RIVER t-OAR-k
EDITORIAL
Its always nice to report on the good things that happen, so
here we go!
Twenty four club members took part in the Queensland Masters in
May and combined even better for the smoothest and quickest boat
loading in my time at the Club congrats to all who turned out on a
couple of very chilly mornings.
With two trailers to pack and load, expectations were that two
and a half to three hours might have been looked at, but the jobs
were bowled over in an hour and three quarters superb effort!
With Chip running a speedy shuttle across the river and two
crews (one on each side) it all fell into place beautifully well
done everyone.
Special thanks too to the towing expertise of Lofty and Rod.
Truly a gold medal performance!

PRESIDENTS REPORT
Welcome to all those dedicated rowers during the cooler months
on the Sunny Coast. Beautiful mornings whilst its not raining, the
waters are flat and beautiful, watching the sunrise in the
crispness of the morning still. We dont have much news on the shed
front at this time other than I have been speaking with our local
Councillor, Jason OPrey, who is behind in our application for
leniencies we may ask for with the building of our shed. We are
currently obtaining second quotes from alternative builders.
However, we have had an application into council for funding under
the mayoral and councillor discretionary funding program. Our
initial application was unsuccessful, mainly because all the money
had already been allocated. We will be making a subsequent
application in the new financial year which we hope will be
successful as the new funding round comes in and have had positive
feedback towards our application. For those of you who received the
Salt Magazine our club is featured on page 17-18 in the hard copy,
and I wasnt aware that I had a name change to Steve, however, the
article (albeit I am biased) is worth a read. I dont know what
drugs the journo was on when he interviewed me on the Sunday
morning; however, Colleen has also changed her name to Colleen
White!! We would also be very interested in anybody who may wish to
take on the role of organising the social side of the club. I dont
believe that this would be an onerous role, however, it could be
very helpful for the comradery of our members. Please contact me at
the number below. Congratulations to all those rowers who are
completing the Learn-to-Row and transition programs. I hope you
enjoy your future membership with our club. Keep warm during the
winter months and make sure you have those boat lights on during
the shorter days remembering that sometimes the fishermen dont.

TREASURERS REPORT
Since our last newsletter, your committee has applied to the
Sunshine Council for funding from the Councillors Discretionary
Budget which purpose is to assist community groups. Unfortunately,
as Ian has mentioned, our submission to the council was
unsuccessful. However, we will be resubmitting in the new financial
year. The clubs financial position remains basically as per the
last report. The end of financial year has come and gone so the
books will be sent to the auditor this month.

Colleen rules OK?
Well, we all know that (especially the editor!), but you will
all notice (hopefully!) the new sign-in and sign-out book located
adjacent to the main door nothing special about that you say? On
the surface youre right, but it took hours (and hours!) to rule the
blessed thing up for the ENTIRE 12 months. So therefore to not
incur the wrath of the aforementioned, PLEASE sign the book
whenever you take out a boat. She who must be obeyed will be
pleased!
Our esteemed and hard-working Treasurer Tony George is taking an
extended break for a couple of months overseas and we wish him safe
travelling.
Talk around the shed has already been heard discussing the
forthcoming Head-of-the-Yarra. The 57th running of Australias
Rowing Classic will be held on the famous 8.6 kilometre course on
Saturday November 28th, with again up to 200 crews taking part.
Hawthorn club stalwart Bill Goodwin has advised us hes handed over
the reins to Andrew Vogan, who will be the new Chairman of the HOTY
Organising Committee. An early application has been made to again
use Hawthorns eight, the Denis Bourke and this has been pencilled
in. Their only other eight is being loaned to a Japanese crew, so
we should feel privileged!
Absentees recently have included Des Pickering and Barry Black
who deserted us for some stiff dragon boat racing in China, while
Jean Clark has been spending time in the States visiting son,
daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
Richard Hyett is up and around again after his second hip
operation all went well and we hope to see him back on the water in
any capacity shortly.
You may have noticed your esteemed scribe hasnt been seen on the
river for a couple of weeks after surgery but hopefully will also
be up and running asap.

