still ineligiblefor NCAA tournament. They played in the WNIT.

    Coach Aaron Johnston was named 2007 Coach of the Year. That year he led histeam to a 12 game win streak, a record of 16-2 in the conference and 23-7overall.

    Summit League Success

    SDSU became a nationally ranked team in the 08-09 season.

    The women started at number 22 and moved up to number 15 in USAToday/ESPN Coachs Poll and were 16 in the Associate Press poll. They endedthe season ranked 19 in the nation.

    Coach Johnston was named a top four finalist for the Naismith Womens CollegeCoach of the Year.

    This is the most prestigious award a womens college basketball coach canreceive.

    Senior Jackrabbit Jennifer Warkenthien received honorable mention on theAssociated Press All-American team.

    She finished 13 in school history with 1,349 points, 6 for rebounds with 782, 6for blocked shots with 105.

    Warkenthien also has the highest free throw percentage in school history with81.1 percent.
