Karen Franklin, Manager of Library Services

One result of our recent “Libraries Inspire” video campaign -- celebrating Canadian Library Month in October – is that I feel inspired to comment on your responses. Thank you to everyone who took a moment to step in front of our roving video camera to express what your library means to you! You spoke of the library’s collections and the ease with which you could get requested reading materials to you, you spoke of the presence of public computers and the provision of Internet for those who do not have either, and you spoke of the programs that are offered and how they give you an opportunity to learn something new – something you may never have thought about before.

One of you mentioned that the Library’s presence in your community was a welcome surprise when you first moved to the area. One of you declared that coming to the Library was fun – that particular video was fun to watch too! Who was that blue guy?? Several of you said that going to the library was a long-standing tradition in your families’ lives – while the SD&G County Library has had an active presence for only 43

years(!), libraries have been part of our community landscape in Canada for well over 100 years. In fact, our own Lancaster Branch has been in its location and operating continuously as a public library since 1903.

Indeed, one thread that connected all of your videos was that libraries create community. It isn’t even so much about the building or the location of the library, but the links to community services, to collected information, and to each other that seems to inspire your appreciation for libraries. We hear you, and we definitely agree!

We value you. We continue to find new ways to bring information, a love of reading, life-long learning opportunities, recreation, and community-building services to you. We seek to find you in unlikely settings, like farmers’ markets, fairs, school auditoriums, community centres, seniors’ centres, playgrounds, or even your cell phones and laptops. How libraries inspire is different for each of you, and how libraries are responding to your needs is changing. One thing remains the same, however. You inspire us.

Feeling Inspired! SD&G County Library

In October 2014, the Friends of the Long Sault Library donated $500 to the SD&G County Library. Earmarked specifically for collections, this money will go towards large print book purchases that will benefit the entire SD&G County Library system.

“The Friends of the Long Sault Library are very proud of our library and how our donation will support both our library and the whole system”, said Noella Whorrall, Chair of the Friends. “At this time, there appears to be a need for large print books, and we’re happy to be supporting that area of the Library’s collections”.

In November 2014, the Friends of the Ingleside Library have donated $500 to the SD&G County Library. Earmarked specifically for collections, this money will go towards Children’s and Adult Non-Fiction book purchases for the Ingleside branch of the SD&G County Library.

“This donation was made possible by the generosity of our local community”, said Frances Marin, on behalf of the Friends.

Each book purchased with this money will be recognized with an inscribed bronze bookplate. The Library is very pleased to be able to appropriately recognize this contribution to our collections, and is very grateful to our Friends for their generous gifts.

All monetary donations to the Library are used to further the mission and purposes of the Library, and may be designated for specific collections, equipment, furniture or Library programs. Donations over $500 are recognized at bronze, silver, and gold levels. If you would like to make a donation to the SD&G County Library, please contact your local branch or call 613-936-8777.

Serena

American Sniper

The year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains—but she soon shows herself to be the equal of any man. Together this lord and lady of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she will never bear a child, she sets out to murder the son George fathered without her.

Fun Facts:

Serena stars Jennifer Lawrence as Serena, and Bradley Cooper as George. They last teamed up in Silver Linings Playbook

The film was shot in the Czech Republic

The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on October 13, 2014,in the UK on October 24, 2014, and will be released broadly in North America in February/March of 2015

Chris Kyle was born in Texas in 1974. He

joined the SEALs in 1999 and served four

combat deployments before retiring in

2009. With over 150 confirmed kills, he

earned a reputation as one of America's

deadliest military snipers - and the

nickname 'the Devil of Ramadi'. He

received two Silver Stars and five Bronze

Stars for Valor.

This well-crafted narrative tells his personal

story of his time in the military. This book

doesn't glorify his work, but is honest and

unapologetic, focusing on his life and what

it is like to be a sniper.

Fun Facts:

With a sub-title of "the autobiography of the most lethal sniper in U.S.

Great Reads! The Forgotten Highlander Alistair Urquhart Book Review by Barbara Lehtiniemi

A wrenching first-person account of surviving the POW camps in Singapore, Burma and Japan during the Second World War. An incredible testament to the indomitability of the human spirit, and man's capacity to survive the absolute worst.

Alistair Urquhart was a 22-year-old member of Scotland's Gordon Highlanders. Stationed in Singapore in 1941, he, along with tens of thousands of other POWs, was captured by the Japanese. Imprisoned under the most cruel conditions, he spent most of the war constructing the so-called Death Railway in Burma. He would spend 750 days in this hell. Living on less than a cup of rice a day and subjected to bouts of malaria, Urquhart's health became precarious. Ironically, cholera may have saved his life. Contracting that dangerous and highly contagious disease meant he was transferred out of the death camps. Fate was not finished with young Urquhart, however, as incredibly things just get worse, then even worse still. Remembrance Day should last all year. Urquhart was almost 90 years old before he could bring himself to write about his horrific experience during the war. He surely wept while doing so. You will weep while reading his book.

