Meet our Incoming Specialist Students

Jess Clark is a first year Ed.S. student in the School Psychology

program. She is originally from Reading, Pennsylvania and graduated

from Millersville University in 2013 with a B.A. in Psychology and a

minor in Sociology. During her undergraduate career her research

focused on male and female body image and anorexia nervosa. After

graduation, Jess worked as Therapeutic Support Staff at a counseling

services company in Reading. She is currently placed in Boyle County

for practicum.

Ashante' Givens is a first year Ed.S. student in the School Psychology

Program. She received a B.S. in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State

University in 2014. Ashante' is currently pursuing the graduate certificate in

Developmental Disabilities from the Human Development Institute. She is a

Teaching Assistant in the Psychology Department. She is currently placed in

Scott County for practicum.

Matthew Lakamp is a first year Ed.S student in the School

Psychology Program. He received his B.S. in psychology from

College of Mount St. Joseph. He also played intercollegiate base-

ball for four years during his undergraduate career. Matthew is

originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. His research interests include

Autism and bullying in schools. He is currently placed in Franklin

County for practicum.

Meet our Incoming Specialist Students

Kheo Ly is a first year student in the School Psychology Ed.S. Program. She

has her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from The University of Southern

Mississippi. During her undergraduate career, she worked as a research

assistant and inquired on factors related to youth development and behavioral

problems. This led her to become a co-author on a poster presentation at

the Southeastern Psychological Association in New Orleans, Louisiana, as well

as the American Psychological Association in Orlando, Florida. She has also

worked directly with at-risk children as a youth care worker at a psychiatric

residential treatment facility. Kheo will be completing the Graduate

Certificate in Developmental Disabilities through the Human Development

Institute. She is currently placed in Clark County for practicum.

Diana Schreck is a first year Ed.S Student in the School Psychology

Program. She graduated from University of Wisconsin Green Bay this past

May with her B.A. in psychology. She is originally from Muskego, Wisconsin.

During her undergraduate career her research focused on minority student

success predictors within the classroom as well as invention techniques to

improve their performance. She currently is a Graduate Assistant for the

School Psychology Program. Her research interests include minority and

low income student success within the classroom. She is currently placed in

Franklin County for practicum.

Bethany Stump is a first year EdS student in the School Psychology

program. She is from Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from Northwest

Missouri State University in 2014 with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in

Sociology. Her undergraduate research included male and female percep-

tions of marriage, and how room temperature affects emotions. Bethany will

be working on the Graduate Certificate in Developmental Disabilities. She is

also a Research Assistant at the Human Development Institute, working with

the Post School Outcomes. She is currently placed in Franklin County for

practicum.

Meet our Incoming Specialist Students

Emily Yingling is a first year Ed.S student in the School Psychology

program. She graduated from Butler University in 2012 with a BS in Early

and Middle Childhood Education. Emily is a licensed special education and

elementary school teacher. She taught special education for a year in Indi-

ana and then 4th grade in Fayette County at Garden Springs Elemen-

tary. As a school psychology student she is interested in issues of social

justice and early interventions. She is currently placed in Scott County for

practicum.

Katherine Terrell is a first year Ed.S student in the School Psychol-

ogy program. Originally from Indiana, Katherine graduated from Indiana

University in 2009 with degrees in History and Art History. She has

spent the last 5 years as an elementary and middle school Special Educa-

tion teacher in Nashville, Tennessee. She has a Master's in Education

from Belmont University. Katherine will be working on earning the

Graduate Certificate in Developmental Disabilities through the Human

Development Institute. She is also a Research Assistant for the Human

Development Institute working with the Supported Higher Education

Program (SHEP) and the College of Career Readiness projects. She is

currently placed in Boyle County for practicum.

Cara Sumner is a first year Ed.S Student in the School Psychol-

ogy Program. She graduated from Bowling Green State University

in Bowling Green, Ohio this past May. She received her Bachelor

of Arts in Psychology. She is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, and

moved to Lexington in the beginning of August. This semester,

Cara has a full-time assistantship with the Psychology department in

the College of Arts and Sciences as a Teaching Assistant for several

Psych 100 lab sections. She is currently placed in Clark County for

practicum.

Meet our Incoming Doctoral Students

Colleen Cornelius is a first year doctoral student in

the school psychology program. Colleen graduated from

the University of Kentucky with a B.A. in Education and

from the University of Virginia with an M.Ed. in Reading

Education. She has 8 years of classroom teaching experi-

ence and 3 years of experience as a reading specialist. She

has worked with students in grades Kindergarten through

grade 12 in classroom, small group, and one-on-one set-

tings through her roles as teacher, reading specialist, tutor

and coach. Her interests focus on attention and how it

correlates with reading ability in females. She is currently

placed in Boyle County for practicum.

Rachel Jacob is a first year PhD student in the school

psychology program. She earned a B.A. in psychology from

Binghamton University. Her undergraduate research took

place in a psychopathology lab focused on schizophrenia.

Upon graduation Rachel worked in a special needs preschool

and kindergarten. She currently has a research assistantship

with Dr. Campbell. Her research interests focus on children

with Autism Spectrum disorder and their performance on

intelligence tests. She is currently placed in Boyle County for

practicum.

Chelsea E. Sheehan is a first year student in the School Psy-

chology PhD program. She graduated from Castleton State College

with a B.A. in psychology. While at Castleton she was part of a

research team, which focused on the blame of rape victims and how

to overcome this obstacle. They presented their research at the

2014 American Psychology-Law Conference. They also presented

at the annual Scholarship Celebration at Castleton. While doing so

they received the Dean's Scholar Award for outstanding student

work. While at Castleton Chelsea was also the recipient of the

Academic Excellence Award for the Psychology Department. She

currently has an assistantship with Dr. Fisher as her research assis-

tant. Chelsea's research interests are minority students, specifically

mixed racial individuals. She is currently placed in Boyle County for

practicum.

Katie Hastings, a second year EdS

student in the School Psychology

program was awarded the Jennie

S. Ewald scholarship through the

Kentucky Association of Psychologists in the Schools

(KAPS). This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate

student demonstrating leadership and promise in the field

of school psychology.

Congratulations to Dr. Hammond for her

promotion from Lecturer to Clinical Associ-

ate Professor!

Dr. Ruble’s Invited Speaking Engagement

Dr. Ruble presented in Sydney Australia in

August. More than 450 participants attended

the inaugural Aspect Autism in Education

Conference. Aspect Autism serves more

than 1,000 students with autism spectrum

disorder and is the largest educational pro-

vider in Australia.

Congratulations to Dr. Fedewa for her promotion to

Associate Professor with Tenure!

Dr. Fisher’s NIH/NIDA Funding

Co-Investigator ($155,000). Research Supplement to Promote

Diversity in Health-Related Research, received investigator level

support for a project investigating the use of mindfulness as an

intervention for substance users with high levels of negative

urgency (5P50DA005312 PI: Michael Bardo). Funded through

the National Institute of Health (NIH) – National Institute on

Drug Abuse (NIDA) on 7-1-2014 through 6-30- 2016. (2014)

Student Affiliates in School Psychology

SASP had a booth at the annual COE K-Week

event, informing incoming graduate and under-

graduate students about school psychology and

the SASP organization.

SASP is participating in UK’s intramural flag

football league this fall. The team plays other

organizations/student affiliate groups, such

as the Medical School, Pharmacy School, and

ROTC.

Since the beginning of the semester, SASP has already

made a strong presence in the College of Education

and School Psychology program. Many more exciting

events are already planned for the year. Join the SASP

listserv to get up to date information regarding events!
