WHAT ? Ressò is a strategy that uses the collective infrastructure (or collective space) to inspire a social and urban rehabilitation process.

WHO ? The user is essential to be able to accomplish the rehabilitation process. The user’s disposition and attitude towards collectivization of activities and resources are decisive to achieve this saving.

HOW ? The ressò space, understood as the trigger of this rehabilitation process, has to be a self-sufficient constriction, adaptable to the different urban layouts and be able to accomplish a flexible comfort for its users.

“EFdeN wants to align Romania’scapital city, Bucharest, with othermetropolises. How? By recycling thebrownfield sites within the city, thus offering a solution to urban challenges such as mobility and densification. EFdeN proposes a project whose epicenter is nature.

This is why ourprototype has a hybrid greenhouse.We designed this green space to accommodate both purposes of utility and pleasure, since it enables its user to include urbanfarming in his style of living, while complementing the environment with a leisure space. In addition, it functions as a thermal

buffer and it has a functional role regarding HVAC system. EFdeN’s prototypeis not only an intelligent house, but also engages sustainability, as the materials we use have either an increased endurance or present a high degree of recycling.

The floor plan of the house is mostly open. The guests will enter the house through the front entrance which opens in a large space containing the living room and dining room, next to the kitchen. From the living room you can enter the big greenhouse at the back

of the house.The climate scheme shows how the climate system works on a summer day. The glass skin can open as a garage door, making large openings which naturally ventilate the house through draft. The space between the roof and the glass house

generates a stack effect which naturally sucks out the air. The floor cooling cools down the interior even more.

Embrace is thought to be housing a unit that can be multiplied and integrated in a larger urban scale as part of a new building or added on top of an existing building. The interior is designed as an open flexible space with the option of opening up

to the outside. Through sharing facilities such as washing machines and common kitchen appliances, Embrace optimizes the use of functions and area. The concept is ‘need to have’ instead of ‘nice to have’. The envelope is separated into a thermal envelope and a weather shield.

This provides the thermal conditions for growing fruits and vegetables in an urban garden. The thermal envelope consists of three prefab volume elements that fulfillthe requirements for transportation.

Team Casa FENIX takes on the challenge of designing a sustainable and energy-independent home whichcan be deployed quickly following a disaster to respond to the emergency and which can be adapted to different climates. This is an opportunity to explore

passive design strategies, given that energy and water supplies are often affected during and after a disaster and this also has a severe effect on people’s comfort. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has proposed that after a natural disaster

there are three clearly defined stages: Emergency, Relief and Reconstruction. The conceptual idea for Casa FENIX contemplates three modules to be implemented progressively to finally become a permanent home.

Our design focuses on three key themes: weaving, transformation, and playfulness. Techstyle Haus will have a lightweight structure through the use of a multi-layer, adaptable textile enclosure: the exterior walls will capture solar energy and insulate the house, while textiles will be utilized internally to create an easily reconfigurable space that can adapt to the diverse and ever-changing demands of modern living. Furthermore, Techstyle Haus will

be built to meet the Passivhaus standard, the highest international standard for energy efficiency. The use of textiles as a principal building component has the potential to minimize the environmental impact of material transportation and the assembly process. As an affordable, lightweight, super-insulated solar home, Techstyle Haus will set a standard for the next generation of residential architecture. Techstyle Haus

will encourage its occupants to engage in healthy and sustainable living habits within both the home and its surrounding community through the use of compelling, positive feedback responses and an emphasis on living playfully.Techstyle Haus’ surrounding landscape will act as an interactive playground that encourages visitors to explore and learn from its engineering and architectural systems. Baan Chaan means ‘Terrace House’ in Thai, and represent Thai houses which have terraces as a main component of the house. Baan Chaan can also mean ‘My Home’.

The concept of Baan Chaan is “adaptive house” because it can be adapted

to suit the users. This concept can apply to single housing, collective housing, or urban housing design.Thai tradi tional houses are designedaccording to the context around them there fore they only needs minimum active me chanical systems to operate and live comfortably. The house is also designed to

survive to floods by using traditional wisdom, which is to ‘live sustainability as a community’ The whole community will be able to sur vive floods by helping each other out during these disasters by using common facilities, landscape, and shared space between households.

Cooperatives have a long tradition in Switzerland dating back Centuries when “Alpgenossenschaften” (Cooperatives) were formed in Switzerland to preserve the way of life here. Since then, the idea of working together has been deeply rooted in Swiss society. We utilize this cultural tradition with our your+ concept and interpret

the idea of cooperatives in a new way: a shared living network-your+. Our three room pavilion showcases part of the living area that will be available to the residents of your+. From the entire conceptual structure we extract three rooms as an example of options and layout. We choose to have a block style building because of the space saving attributes

and the urban setting and density of Switzerland. While this concept does not lend itself to the small footprint we must conform to, we are confident we can portray the living area of the lifestyle benefits through the structure we will bring to Versailles.

The CASA system is an affordable lightweight building technology comprised of a series of products that deliver a personalized energy efficient house that is environmentally responsible and faster to build.

Aimed for underdeveloped residual spaces inside the city, CASA is a feasible option for immediate densification that diminishes the cost of land and reduces the distance between people and their activities, regenerating

a degraded ecosystem at a local scale while building resilience in the face of imminent climate change and economic crisis.

