On the first day of Respect every student received a ‘Respect Note’ that was written by either someone at home or school to remind students that they are respected by others and encouraged them to continue the theme by showing respect to those around them also.

Each morning, announcements were dedicated to raising awareness about a specific group or thing focusing on showing respect or kindness.

Students in Grades 3- 5 participated in a "Mix it Up at Lunch.“ Students received a random number and sat with other students on their grade level. Students were encouraged to meet new peers and learn new things about students in their grade level, all while showing respect and kindness.

Students and Staff wore different colors each day to support the following: October 4th GREEN to respect the environment or BLUE to take a stand against bullying, October 5th PINK for those with an illness or disability, October 6th YELLOW for the courage to stand up for yourself or others against bullying and October 7th RED to respect everyone..

Counselor provided classroom lesson plans for each class which

focused on the themes including respect and kindness, as well as

bullying.

Posters with quotes about respect, kindness, ‘having fun vs making fun’, anti-bullying and conflict resolution posted around the building.

The first day of Respect was associated with a word of the day, ATTITUDE. Attitude is the way you think and feel about someone or something. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference!” Always remember, a bad attitude is like a flat tire …you can’t go anywhere until you change it.

Tuesday’s colors were BLUE and GREEN. BLUE is the color that signifies that you are taking a stand against bullying. GREEN shows you have respect for our environment. Wednesday’s students wore PINK to show respect for people with illness and/or disabilities. Thursday YELLOW to show courage to stand up for others. Friday students wore RED to show respect for everyone.

Respect Notes – parents filled out notes for their children at Back to School Night on why they respect them, and the notes were delivered during the Week of Respect. Teachers also filled them out for their students.

Thank you cards for our school nurse, safety personnel, cafeteria and custodial staff, school secretaries

Announcements and classroom lessons all week on respect, diversity, kindness, being a ‘upstander’, peaceful resolutions

Lore Elementary SchoolTheme: What can we do to help keep our school and community safe?

Every student was given a slip of paper to write their own safety idea. Students who returned their safety idea were given a sticker. Safety ideas that went above and beyond expectations were shared on the morning announcements and all ideas are included on the “What can you do to help keep our school and community safe? wall

Morning Announcements each day had a themed safety tip:

October 17th – Know the basics, home phone number, parent/guardian cellphone number, address and their parents’ or guardians’ first and last name. Knowing this information can help keep you safe.

October 18th – Practice for emergencies. We practice fire drills and evacuations at school, practice these drills at home too, to keep students safe and happy we have 5th grade safety patrols that help in the hallways. Safety Patrols job is to make sure students are following the rules.

October 19th – If you see something, say something! If you are in school or on the playground and see an unsafe situation, go tell an adult. NEVER open any door to let a stranger or a person you know into the building. To keep us safe we have our school security person, they check visitors into building and do hourly door checks. School security person is always available to help any student.

October 20th – Always find an adult to help in an emergency situation. BUT if an adult isn’t around and you need help from the police, fire department or need ambulance you should dial 911. ONLY dial 911 in an emergency.

October 21st – Dress appropriately for playground and for sports. Remove necklaces, purses, scarves and clothing with draw strings that can get caught in equipment. Always make sure your shoes are tied to prevent falls.

Ewing Police Officers visit our school often. You should never be scared to see a police officer at our school. Police officers visit our school to make sure everyone and everything is safe. Police officers are here to help no matter what!

National “Mix It Up At Lunch Day” is on October 25th!

Information and resources for parents and families on school website’s guidance page on how to continue these discussions at home with their child.