BIG TURNOUT AT QUEENSLAND MASTERSYes, it was hard to believe we
actually had some great weather for a regatta, and in contrast to
previous visits to Coomera, the sun shone while the wind and rain
stayed away youd better believe it!
And, accordingly, the SCRC turned out in force. As mentioned in
the editorial 24 members made the trek to the glitter strip for the
two-day extravaganza resulting in an overall tally of nine gold,
eleven silver and four bronze medals.
Leading the charge were Ian Luxford and Chip McKibben together
taking out the mens E Pair while combining in the Queensland crew
for the Nationals to taste success in the A-B eightsdoubling up
again for victory in the C eights. not bad for a D crew!
Not willing to spend too much time on the bank, Lux flew home
for gold in the D, E and F singlesChip knocked them over in the C
single while settling for silver in the A-B equivalent again, hes
forgotten his age!
Also greeting the judge first were Suzanne Davies and Brent
OKeefe in the E mixed double, while the evergreen pot hunters Rod
Hutchinson and Ted Egerton added to their bulging trophy cabinets
with gold in the H-K double and silver in the pair.
As reported elsewhere, boat loading and unloading went very
smoothly the only blemish on the weekend was the sorry state of the
tents which were in obvious need of replacement. The Committee
agreed accordingly, replacements were purchased, and they had their
first outing at Penrith.
A big thank you too, to our hard-working Captain. Colleen put in
countless hours putting crews together and acquiring boats from
other clubs a job made even more difficult when some members were
forced to withdraw only days prior to the regatta. Well done
Col!
More photos of the regatta are available here. Also, dont forget
to check out the SCRC Facebook page for updates.

AUSTRALIAN MASTERSThey may have been small in number, but our
five representatives at the Australian Masters Regatta at Penrith
did the club proud by returning with nine gold, eight silver and
three bronze medals.
Rowed in excellent conditions, our own iron man Chip took out
the C and D singles, won silver in the B and was even a creditable
fourth in the A division (27-35). Not too bad for a 50 year old!
Not content with that, he picked up bronze in the
Champion-of-Champions single after giving the ultimate winner a
start of one minute 46 seconds! Oh, and he missed the gold by just
nine seconds.
Pairs racing brought two more gold Chip teamed up with Lux to
win the E, while Rod and Ted were not to be denied in the I
division.Always spectacular, the eights saw Lux again greet the
judge first in the F, and impressively combine with Chip in the
Queensland crew to take gold in the Interstate race a similar
result saw the women also taking gold for the Maroons.
The Committee congratulates all for their outstanding efforts
over the four gruelling days of racing.
The podium was again frequented by Sunshine for silver Lux was
just pipped in the F single, won similar in a C 8, as did Rod, Ted
and Jean in a mixed H-K 8.
Silver for Rod and Ted again in the coxed H fours and H 8 that
intrepid duo also collecting bronze in the I double and eight.
Chip McKibben, Ian Luxford, Rod Hutchinson, Ted Egerton and Jean
Clark saw SCRC finish eighth on the medal tally (see table) out of
112 clubs competing at the Olympic course a success rate of over 86
per cent in terms of medals per entry compared with leading club
Canberra with less than 40. Looking at it another way, we were
second only to Toowong of all in Queensland.

URGENT NEED FOR A SHED CAPTAINWhat we DO need ASAP is a new Shed
Captain.Roy Peterson has decided it's time to let someone else have
a crack at the job so he can simply concentrate on his rowing. The
committee would like to thank Roy for his efforts over the last few
years a job thoroughly well done. So, we need a show of hands for a
replacement please contact one of our committee members (or even
Roy!) to find out if you're the man (or woman) for the job!
ROWING ETIQUETTEMembers of the Club are expected to abide by the
following:
Turn up on time if arrangements have been made to form a crew.
This includes in time of inclement weather unless notification has
been made prior to arrival time.
Help take out and put scull trailers away. Help with the power
boat (tinny) if you have been
coached. Put the erg covers back on the machines and ensure
the
windows are closed and the fan turned off if using that
equipment.
On the water: Smaller slower boats give way to larger faster
boats. Be courteous to other river users at all times including
other club members.
If you are taking part in a regatta then please turn up for boat
loading at the shed and boat rigging at the course. Even if your
event is not until several hours into the program, you are expected
to arrive early on the day to help with rigging the boats your boat
will not be rigged for you.
Also, instead of idling the hours away between races (under the
tent or elsewhere) why not assist other crews with boats and oars
to and from the water? It would be helpful and appreciated.
