The study of Life!
Cells, DNA, Genetics, Evolution, Ecology,
Microbiology, Plants, Invertebrates & Vertebrates and
Human Body are all examples of topics
studied.
Throughout the year, students participate in several labs, activities and dissections to help them visualize the concepts being taught.
Biology Honors students will have more complex projects, tests and extra assignments.
Experience What it Means to be Alive!AP Biology• Why Should I take AP Biology?
– Get a head start for college science– Chance to earn college credit
• Prerequisites :– C or better in Biology and/or Chemistry
• What are we going to do?– Anatomy of sheep dissections– Change and modify fruit fly DNA– Extracting DNA – Animal behavior with sow bugs– Study the effects of temperature on
daphnia (water flea) heart beat
Why Take Chemistry??
• Did you know that everything in the world is mostly made up of empty space? Even the floor you walk on!
• Chemistry is the fascinating study of “stuff” (better known as “matter”.)
• Matter is everything inside and around you.• Join us to find out more!
Chemistry Chemistry IPrerequisites:√ Minimum of Algebra I√ Passed Biology I
Chemistry I HonorsPrerequisites:√Passed Biology I√Passed Geometry OR√Enrolled in Geometry at the same time
YOU WILL LEARN…–how to read and utilize the periodic table of elements.
–how to work with chemical equations and solve problems involving chemical formulas.
–how to use lab equipment.
–how chemistry applies to your daily life through hands-on labs & activities.
AP CHEMISTRY Prerequisites
This course is for the student who: •has had success in Chem I or Chem I H. •earned a C in Physics IH (recommended.)•attends class regularly.•is willing to work hard every day
AP CHEMISTRY
This course is for the student who: •has had success in Chem I or Chem I H. •earned a C in Physics IH (recommended.)•attends class regularly.•is willing to work hard every day
•is very demanding and rigorous.
•will build material covered in Chem I/Chem I Honors.
•will prepare students to take Chemistry at the college level.
•students take the AP exam.
•students can receive up to 6 credit hours of college level Chemistry.
AP CHEMISTRY
This course is for the student who: •has had success in Chem I or Chem I H. •earned a C in Physics IH (recommended.)•attends class regularly.•is willing to work hard every day
•Chemistry II may be offered this summer at PPHS for those who want a leg up on AP Chemistry.
Labs that we will do include:•making aspirin (study of esters)
•ice cream freezing point depression
•rock candy supersaturated solutions
•Iodine clock (rate of reaction)
What is AP Environment Science?• The following are topics that
are covered in APES:– Earth Systems and Resources
• Global Water Resources & Use
– Land and Water Use• Agriculture, Forests, & Sustaining
Biodiversity
– Pollution• Air Pollution• Water Pollution
– Energy Uses and Resources• Non-renewable energy (fossil fuels)• Nuclear Energy
– Climate Change and Our Future
• Global Warming
This course is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory environmental science course, both in the wide range of topics studied, and in the depth, specificity and detail of course material
*there is a course syllabus for you to view to see the breakdown of the specific topics

Why Take AP Environmental Science?• The goals of the AP Environmental
Science course are:1.Understanding the
interrelationships in the natural world
2.Identify & analyze environmental problems or challenges
(both natural & human‐made)3.Evaluate the relative risks
associated with these environmental challenges
4.Examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or prevention
• Have the opportunity to earn college credit after taking the AP Exam in May
• Introduction to a college level course
Requirements• To enroll in AP Environmental Science
students should have completed the following classes with a “C” or better:– Biology I/I H– Chemistry I/I H– Alegbra I– Alegbra II or currently be enrolled in
Physics• Understanding physics means understanding more
about the world around you!• Physics is the most fundamental of all the sciences• It describes nature from the smallest particles to the
large scale structure of the universe • It has redefined the way we think of space and time• Physics requires critical thinking, problem solving,
mathematical skills, commitment, and creativity • If you are open minded and looking for a challenging
and satisfying course, Physics is it!
Physics Honors• Prerequisites:
– Physics H Algebra 2 (A,B,C)
• Content:– Laws of motion– Basics of electricity and magnetism– Optics

Anatomy is the study of the structure and shape of the body; Physiology
is the study of how these body parts work.
Students build life size skeletons!
We also do actual dissections of a sheep’s brain, cow’s eye, a sheep’s heart and a cat.
