Belgian Congo: King Leopold II

King Leopold II wanted an African colony to bestow prestige on him & on Belgium and that would make money them. Belgium was not interested in its monarch's dreams of empire-building.

So Leopold, went after Congo for himself.

Then the European rivalry in Central Africa led to tensions, especially in the Congo River Basin.

In 1884, Otto von Bismarck convened the 14-nation Berlin Conference to find a peaceful resolution to the Congo crisis. By 1885, Leopold got most of Congo, with a northern portion going to France.

Under Leopold, the Congo became the site of one of the worst genocides at the turn of the 20th century.