The Rosie Project Graeme Simsion In the Rosie Project, Don Tillman, a professor of genetics designs a sixteen-page, scientifically researched questionnaire to find the perfect partner. Then he meets Rosie, fiery, intelligent, and meeting none of his requirements, who asks him for help to find her biological father.

Read this for a delightful romantic comedy.

The Fairy Godmother Mercedes Lackey Lackey sets her new series in a world where “The Tradition” tries its magical-and surreptitious-best to force the characters into their "legendary" roles. But things sometimes go awry, and when Elena is denied her predestined Cinderella role because her kingdom's prince is too young, she is chosen as an apprentice by the local Fairy Godmother and ends up creating a legend of her own.

Read this novel for magical world-building and a new twist on the Cinderella tale.

Dispatches Chix With Stix By Glenda Eden

The new millennium brought a renewed interest in an old craft, and thanks to YouTube and knitting sites like Knitty and Ravelry, what was once learned at your grandmother’s knee became available on the computer screen.

But missing from this wealth of digital information was the comradery of learning skills passed down through the generations. So, out of this upsurge in the fibre arts grew the sit and stitch movement and people began to meet in yarn stores, cafes and libraries around the world. Experienced knitters share challenging new techniques and novice knitters gain support and confidence.

For several years now, knitters and crocheters of all ages have met at the Ingleside branch and many have also explored and shared other needle crafts like embroidery and needle felting.

The Ingleside group is very social and wonderfully supportive. They meet every Monday evening from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. except on long holiday weekends when the library is closed. Beginners of all ages, and intermediate knitters intimidated by more advanced techniques like cables or double-pointed needles, are welcome to drop by any time with worsted weight yarn and 4mm needles. The library has a good selection of knitting books on the shelves and computers are available to access online resources. Come join us—the coffee is always on!

COMMUNITY CORNER / ÉSPACE COMMUNAUTAIRE CONTACT NORTH IN YOUR COMMUNITY!

By Carilyne Hébert, Online Learning Recruitment Officer

Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry residents can now access post-secondary education, literacy, high school credits and training opportunities from across the province in their local library.

Our Online Learning Recruitment Office, Carilyne Hebert, is happy to meet with you in any of the local county libraries to discuss your education needs.

If tuition fees are a barrier, there are a number of courses available that are free. For example; Learning to Communicate Using Internet and Email, Bookkeeping Essential Skills, Computer Use Essential Skills, Creative Writing, Ready for College, Managing your Money and many more. For those wanting to finish a high school diploma there is no deadline for registration.

It can be overwhelming finding the right course and getting registered but we are able to make that an easy process. Residents are welcome to contact Carilyne directly to set up an appointment to discuss their options at 1-855-353-2642 or [email protected].

By Technical Services (David Brush, Kim Cadieux & Erica Sutton)

Starting in January 2015, after having received feedback from our patrons and consulting with our branch staff, we have decided to proceed with a new process for managing Book Club Kits. Complete Book Club Kits will be checked out to designated leaders of book clubs who will be assigned a Book Club membership card purely for checking out these kits.

The book club leader will:

Place a request with their local branch for their selected Book Club Kit.

Pick up the complete Book Club Kit when it arrives using an assigned Book Club membership card, and then distribute the books to the club members.

Record who has which copy by using a provided tracking sheet.

Collect all copies and returning the entire Book Club Kit to the library within the 6-week loan period.

The main benefits of this new process are:

More user-friendly by removing the cumbersome request and club list forms that often required later revisions as club members came and went.

Non-library members can now participate in SD&G book clubs, as only the club leader needs to be a resident (previously a reported issue for book clubs with members both in and out of SD&G).

Significantly faster processing time for the Technical Services Department, so new Kits can be obtained and prepared more quickly.

Significantly less paperwork will allow Kit requests to be filled more quickly.

In December we will also be adding Book Club Kit listings to our online catalogue, so staff and patrons can always get the most accurate title list by searching for “Book Club Kit”. If you have any questions regarding our new book club procedures please feel free to contact your local branch.

The SD&G County Library hosts Book Clubs in Alexandria, Avonmore, Chesterville, Crysler, Ingleside, Long Sault, Maxville, St. Andrews, Williamstown & Winchester! Please check www.sdglibrary.ca and our Program Guide for dates and times. We’ll see you there!
