Why is Career Development Important?

Introduction

• One of the 3 MOE goals for K-12 Education • Grad Transitions

• a 30hour work experience is a core component of graduation

• Career Development is way more than trades!… Career Development programming provides the connection between the K-12 system and post- secondary education and/or the workforce• Provides students with relevant education and

programming – improves achievement levels and grad rates

• Provides post secondary and workforce transition pathways and opportunities while still in high school

Cross Enrolment• Any students who begin any career related programming after the

Sept 1701 funding cutoff are cross enrolled by Westshore through CE or DL so that ministry course funding is collected.

‘Dual credit’• In many dual credit career courses and programs, students

receive high school graduation credits and post secondary credits. The district receives funding for both the post secondary and ministry/BAA courses– 2 for 1 funding.

‘X’ Block• Many career courses and programs (eg: Work Experience and

SSA) run outside the normal timetable and are generally on top of a student’s full course load which means these students are ministry funded more than 1.0 Career
