STC Program Goal – 1989

“NSF established the STC Program tohelp maintain U.S. pre-eminence in

science and technology, and

ensure the requisite pool of scientists with thequality and breadth of experience

required to meet the changing needs ofscience and society – ingredientsessential to successful economic

competitiveness.”

Research: Bringing together focused resources to address complex, interdisciplinary research questions.

STEM Talent Development: Provide a rich environment for encouraging future scientists, engineers, and educators to take risks… Integrating education and research through discovery-based experiences…build alliances across educational spectrum and STEM workforce capacity.

Diversity: STCs partner with institutions serving students from underrepresented STEM groups.

Knowledge Transfer: Offer catalytic environment where technical exchange and innovation can occur.

FOUR PILLARS

Page 11: Science and Technology Centers: Integrative Partnership Presented by Kathryn Sullivan Senior Advisor National Science Foundation.

Multi-institutional, 5-10 major partners

15-70 Senior researchers

20-140 graduate students

Overall budget US $ 5.2-12 mil/year

5 full/part time support staff

CENTER PROFILE

Page 12: Science and Technology Centers: Integrative Partnership Presented by Kathryn Sullivan Senior Advisor National Science Foundation.

NSF expects STCs to demonstrate leadership in the involvement of groups traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering, at all levels within the Center…

STCs are strongly encouraged to form meaningful, substantive and long-term partnerships with minority-serving institutions, women’s colleges and institutions that primarily serve students with disabilities…
