Results• 51% made insufficient profit in 2002 to cover personal drawings.

• 70% were profitable in last complete financial year.

• 51% expect to be profitable in this financial year.

• Investment to fall in 2003 compared to 2002.

• 2003: expansion in beef, dairy static, contraction in arable and sheep, significant fall in pigs.

• 2003: optimism for future falls: pronounced falls in dairy and arable.

• Strong opposition to ‘decoupling’ and ‘rural development’, opposition to ‘modulation’.

• 55% support Euro entry.

• 40% usually prepare a detailed budget for the next financial year.

• 78% monitor actual cash position from regular bank statements.

• 41% use SAC for business/financial advice (81% an accountant).

• 47% receive inadequate advice/guidance on collaboration with other farm businesses.

• 77% believe insufficient preventative measures in place to prevent FMD, principally meat imports.

• 18% oppose ‘direct action’ in all product areas, 33% neutral, 49% support.

• Strong support for Scottish Conservatives, switching to Lib Dem. and SNP in 2nd vote in Scottish election.

• Absolute right to buy not supported but division in pre-emptive right to buy.

• 50% have no successor in place to carry on the business.

Conclusions• Industry income increased slightly in 2002.

• Optimism for future falls across all types except hill.

• Next 5 years: 15% fewer farm businesses.

• 21% plan to retire within 5 years.

• Expansion forecast only in beef.

• Demand for advice/guidance on working with other farm businesses.

• No belief in FMD control measures.

• Strong opposition to ‘decoupling’ and replacing support payments by rural development programmes.

• Support for ‘direct action’ evident.

• Little support for current largest political party.

• Support for pre-emptive ‘right to buy’.

• High potential for structural change.
