File-based TMs pain points

Scalability and perfomance: Classic TMs grow efficiently up to 50,000-100,000

TUs. Improved hardware has little effect beyond this Inability to run ‘heavy duty translation logistics‘ with a

fully desktop environment. Server based TMs are faster giving more performance, robustness, and managebility

Processing: TMs get drastically slower as the number of users

increases Batch processing imposes heavy loads on classic

TMs, slowing down response for simultaneous interactive use

Parallelize activities: translation/project management

Page 10: SDL Server 2009 Launch Presentation

File-based TMs pain points

Project Management and Workflows Project management and translation workflows

cannot be fully automated - not an option for "serious" server-side system integration

Clunky user experience for all types of users – less stability and error handling capabilities

Maintenance Difficult to have true vision of translation assest

within the business , especially for large TMs - # duplicate TMs, new TMs, deleted TMs

High total costs of ownership – IT time and costs Insufficient security and lack of centralized user

management

A deployment of SDL TM Server 2009 is designed to focus on solving these limitations

Page 11: SDL Server 2009 Launch Presentation

SDL TM Server 2009: Product statement

SDL TM Server® 2009 is the scalable foundation for your translation environment:

- Provides a performance driven, flexible and innovative solution

- Ability to share and manage translation assets for all parties, internal or external

- Maximizes your ability to centralize and leverage translation assets to minimize ownership costs and management efforts

SDL TM Server 2009: What’s new

Based on SDL "CEAF": Common Enterprise Application Framework

All administration tasks are done via a browser user interface• Installation of special "snap-in" no longer required

Common user management, shared with MultiTerm Server 2009

Page 15: SDL Server 2009 Launch Presentation

SDL TM Server 2009: What’s new

More hierarchical approach to accessing server-based TMs

Possible to use Explorer-like folder structure based on the concept of "organizations"• Example: server-based TMs per department

(inhouse use) or customer (LSP use)

Studio allows browsing to TMs based on user rights

Page 16: SDL Server 2009 Launch Presentation

SDL TM Server 2009: What’s new

Concept of centralized field templates and language resources

Manage field settings and language resources centrally Apply new fields and resources to all TMs based on field template in one

go Examples

• Add a new customer in attribute field "Customer" and apply to all TMs• Add a new abbreviation to English (US) and apply to all TMs with English (US)

as source

Page 17: SDL Server 2009 Launch Presentation

SDL TM Server 2009: What’s new

Enhanced integration with SDL Trados Studio Access server- and file based TMs in parallel Create server-based project TMs as part of project creation Fine tune performance settings (based on user rights)

SDL MultiTerm Server 2009: Overview

Page 20: SDL Server 2009 Launch Presentation

File-based Terminology pain points

No guarantee of using the most up-to-date terminology

Localization and branding issues Cost implications

Difficulty in sharing file-based termbases Unproductive and costly to share termbases via email,

FTP, memory stick etc. High total cost of ownership

Page 21: SDL Server 2009 Launch Presentation

File-based Terminology pain points

Defining roles in managing terminology Dedicated people to manage the terms Terminology ‘viewers’

Scalability issues – accommodating growing termbases

More users of a termbase = more valuable to the business

LSPs – more translation projects require more termbases

Enterprise – as the business grows (new products, process, acquisitions), terminology also grows

Large termbases place burden on IT and system performance

Page 22: SDL Server 2009 Launch Presentation
