An Introduction to Science and the Scientific Method
What is science?
• It is the knowledge covering truths or the operation of general laws obtained and tested through the scientific method.• This means it is about studying and
testing stuff.
Branches of Science
• There are three branches of science. They all cover something different.• Physical science• Earth and Space science• Life Science
Physical Science
• Atoms, molecule, elements, and compounds
• Energy, motion, forces, and work
• Heat, light, sound, and electricity
Earth and Space Science
• Soil, rocks, and minerals• Fossils• Solar system
Life Science
• Plant, animals, and cells• Human body, diseases, and
cures• Life, growth, and death• How all life is related to
other life and to the whole planet
The Scientific Method
• Scientists use a certain series of steps in order to test something. • This is called the scientific method.
• Identify• Observe• Hypothesis• Experiment• Conclusion
Identify a Problem
• The first step in the scientific method is identifying a problem. • Ask yourself a question about why
something is like it is or what would happen if I did this.
Make an Observation
• What is happening or what is different?
• Why is this happening or why is it different?
Form a Hypothesis
• A hypothesis is an educated guess.• This is happening or this is different
because…
Test the Hypothesis
• This means do your experiment. • You experiment, then make your
observations and collect your data.
Form a Conclusion
• Look at your data and observations and form a conclusion about your hypothesis.• My hypothesis was correct or
incorrect because…