The main idea is the intraurban densification by the help of a build-up on top of an already existingbuilding. Thereby additional living space is created, where densification on ground level is not possible due to densely built-up areas. At the same time the build-up is able to produce an energy surplus by building integrated solar energy technique, because it is elevated

and ideally unshaded. This surplus is transferred to the existing building stock, on which it is built. Thus the old building carries the new building and provides energy for itself and partly for the old building. A symbiosis comes into existence. We refer to the smaller partner of this symbiosis – our prototype for the SDEurope 2014 – as a symbiont.

Here synergies with regard to economy (new living space), ecology (energy change) and society (demographic change) are used. A new entity is formed by the new build-up and the existing building. The symbiogenesis – as we call this new entity – is an innovative and intelligent node which blends in with the energy,mobility and social networks of the city.

The LiveLib is a residential building composed by two elements: the «hub» and the «capsules».The «hub» is essentially a multifunctional tower containing systems such as energy production, ventilation, electric equipment, waste and rainwater management, as well as vertical access. It gathers all the technological

infrastructure needed for the sustainable growth of a home into a single hub where the expenses are managed by the city. Each hub will have several ports able to receive a «capsule» of habitation, property of the citizen, that is plugged into it. The capsule’s plug serves as the center of all the energetic and physical

exchange, that will shift the owners’ expenses depending on their consumptions. The idea is to make a dense area of individual homes in which people have access to their needs,but are also aware of their responsibilities and their role in sustainable development.

Based on the concept of “sustainable re-densification” we proposethe colonization of available spaces on existing buildings’ roof decks. This concept could also apply to lower floors or leftover spaces located in between existing walls. This concept

generates a new urban complexity based on a symbiotic relationship between new and old whose association benefit all implicated parts. This increase of density and its exploitation will allow financing energy upgrades and accessibility facilities of the occupied building.

This urban regeneration challenge addresses social, technical and economical issues. It opens opportunities for energy efficiency improvement not only for new constructions but also for existing housing buildings.

Inspired by natural ecosystems which foster a symbiotic equilibrium between individual parts through interaction and exchange, Maison Reciprocity is a reimagined row house that seeks balance between aesthetics and performance, design and construction, spaces and systems via the integration of common sense

design strategies, technologically innovative building systems, and energy efficient construction techniques. Maison Reciprocity is composed of three interdependent systems to create an energy-plus row house prototype: the Urban Shell, an energy efficient structural envelope; the CHORD, an integrated building systems core;

and the Living Brise-Soleil, building skin components that produce energy and provide shelter. Maison Reciprocity cultivates effective urban density through mixed-use planning, open design principles, and clear program relationships.

RhOME is a house for everyone, designed to be a social housing modelfor roman urban contest with high energy efficiency performances, but at the same time sober. It is an affordable dwelling that responds to optimal comfort conditions. The team is working

on two different urban areas disconnected from Rome. The first one is in the suburbs, afflicted by buildings that are the product of unauthorized construction. The other is next to the dismissed railway routes, representing urban voids.The tissue is reconnected by five stories

wooden buildings in a urban compound where the social spaces are the main interaction. High passive behaviour features, natural materials, renewability, reutilization and recycling are the main guidelines of the project.

As a team from Berlin, we have taken on the task of densifying the existing city centers with energy efficient dwelling units that dock onto existing structures, creating a better energy budget for the entire city. Two main elements of the house are the folding facade

and the core module. The fold-up facade enables the house to optimally adapt to the different weather conditions - in summer opening up like a flower towards the sun and providind shadow and in winter - the down folded solar facade can provide a higher level

of insulation. The core module in the the center of the living space contains the technical equipment and provides storage room as well as a comfortable bathroom and kitchen with an incredible sky view.

The urban culture fabricated by a series of dedicated open spaceslink up where the functions intersperse, thusrefraining from creating rigid zones.These spaces function as culturalhubs. With highly dense population,commercial strips run across the city,

urban life is planned with convenienceto transportation and the factor of accessibility. The neighborhood is designed as a mixed-use sector with commercial activities on ground-le-vel and residential dwellings above. Based on the passive solar principles

and Vastu Shastra, the 700 sq ft houseaccommodates 6 people. The design has been optimized with respect to heating, ventilation and lighting strategy.

Tropika is the solar house for the tropics, where solar energy is a diamond on the rough. Approximately forty percent of the world’s population lives in the tropics, representing a great opportunity for innovation. The house was designed to maximize

efficiency and versatility so it can be constructed from a single story house to a four story building. Costa Rica, like many other tropical regions, enjoys a relatively mild climate wit-hout major extremes of heat or cold, making it more suitable for ‘green’

buildings than other regions. We want to emphasize in reducing energy consumption by taking advantage of cross-ventilation and use of natural light. We picked a site in the urban areaof the capital to project the construction.

Orchid is a type of epiphytic plant that usually grows on another plant :this can be compared to the situation of the rooftops in Taiwan. Orchid’s living environment requires great natural ventilation, sufficient indirect

lighting and good drainage system. We would like to utilize this fundamental characterictic as a metaphor for the design of Orchid House, the innovative rooftop addition to the existing buildings. The Orchid

House aims for easy assembly, high energy efficiency, and high quality space and also carries a mission which is to revitalize the old buildings in downtown Taipei.
