FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPT. 27, 2017 SD Symphony Orchestra season opens with US premiere of 2 contemporary works SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2017-18 season on Saturday, Oct. 7, with the U.S. premiere of two contemporary works for piano and orchestra paired with a couple of masterpieces by legendary German composer Richard Strauss. The SDSO, led by Maestro Delta David Gier, will open the show at Sioux Falls’ Washington Pavilion with Strauss’ Don Juan, Op. 20, a tone poem based on the legendary character originating in Renaissance-era Spain. The orchestra, featuring piano soloist Emanuele Arciuli, will then perform Luminary Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Thai-American composer Narong Prangcharoen for the first time on U.S. soil. Prangcharoen, who will be in Sioux Falls for the performance, composed Luminary to honor the 72nd birthday of pianist and teacher Bennett Lerner. It was commissioned by the Ansin Foundation with support of the SDSO and the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, which first performed the work last June at Thailand’s Prince Mahidol Hall. Gier met Prangcharoen through his ongoing work with the Thailand Philharmonic, and Prangcharoen approached Gier about having SDSO premiere his work in the U.S. Gier felt that Arciuli, winner of Italy’s coveted Abbiati Prize, would be the perfect soloist for the composition. “I really wanted to put these two together,” Gier said. The orchestra, again joined by Arciuli on piano, will then perform the U.S. premiere of the jazz-inflected Ballad Nocturne by American composer Ann Millikan. The 2009 composition, which was commissioned by Orchestra Filarmonica di Torino specifically for Arciuli, was borne out of Millikan’s idea to write Arciuli a composition that has both the expressive feel of a jazz ballad and the flowing, lyrical style of a nocturne for orchestra. The orchestra will close with Strauss’ Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, Op. 59, the three-act passionate comic opera that debuted in 1911.
