Patrick Mehlen is the Director of Research

at the CNRS and runs a large group at

the Cancer Research Centre and the

Léon Bérard Cancer Centre in Lyon.

He is also Director of the DEVweCAN

Laboratory of Excellence. He holds

a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology,

and has been a member of EMBO, the

prestigious European Molecular Biology

Organization, since 2006. He is also an

Honorary Professor at the Buck Institute

for Age Research in California.

A few years ago, when dogma held that

the receptors in the cell membrane were

only active when they were linked by their

extracellular ligand, Patrick Mehlen and

Dale Bredesen established the concept

of cell biology based on “dependence

receptors”. If there is no ligand, these

receptors transmit the signal to the cell

to start an apoptosis process, a process

that Patrick Mehlen proposes using to

induce the death of tumour cells.

The effectiveness of this strategy has

been demonstrated in pre-clinical

phases, using the model of highly

aggressive breast cancer, lung cancer

or neuroblastoma. The first clinical trials

on humans should start in 2013.

The 15th Liliane Bettencourt Prize for Life Sciences was

awarded to Patrick Mehlen, the Director of the CNRS

UMR 5238, at the Centre Léon Bérard (Lyon, France).

The Liliane Bettencourt Prize for Life Sciences, worth

€250,000, has been awarded every year since 1997

to a European researcher under the age of 45, who is

recognised within the scientific community for the quality

of their international publications. In addition to their status

as an author and leader in their own scientific field, the

candidate must be leading a particularly promising research

project and have the personal qualities for mobilising an

entire team.

Recognised in 1987 as a public interest foundation, the

Bettencourt Schueller Foundation was set up by Liliane

Bettencourt, in memory of her father Eugène Schueller,

who himself was a researcher and chemist. Its goal is

to push back the boundaries of knowledge in the life

sciences in order to improve health; to unleash talent and

pass on expertise within the field of artistic creativity; and

to relieve suffering, combat exclusion and respond to

social welfare emergencies.

FQEB Research Projects

Under the intellectual leadership of MartinNowak, Professor of Biology and ofMathematics at HarvardUniversity, the FoundationalQuestions in EvolutionaryBiology [FQEB] project aims to fund at least ten research projects to study foundational questions in evolutionary biology. The purpose of the FQEB project isto generate new kinds of knowledge and understanding in core areas in biology where there have been severe “missing knowledge problems.” There are twocore themes of this initiative:

Theme 1: “Evolutionary Origins and Dynamics”

Research questions include:• What is the transition from chemical kinetics to evolutionary dynamics, and can the transition from non-evolving to evolving systems be defined preciselyand formally?

• Are there different kinds of evolution, and is there evolution in the context of evolution itself?• What are the natural laws of evolutionary change, and can we derive a complete mathematical theory of evolutionary laws?• How does population structure affect evolutionary dynamics, and what role might coordination/cooperationplay?• What are the differences between genetic and cultural evolution, and how can these differences be formalized?• What is the role of chance (stochasticity) in evolutionary dynamics?

Theme 2: “Evolvability and the Evolution of Increasing Complexity”

Research questions include:• What are the typical limits of evolvability, and how are these transcended?• Why does evolution (sometimes) lead to increasing complexity?• What are the evolutionary origins of emergence?• How does cooperation affect construction?• Can we build precise models for the evolution of cells, multi-cellular organisms, animal societies and human language?• What is the role of multi-level selection in the larger evolutionary process?

The successful projects will receive funding of up to $200,000 per year for up to two consecutive years. The scholars will do cutting-edge research at their owninstitutions, and will be expected to participate in the creation of new research networks and to work across disciplinary boundaries.Work which has significantphilosophical implications for evolutionary biology and science more broadly will receive priority. Applicants must have an excellent track record of scientificproductivity, as evidenced by publications.

Applications including a brief description of research interests and proposed projects (no more than 3 pages) and a CV should be sent to FQEB GRANTSc/o NPT, 165 TOWNSHIP LINE ROAD, SUITE 150, JENKINTOWN PA 19046 by January 31, 2012. Three letters of reference should also be directlysubmitted to the same address. One letter should come from the principal investigator of the research lab where the applicant plans to work. Priority will begiven to applicants whose host lab can provide supplemental support to the scholar in the form of lab/office space, supplies, computer, travel funds, visa fees, fringe benefits (health/dental insurance). For questions, please contact [email protected].

Applications from female and other underrepresentedminority candidates are strongly encouraged.

The FQEB Prizes are supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.
