WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY: IDEA 2004 SECTION 601 PURPOSE OF THE LAW To ensure that all children with disabilities

have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.

TRANSITION SERVICES: The term “transition services” means a coordinated set of activities for a child with a disability that— ◦ Is designed to be within a results-oriented process

that is focused on improving the academic and function achievement of the child with a disability to facilitate the child’s movement from school to post-school activities, including post-secondary education, vocational education, integrated employment (including supported employment), continuing and adult education, adult services, independent living, or community participation;

◦ Is based on the individual child’s needs, taking into account the child’s strengths, preferences, interests, and

◦ Includes instruction, related services, community experiences, the development of employment and other post-school adult living objectives, and when appropriate, acquisition of daily living skills and functional vocational evaluation.

Persons with disabilities have many choices and possibilities in life!

Persons with disabilities can lead independent lives and have the opportunity to make choices and life decisions

Transition is a team process between a student, family, school and community agencies

Significant future and life planning needs to take place as early as possible. It is never too early!

More specific community, neighborhood, integrated options and outcomes upon graduation are needed

All persons with disabilities are employable and have the right to that opportunity. Example: Roy

Intensive career planning needs to take place early on with all options and possibilities examined

Agencies need to be identified and involved in the planning process earlier on.

Duplicate assessments should be eliminated
