The department of Pathology has been forerunner in terms of its academic achievements. The department is proud to inform that the second half of 2017 witnessed an academic feast in the form of 2 nd national hands-on workshop and various co-curricular and extracurricular activities which we are presenting them in this issue. All our ventures have been possible only because of the constant support and encouragement of our dynamic Principal Dr M G Shivaramu who has played a vital role in all our endeavors. REPORT OF “ 2 nd National Hands-on Cytology Workshop on “Cervical (PAP) and Head & Neck lesions” on 27 th and 28 th Oct 2017.

The workshop was conducted in association with Indian Academy of cytologists, IAC-KC and KCIAPM.

The programme began with registration of delegates followed by breakfast. The delegates came from variousprivate hospitals and medical colleges across the country. We are happy to say that the delegates had come fromdifferent parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.About 89 delegates including consultants, teaching faculty, post-graduates attended and participated in workshop.Formal inauguration was done under the presence of dignitaries – Dr M G Shivaramu Principal, AIMS, Dr Meena APangarkar senior faculty & mentor for the workshop, who is also the head of laboratory medicine, National CamerInstitute Nagpur, Dr Manohar TM , Medical superintendent, Dr Vijay Shankar S, Prof and HOD of Department ofPathology, Dr Nalini Krishnan, Scientific committee coordinator and Dr BG Sagar Observer from Karnataka MedicalCouncil.The workshop began with invoking the blessing of the almighty. It was followed by Welcome Speech by Dr VijayShankar S, Prof and HOD Pathology.

After the inauguration, the workshop on Cervical cytology began with introduction by Dr Dharitri M Bhat. The Resource persons for the scientific sessions are as follows

Winners of Poster PresentationThe first prize was awarded to Dr Tony Pechiatt, post graduate from AIMS, BG Nagara, whilesecond and third prize was given to Asha Patil, PG from SSMC Davangere and Dr Gudrun Kaul,Consultant Pathologist, SRL Diagnostics, Bangalore respectively.

The CME ended successfully by informal vote of thanks followed by collection of participantfeedback forms, post test questions and distribution of certificates.Feedback analysis showed appreciation by delegates of the vast knowledge gained during thelecture sessions which concentrated more on practical aspects as well as during their interactionduring slide viewing sessions. Hospitality and arrangements were very much appreciated. Theyrequested for conduction of many more such workshops.

After the lecture sessions ,there was slide viewing sessions at the practical halls in the department of Pathology. The delegates were overwhelmed with the availability of the slides as well as all the faculty who were present there to clarify their doubts. The workshop began on day 2 with the introduction to workshop on Head & Neck lesions by Dr Suprita M Nayak. After the lecture sessions, there was slide viewing sessions in the practical halls.

The department of Pathology encourages undergraduatestudents to participate in state level annual Pathology Quiz.They will be selected based on the written test and trainingfor quiz will be given to the selected students.The fifth term students Varalakshmi, Santhosh, Manoj andSagar have participated in the State Level UG Quiz organizedby KCIAPM at SDUMC, Kolar on 23.09.2017Ms Varalakshmi, Successfully completed her ICMR projecttitled “Proteinuria among school children aged 8-16 years inrural area of Karnataka under the guidance of Dr VijayShankar S, in the month of October 2017.

Our department has a very active role in the field of medical education.Dr Vijay Shankar S, Dr Amita K & Dr Abhishek M G are active members of Medicaleducation unit of our institution

Dr Nanjundaswamy and Dr Rakshitha successfully completed the revised basic courseworkshop on Medical education technologies , conducted by ST Johns Medical collegeNodal centre in medical education technologies at AIMS from 13th to 15th Dec 2017.

Two of our faculty were the resource persons for the above said workshopDr. Amita K deliverd a talk on “How to write MCQs” and also conducted a “workshop on“teaching- learning methods”. Dr. Vijay Shankar.S delivered a talk on “Group dynamics”& “Avenues and networking in medical education”.

Interdepartmental collaboration |Department of Ophthalmology

Dr Vijay Shankar delivered a talk titled “ Basic Pathology for Ophthalmology”for the postgraduates and faculty of the department of ophthalmology on 21st

December 2017 as a part of interdepartmental educational activities. Thebasic concepts of pathology like specimen handling, grossing, tissue processingwere discussed along with discussion on common tumors in ophthalmology.

CONGRATULATIONS

Results of final year Postgraduates wereannounced in August 2017.Dr.Raghuveer.C.R. , Dr. Swati Sahni & Dr. SachinDixit passed their degrees with flying colors.The Department of Pathology wishes them thebest in their future endeavors.

Dr Vijay Shankar S Chaired a scientific session titled ““Ethics in Pathology practice” deliverd by Dr Sanjay APai at 44th Annual Conference of Karnataka Chapter ofIndian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists,held at SSIMS Davanagere on 31st August 2017.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIESThe department of pathology encourages its faculty and students to participate in extracurricular activities. Thedepartment , from time to time, organizes activities like quiz, and the faculty assist in conduction of in variouscultural activities in the institution.Students actively participate in these events with great enthusiasm andcompete with sportsman spirit. One such event which was organised by students was the cultural festival on theoccasion of Ganesha Festival and Teacher’s day on 20th September 2017. Dr. Vijay Shankar and Dr. Sarvesh BMalong with the faulty members from the department of Pharmacology and Community Medicine participated ina group dance event.
