Elsevier…HistoryElsevier…HistoryElsevier…HistoryElsevier…History• Elsevier’s name was inspired by the illustrious
House of Elsevier, established in 1580 when Lowys (Louis) Elzevir began selling books to university scholars.
• Authors ranked among the outstanding scholars of the day, including Galileo, Erasmus and Descartes.
• Jacobus George Robbers, a Dutch bookseller and importer of English language books, founded the modern Elsevier Company in 1880.
• In the 1950s and 60s Elsevier took its first steps toward becoming a global company, establishing the Elsevier Publishing Company NV and the Elsevier Publishing Company in New York.
