From Trucking Contractor to Sewer Rehab SpecialistWilli Schwalm is the patriarch of this provider of pipeline, sewer and industrial services headquar-tered in Bad Hersfeld / Germany. Originating as a waste trucking company in the 1940’s and 1950’s under the leadership of founder Georg Schwalm, the company made a name for themselves with a successful track record spanning many decades. Driven by an unrelenting entrepreneurial spirit, his son Willi Schwalm looked into the sewer rehabilita-tion technologies in use at that time. Blazing new trails on his own, he developed machines that were not available on the marketplace. Today he is the owner of numerous patents. A key push
forward occurred in the area of robotic sewer inspection and repair, i.e. renovating underground lines without need for digging and other disrup-tions. Sewer cleaning and trenchless partial sewer rehab emerged as activities in great demand and remain so to this day.
Spin-Off and Specialization in Two Core Businesses: Sewer Rehab and Robotics In 2008 the robotic business activities were moved to a newly formed company, leaving the service activities and lateral packing manufacturing in Willi Schwalm’s original operation. From this time onward, two companies have operated under the Schwalm flag: service provider Schwalm Kanal-
sanierung and manufacturer Schwalm Robotic GmbH, a producer of robots and equipment for trenchless sewer renovation. Both companies op-erate today under the direction of third-generation family member Martin Schwalm. His wife Angelika Schwalm is the calming pole in this fast-paced business. Willi Schwalm remains active in the fabrication of lateral connection packers, although these days somewhat more in the background. The official entry in the commercial register for Schwalm Kanalsanierung in fact specifies Willi Schwalm as the proprietor and Martin Schwalm as a registered merchant. For many old hands in the industry, the company goes by the name “Willi Schwalm”. Some refer to it simply as “Schwalm”.
The company name Schwalm Kanalsanierung has long been an established domain name on the internet. More and more the name Schwalm Kanal-sanierung is used when referring to the company. Times are changing.While cooperating closely, both companies con-tinue to evolve further. Schwalm Robotic has an extensive base of enthusiastic customers in coun-tries worldwide. Yet, in spite of this success, the Schwalms still have their feet planted firmly on the ground. The ground of their region, their homeland with its picturesque scenery and architecture. Their corporate motto is “Innovation Based on Tradition”. And with tradition, of course, comes the duty to hold the torch high and pass it on.

Included are public and privately owned pipelines, cesspools, cisterns, grease traps, etc. A wide range of customers are served including cities and communities as well as companies and property owners. On-Site Surveys and Reinstatement. Another important business activity for Schwalm is partial sewer rehab using robotic systems. Schwalm maintains two 12 tonne sewer rehab vehicles dedicated to these activities. Each vehicle is equipped with a specialized shop for partial relining and an operator room for robotic remote control. The vehicles incorporate supply systems and auxiliary aggregates which make them independent of external utilities supply. A TV inspection van is also used to carry out video inspection of sewer lines. While doing much work locally in and around Bad Hersfeld and the surrounding Hessian countryside, Schwalm also carries out projects in Bavaria and on occasion outside of Germany.

Mr. Hat Liner Packer. The Leader, The TrailblazerWork in sewers is nothing for the weak at heart. The people and equipment involved must be able to withstand rough going. Yet nonetheless, those doing the work need to rely on fine intuition as well. Willi Schwalm knows this craft from way back. Experience has shown that hardware used in sewers, to be effective and reliable, must be of the highest quality. Anything else is of little or no use. Willi Schwalm has built lateral connection packers in his machine shop for many years. For those not familiar with these machines, they are special systems used to install short liners and hat liners in underground sewer lines. The process is similar to stent insertion as practiced
in vascular surgery. Willi Schwalm has a patent for his hat liner packer. And his rights to the name “Hutliner” (the original German term) as a desig-nation for hat liner seals are also protected by law in Germany.
A hat liner packer is essentially made up of steel and rubber. That sounds simple enough, but in reality it is not. It must be designed, measu-red, cut and welded together. Nephew Bruno Schwalm is responsible for all steel working ope-rations. Willi Schwalm takes care of all matters relating to rubber materials, assembly and quality control. Selected suppliers provide cut-to-size components made from premium materials.
The craftwork done here is a cross between manual craftsmanship and an industrial joint ven-ture. The results: top-of-the-line machines which can be sent into sewer lines between 100 and 800 mm in diameter to effect remote-controlled repair. And why the hat? To line and therefore resurface defective junctions between the main line and lateral branch lines. And there is a lot of work to be done here.
Long ago, Willi Schwalm transferred the responsibility for management of the company to his son Martin. But even to this day, Willi Schwalm makes hat liner packers in his machine shop in Schulstrasse 10 in Bad Hersfeld. No one

can say for sure how many he has built to date. The number is probably somewhere around 1000. At first, no one kept count. Since then, consecutive serial numbers up to 760 have been given. One thousand machines. Not a whole lot, one might think. But a hat liner packer is not a Game Boy. Only companies in the sewer rehabilitation business own such machines. Imitations are out there. But they often are useless. In the sewer rehab industry, everyone knows the name Willi Schwalm. There is hardly a sewer rehab contractor around that is not using at least one hat liner packer from Willi Schwalm. In any event, the demand in the marketplace is such that all suppliers are kept busy. The total
length of sewer lines to be serviced in Germany alone is greater than the distance from here to the moon. Sewer line rehab is an never-ending story. And down here on the Earth as well, there is a lot to be done. But not by fly-by-night artists. It’s no secret that the regulations governing quality assurance and reinstatement of sewer lines are getting stricter by the day.
A stone’s throw away, at Industriestrasse 16 in Bad Hersfeld, is where sister company Schwalm Robotic GmbH is located. This is where the packers are sold and shipped from. This is where Schwalm is still searching for new paths and better solutions in the fields of trenchless sewer
rehabilitation and robotic systems. Here too, the trailblazers are at work. Schwalm at work.
