He/she will developand maintain an independent extramurally funded

study is encouraged. Teaching assignments will include courses
within the Chemistry & Bio-chemistry department and the
University-wide Toxicology program, with opportunities for the
developmentof special topics courses in the applicant’s area of
interest.

OpenPlantSynthetic Biology Research CentreOpenPlant is a
BBSRC-EPSRC funded Synthetic Biology Research Centre. It is based
in
the United Kingdom and is a collaboration between the University
of Cambridge and
the John Innes Centre and The Sainsbury Laboratory, Norwich. The
OpenPlant SBRC
is focused on the development of open foundational technologies
for plant synthetic
biology and their application for engineering new traits in crop
systems.
OpenPlant will (i) fund interdisciplinary eforts in plant
Synthetic Biology, to explore
novel foundational technologies and applications, build shared
resources and
provide a point of exchange for young scientists and
entrepreneurs; (ii) promote
two-tier intellectual property models that will promote sharing
of DNA components
and freedom-to-operate for commercial applications of plant
synthetic biology,
and (iii) address responsible innovation, and explore the
potential wider impacts of
synthetic biology on sustainable practices in agriculture,
bioproduction, land use

Foundational technologies
As part of the OpenPlant initiative, we will implement:
open-source DNA registries for sharing plant specifc
parts;Marchantia polymorpha as a major new plant
chassis for Synthetic Biology; new DNA parts for the
control and quantitative imaging of genetic circuits in
plants; techniques for routine genome-scale engineering
in plants; and software tools with improved performance
for assembly of synthetic gene circuits and cellular
morphogenesis.
Trait Engineering
The development of new foundational tools and parts
will directly contribute to the engineering of new traits
in plants, such as: altered photosynthesis and leaf
structure; modifed production of plant carbohydrates;
engineered pathways for the metabolic engineering
of natural products; new forms of symbiosis and
nitrogen fxation; methods for high level production of
biomolecules by virus-derived mechanisms.

The MAX DELBRÜCK CENTER FOR MOLECULAR MEDICINE (MDC)in
Berlin-Buch is a research institution funded by the German
FederalGovernment and the State of Berlin. The MDC is a member of
theHelmholtz Association of German Research Centers.

The MDC is a leading international research center in the field
of mole-cular medicine. Its scientists combine basic research in
molecular bio-logy, genetics and systems biology with research in
cardiovascular andmetabolic diseases, cancer, and diseases of the
nervous system. MDCresearchers collaborate closely with colleagues
at Berlin universities,Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and
many other institutions. TheMDC and the Charité have jointly
established the Experimental andClinical Research Center (ECRC) to
pursue translational medicine on theBerlin-Buch campus. This
collaboration will be significantly expanded andintensified through
the creation of the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH). TheMDC
participates institutionally as a member of the German Center
forCardiovascular Research (DZHK) and the National Cohort.
Additionally,the MDC works with biotech companies and the
pharmaceutical industryin developing applications from its
research.
The MDC has a current annual budget of approximately EUR 90
million,including third-party funds. It employs over 1,100 people
and hosts about400 guest scientists.
The MDC invites applications for the position of
Scientific Director and Chairpersonof the Board of Directors
to be filled as soon as possible.
The Chairperson of the Board of Directors is the official
representative ofthe Foundation and shares responsibility for the
operative managementof the MDC with the Administrative Director. As
Scientific Director, he/she is responsible for the research areas
listed above and the centralscientific facilities of the MDC.
Principal duties include overall planningand ensuring high-quality
research, in cooperation with the various orga-nizational entities
and the Supervisory Board. The Scientific Directorshall further the
development of the MDC and its scientific achievementswithin
national and international contexts and shall also serve as a
mem-ber of the directorates of the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH)
and theGerman Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK). The new
ScientificDirector/Chairperson of the Board is also expected to
participate in asignificant way in the development and
implementation of the researchstrategy for the Berlin Institute of
Health (BIH).
These responsibilities require a candidate who has a strong
internationalreputation as a leader in basic biomedical research
and/or translationalmedicine, as well as experience at a high level
in managing large scien-tific institutes. Additional requirements
are an ability to develop strategicplans, to present and implement
these persuasively and assertively, andto integrate staff members
effectively. The Scientific Director must bea leader within the
Center and represent the MDC externally as a goodcommunicator with
skill and confidence. Excellent English and Germanskills are
required.
Initially the position will be filled for five years. An
extension is possible.The salary follows the remunerative framework
for prominent universityprofessors.

Faculty Position in the Life Sciences
The Stowers Institute forMedical Research invites innovative
young scientists in the Life Sciences tosubmit applications for a
faculty position. We anticipate making an appointment in 2015 at
the rankofAssistant Investigator. Research programs of interest
include, but are not limited to: computationalbiology,
neuroscience, developmental and cell biology, genomics, stem cell
biology, regenerativebiology and epigenetics. Our interests
encompass a broad gamut of experimental organisms andapproaches.
The successful candidate will beneft from and complement the
Institution’s existingstrengths in genetics and epigenetics, cell
and chromosome biology, stem cells and regenerativebiology,
developmental biology and evolution, and biochemistry and
neuroscience.
The position is fully funded throughout the candidate’s
appointment. This includes $600,000 peryear for full salary support
and research funding, in addition to start-up funds and ongoing
needs forequipment. The initial appointment is for 6 years and is
then subject to renewal every 6 to 7 years. Intotal, the package
for a junior position is more than $3.5 million over the frst term
and increasessignifcantly after promotion. In addition,
investigators may take advantage of exceptional corefacilities and
technology centers staffed by over 100 scientists. Stowers
investigators have multipleopportunities to be involved in the
Institute’s Graduate School program.
