Screening Feedback

AGE + GENDERThe majority of the people I surveyed were females, but there were some males to give a balanced view. My target audience are females so it was useful to get a lot of feedback from them.

I was able to look at specific feedback for the males and females, and on the whole females tended to like more parts of the music video – conveying it appeals more to the target audience.

Similar to the gender, the majority of people I surveyed were in my target audience age range: 11-20 years old. This was useful to gauge whether the music video is appropriate for the people I am targeting. The older people I surveyed provided a more balanced view and allowed me to gain a wider opinion.

SHOULD THE BLUE-YELLOW OVERLAY GET STRONGER AS THE VIDEO PROGRESSES?

The results for this question were surprising due to the fact that they were almost 50/50. I asked this question as it is something that came up prior to the screening as something I might be able to incorporate instead of just having the same percentage of each colour hue continuously.

In light of these survey results, and the majority of them answering “yes”, I will experiment with this effect in the edit of my second draft. However, to ensure that it looks appropriate and aesthetically pleasing I shall form a focus group consisting of my target audience to discuss the new effects.

WHAT VIDEO OVERLAY WOULD LOOK BEST ON THE PERFORMANCE SECTIONS?

I asked this question as I felt that the performance parts of the music video were too plain and needed a coloured effect to make them less of a contrast to the narrative parts of the video.

Colour light leak was the most favoured overlay for Sophie’s parts of the music video with 46% and 32%. The only problem with this would be sourcing a non-copyrighted video with this effect on it. However, the black and white effect was favoured by 27% and 9% of people; not much under the colour light leak but still an option.

From here I will attempt to find a copyright free video with a colour light leak on it. If this is successful I will edit the second draft and add it on. However, if it doesn’t look right or I’m unable to find one then I will experiment with black and white to see which looks better.

IS THE NARRATIVE CLEAR?To ensure I was producing a music video which was relevant and clear to follow I asked this question. Only 11% of people at the screening said they weren’t sure about the narrative and everyone else was at the screening and online. I’m pleased that near enough everyone was able to understand as it will allow the narrative to be relatable for the target audience. The two people who didn’t understand the narrative were males – possibly because my music video is aimed more towards females and they weren’t able to relate to the female character and singer. To ensure that some parts of the narrative are marginally more understandable I will film a couple of extra clips to make them

DO YOU THINK THE GARAGE DOOR WORKS IN THE MUSIC VIDEO’S PERFORMANCE PARTS?

Again, I was surprised with the result of this question. Prior to the screening and the online preview, I was given the advice that the garage door needed to be removed as it takes away from the performance parts. However, a higher percentage of people said it works compared to those who thought it should be cropped out! I think I am going to juxtapose what the survey results have told me and re-film or crop the parts of the garage door out. Although this means a lot more work, I don’t feel the performance parts look as good with it.

IS THE BALANCE BETWEEN PERFORMANCE AND NARRATIVE CORRECT?

Once again, I’m pleased with the results of this question. Only a small percentage said “no” which means that most people think the narrative and performance parts work well as a pair. Despite a few of the other changes I will be making I am going to attempt to keep the balance between the two music video types fairly similar to how it is now as that is what the audience want to see.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE?• Sophie and Heather were great!• I like the scenes in the garage.• I think this music video is really effective- the music

and imagery together honestly evoked feelings of sadness! It has been put together really well. I think the balance between narrative and singing is just right. I like the shot from above and particularly liked the grass and arm shot- very realistic/ something I would associate with a music video.

• I like the different use of shots and Sophie playing the black guitar.

• Very emotional story told well.• The performance parts break up the performance

parts well.• shows a story• The story line is clear and well acted.• The powerful narrative, the use of the colour overlay,

the effective use of various camera angles and the good quality acting

• Easy narrative to follow that fits with the lyrics• The plot and all of the garden shots• Photos to real life footage shots is very effective last

scene is powerful and fits with the opening shot= dramatic irony lots of different camera angles used to create interest

• The narrative and song.• Narrative is clear – suits acoustic song.

• The ‘simplicity’ of the story. The pace of the film and link to music.

• Everything!! Good range of shots – allows storyline to be followed clearly and easily. Use of symbols and colours was excellent and enhanced the authenticity of the plot.

• How story-driven it is and the relaxed pace.• I enjoy how well the song works with the video and

the very strong messages put across.• The photo -> real life cuts are really effective and

the angles used are really cool.• It’s soft and beautifully shot.• The mix of both performance and narrative.• I like the outdoor shots and how the same tracking

shot is used to start and finish.• The performance side, her playing the guitar. The

printed photos going into real action.• I really like the _____ and the narrative behind it as

both help each other in conveying the feelings.• Clear narrative while maintaining elements of

performance.• The narrative matches the song really well.• I like the way the singer is incorporated within the

video.• The story it tells. The photos and then the scene.• The story it tells and the brick wall performance

shots.

WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE?

• I don't dislike any aspect. Potentially could add in some more close up shots of the ill actresses' face- teary eyes, her looking blankly into the distance/ to the side of the camera.

• Around 1:52 there is an extended black shot, I would cut the amount of time this is and make it a shorter amount of time.

• An unknown song but if I listen to it a few times the theme and story off the song becomes apparent and I do like it.

• The singing is slightly out of sync with the movements of Sophie's mouth at quite a few points, and is very noticeable, this should be rectified as best as possible.

• Pretty dark storyline but I guess it's relatable to the song.

• nothing!• The indoor shooting of the performance. The

performance, I think, would look better in black and white to contrast with the colour of the narrative.

• I liked it all• The singer could sing the words more clearly• I think it looks like the guitar isn't being played, some

clever editing can make this better though!

•Nothing – I thought it worked out well.•Nothing! Other than the fact it is really sad •The implication of Heather’s illness could have been brought in earlier on to explain her actions.•When she sings it looks a little bit false. The panning upwards was too jolty.•The performance shots can be a little too long.•The shots are slightly out of focus on the outside dark shot.•The garage door!•At some points the noise of the song goes weird.•The girl looks a bit young to be in a short dress – but I get it is supposed to be like this.•One shot is at the bottom of the ladder for too long.•music doesn't quite fit with the clip of the performer not 100% sure what heathers 'barrier' is

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:• Loved it!• “You’re invited” picture – I imagined the shot• Well done! Very good sequencing/transition between shots. • It’s lovely.• Really good so far Kaylie! • I think that you could include more variety in your shots of the

performer. Think different angles/perspectives of the guitar – e.g. from the bridge looking up the neck. A previous video does this well – The next forever – upstream.

• Top job Kaz! You could have maybe faded the brick wall shots into the narrative.

• An emotional song well thought out into a video ...more emphasis on the pills at the end would finalize the ending I feel.

• The fading in from picture to video is a great feature!• Really good choice of song!
