Around Scotland, from the Highlands to the Borders, hundreds of community-based groups are working to protect and enhance Scotland’s built environment. Civic trusts, conservation societies and local groups, made up largely of volunteers, are making a real difference to the protection of our historic buildings, places and spaces and actively slowing the spread of inappropriate profit-driven development.

The Scottish Civic Trust was established in 1967 as a response to the widespread destruction of historic buildings and areas of townscape that had evolved over the centuries, and to the loss of the communities that valued these places. Over 40 years on civic society is alive and well, but in need of fresh impetus and a new di-rection. The Scottish Civic Trust is here to meet that need as the national body championing the civic movement.

Our inaugural annual conference – Scotland’s Civic Movement: Making a Difference – brings together professionals, local groups and individuals to think about the future for active community engagement in the planning and placemaking agenda in 21st century Scotland.
