A few things we’ve looked at...Living vs Non Living Things Cells

Adaptations

Page 3: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

Living vs. Non-Living Things- Definition of living and non-living things- 6 characteristics of living things- Examples of each

Page 4: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

CellsPlants vs. Animal CellsParts of a cellFunctions of organelles

Example: Plant cells have a cell wall, animal cells don’t.

Function: A cell wall protects and supports the cell

Page 5: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

Adaptations- Defining Adaptation- Physical vs. Behavioral Adaptations- Examples of each (Oceans movie, research)

- Example: camouflage, hibernation, migration, symbiosis, stripes, webbed feet

Apply your knowledge (5 points)An orca whale has observed seals playing in

nearby shallow water. Over time the orca has learned when and where the seals will be and has feasted on them because they are easy prey to catch.

Is this a physical or behavioural adaptation? Explain why.

Page 15: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

AnswerBehavioural adaptations are habits and

activities of organisms that are important for survival.

Observing the seals and then attacking them at a certain time is an activity or change in habits.

This change provides the orca with a larger food supply and a better chance of survival.

Case Study(5 Points)On a field trip to Science World a group of

students watch a film about beavers. The class is learning about adaptations so a students asks the teacher if building a dam is a behavioral or physical adaptation.

Pretend you are the teacher, what would your answer be?

(behavioral, physical, or both? Why?)

Page 17: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

Answer:A physical adaptation is a physical

characteristic that makes an organism better suited to the environment they live in. The shape of a beavers teeth allows it to chop down nearby trees that can be used to make the dam, so it is a physical adaptation.

The chopping down and gathering of wood, putting it together, and creating the dam is a behavioral adaptation. It is in activity that increases the beavers chance of survival.

All living things are made of cells. True or False? (1 point)

TRUE!

Cells are the basic units of life. All living things have at least one cell.

Page 19: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

An organism with many cells is called “unicellular” - True or False?FALSE!

An organism with many cells is called a “multicellular” organism.

A single celled organism is called “unicellular”

Page 20: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

Hibernation is a behavioural adaptation. True or False? (1 point)

TRUE!

Page 21: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

The main reason for the death of so many coral reefs is over fishing. True or False? (1 point)

FALSE!Pollution and

climate change are the major factors

Page 22: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

A vacuole is a clear, jelly-like material that holds the organelles of a cell in place. True or False (1 point)

FALSE!

This is describing “cytoplasm”.A vacuole stores water and food the cell can’t

use right away.

Page 23: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

__________ is only found in plant cells. It contains a green colouring called Chlorophyll.

(2 points)

Chloroplasts

The chlorophyll traps energy from the sun, which is used to make food.

Page 24: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

The main reason that birds migrate is because of a lack of _______

Food

A larger supply of food, not temperature, is the main reason for bird migration.

Page 25: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

A small bird picking food off the teeth of a crocodile’s mouth is an example of a behavioral adaptation called _____(2 points)

Symbiosis

Symbiosis is a relationship between one or more organisms that benefits one or all organisms involved.

Plants produce seeds or spores.

Which characteristic of a living thing does this describe.

Provide one more example in nature.(3 points)

Page 31: Science - Diversity of Life - Review Game

Answer:Seed or spore production is an example of

“reproduction”.

Examples:A frog laying an egg.A sea anemone budding tiny anemones off its

body.
