On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them.

When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to

speak because they knew him.

Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

Nearly everyone is affected by divorce; whether it’s you, or a

family member, or a co-worker. Divorce happens…..and it

hurts.

The CATHOLIC’S DIVORCE SURVIVAL GUIDE is a

12-week DVD/discussion program beginning

Sunday, February 22nd at 1-3 p.m. in the Gathering Room.

The program covers the topics of shock, denial, anger, grief,

guilt, forgiveness, money, the courts, the kids, the ex-spouse,

annulment, dating, sexuality, spirituality, remarriage or staying

single, and much more.

The program is based on the teachings of the Catholic Church

and open to anyone who needs comfort, counsel and clarity after

a divorce. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $25 on or before

February 9, 2015. After February 9, the cost is $30. NO

BABYSITTING is available. Commitment is needed for this 12-

week program. All classes build upon each other. No make-ups

are available.

Dates of program classes are:

April 12, 19, 26

CHWC is a one week opportunity to share the love of Christ and serve the neglected,

brokenhearted and the marginalized in any way needed. Equally, to inspire participants to live

as disciples of Christ through serving others as a way of life; and to foster the Catholic Faith of

each participant through the sacraments, prayer and involvement in social service.

Open to students entering the 8th grade through college, CHWC seeks to provide outreach

services to our community. Typical assignments range from working for retired elderly around

their house, working at St Vincent de Paul: Food Bank, Store, or Meal Program, and working

by providing child care.

The cost is $345.00 per camper and covers all food and lodging. You will be given assignments

to assist the elderly or infirm within the community; work at St Vincent, work with children,

and many more opportunities.

Saint Albert’s needs to register campers by March 1st. Scholarships are available for youth who

are registered parishioners and active within the parish.

VOLUNTEER RECEPTIONIST

Saint Albert the Great Parish is looking for a

volunteer to serve as the Parish Receptionist.

Duties are minimal: answer phones (training

provided), distribute mail, assist the Data

Manager, Marie Fromherz as needed.

Monday—Friday : 8:30 am to 1:30 pm.

If you have the time and are willing to serve

throughout the week that would be ideal, but if

you are only available to serve one or more

days during the week that would be perfectly

acceptable and welcome as well.

Saint Anselm wrote in “On the Fall of the Devil”1 that

angels, as well as humans, are primarily driven in whatever they

choose to do by two motivations. In the first instance they are

motivated to act in their own self-interest in pursuit of personal

happiness, or to put it another way, they choose that which best

benefits themselves. In the second instance angels and humans are

motivated to do what is right; that which is the just and moral thing

to do; what God wants them to do.

“God gives us the grace and the power to do what is right,

but any actual choosing to what is evil—that doesn’t come from

God; it comes entirely from us. If we are honest with ourselves, we

will admit that God hasn’t forsaken us; rather, we are the ones who

have forsaken him.”2 In the second story of creation, the first man

and woman chose what they believed was in their own self-interest;

they believed they would be like gods if they ate of the only thing

that God had denied them. They did what they wanted not what God

wanted and as a consequence they lost their innocence and

happiness while gaining knowledge of good and evil and

experiencing pain and suffering.3

We, like our first parents, too often choose what we believe

is in our self-interest, what we believe will make us happy even

when we know or suspect that it is the wrong thing to do. When we

choose to do what we want rather than what God wants we fall short

in meeting God’s expectations and we fall to sin. Inevitably we find

neither happiness nor any lasting benefit from our self-indulgent

choices. We display great hubris before God while proclaiming

moral superiority over our Creator.

Jesus taught us that in order to be given the keys to the

kingdom of heaven we must become poor in spirit but few take the

time to understand what he meant. Even fewer model their lives as

Christ taught and God desires. Known as the beatitudes, the Gospel

of Matthew lists eight blessings pronounced by Jesus that mark the

beginning of what is now known as the Sermon on the Mount.4

While Jesus could often be found among those who were

financially poor, he was not speaking of those who had no

possessions or wealth when he said that the kingdom of heaven was

for the poor in spirit. Those who are poor in spirit are those who are

humble enough to choose to do what God wants rather than what

they want. Those who are truly blessed are those who, without

regard to wealth or social status, choose to do God’s will, to do what

is right, moral, and just.

In his agony Jesus prayed, “not my will but yours be

done”5 fully demonstrating what it means to be poor in spirit, doing

what God wanted rather than what would certainly have been in his

self-interest. Should we dare do anything less?
