Screen-prints and writings compiled from 2nd Year Art Students research

on African Vernacular Architecture.

“The style of the buildings that are located in these areas are really cool.

The architecture is very abstract shapes. These are some of the shapes

that these buildings reminded my mind of ...arched, round, triangular, square,

rectangular and abstract. These buildings also are made by mud and straw”.

Page 3: Screen Print Artifact

“ Houses, doors, roofs, walls, handmade structures, wood, stalks, blue,

flowers, green, yellow, windows, no glass, rectangular, sun, cone”.

Page 4: Screen Print Artifact

“I think African Vernacular Architecture is basic, muddy, dry, sturdy, woven,

wood, dirty. Dusty, thatch, simple, shack, cool, textured and lacking living facilities”.

Page 5: Screen Print Artifact

“Most of the African Buildings have a lot of beautiful, very detailed markings,

shapes and engravings in the structure of the buildings, that is why I find it

attracting and amazing”.

“ Half of what I know about African Vernacular architecture is nowhere near to what

I know now. I learned about it from this project. I now know that most/all houses are

made out of mud bricks, stone/straw to build their houses as a community instead of

separate people. They work together to help and survive”.

“ I thinks African Vernacular Architecture is…

strong, basic, textured, dry, dusty, cool, thatched, straw, muddy,

triangular, simple, wooden, sturdy and shack. These homes are built

by the community with local plentiful materials”.

Page 8: Screen Print Artifact

“It’s a very small, short and easy house. It has just a little door and is without

any window. It only made by dry grasses, so I think it could be a bit dangerous”.

Page 9: Screen Print Artifact

“I learned a lot about African Vernacular Architecture. I learned that they can build

houses from very little. They can use whatever they have to help put the houses together.

It’s very interesting and simple”.

Page 10: Screen Print Artifact

“Strange, dry, big, odd shape, straw roof, manmade, bright colours, cone,

no windows, West African”.

Page 11: Screen Print Artifact

“The style of the buildings that we have studied are interesting. They are

small and round and the roves are made of straw. I am interested in how they are made.

Dry, arches, straw, abstract”.

Page 12: Screen Print Artifact

“The African have many small house. African don’t have Irish building house”.

Page 13: Screen Print Artifact

“African vernacular is straw, arches, dry, design, curves, lines, colours, bricks,

special designed houses, mud, texture, living”.

Page 14: Screen Print Artifact

“Hot, straw, muddy, dust, small, wood, dusk, dry, cube, structure, morning, basis,

shack, dirt, bright, trees, tall, African, poor, strong, cool”.

“ I found African Vernacular Architecture Interesting because it shows how much we can

actually use our environment. The natives use mud and straw to build the houses, they have

a lot of it. If they had stones they would make out of stone so they use their environment”.

“ Inside, arches, cylinder, big, domes, hot, steady, structure, vernacular, mud, straw, hut,

cold, echo, complicated, Nile, Diamond, semi-circle, native, unusual, outside”.

“The richness is defined from person to person”.

“ I think African Vernacular Architecture is badly built, ordinary, muddy,

stone, hay, poor, uncivilized, dry, small, dirty, thatch, dusty, sturdy, quiet,

handmade, round, triangular, dangerous, simple cool, brown”.

“ Lines, stone, vernacular architecture, normal dwellings, stone, clay, mud,

basic, environment, climate”.

Page 20: Screen Print Artifact

“Simple dome, vernacular, native, mud hut, natural, patterns, hot, structure,

big, unusual, complicated, cylinder, round, wooden”.

“ I find African Vernacular Architecture very interesting, but weird.

The building I chose was made of a lot of stone and it had a lot of arches.

And it seems very hollow. African Vernacular Architecture is study of fundamental problems”.

Page 22: Screen Print Artifact

“Most African buildings are made od mud or wood and are designed into

domes and cones and are woven in some places. Some houses are oval and

with very interesting designs”.

Page 23: Screen Print Artifact

“I think African vernacular Architecture is Triangular and square.

It has straw and mud packed together. The roof is thatched and inside

it is cool and warm. There must be an echo because it is man-made so it

is hollow and has no ventilation”.

Page 24: Screen Print Artifact

“Most African Vernacular architecture is very interesting. The words to describe

it are big, straw, triangular, cubed, muddy, dry land, hot, vernacular, square.

It is very strange but I find it very fascinating. It is also old fashioned and that is why

I find it so interesting”.
