Here is the story of the incredibly brave Anne Frank on her 91st birth anniversary. For her 13th birthday on June 12, 1942 in Amsterdam, Anne Frank received a diary as a gift from her parents. She started writing letters in it to her imaginary friend Kitty. Over the years, this diary, which is a rst- hand account of the plight of the Jews during World War II, continues to help those living through turbulent times. The Secret Annex Fearing persecution by the Nazis, the Frank family, along with four other Jews, went into hiding in a secret attic annex in the back of Anne’s father, Otto’s company. They were in hiding for over two years, never going outside and living on rations for three people. They lived in constant fear of being found by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps. Hide and seek Cooped up in the annex with blacked out windows and separated from her friends, Anne started pouring her thoughts into her diary. She used it to express her fear, boredom and the struggles of growing up in hiding. Once during the period of hiding, the Dutch government made a radio broadcast to people to hold on to their war documents and diaries. This inspired Anne to rewrite her diary, but before she was done, their hiding place was discovered. The last entry in her diary is dated August 1, 1944. All the family members were arrested and sent to concentration camps. To this day, it is not known who informed the police about their hiding place. A few months later, Anne and Margot died of exhaustion while on their way to a camp in Auschwitz. Among the residents of the annex, Anne’s father Otto was the only survivor. Posthumously After the war ended, Otto discovered Anne’s diaries. One of the family’s helpers, Miep Gies had preserved them in her desk drawer. Otto read that Anne had wanted to become a writer or a journalist and that she had intended to publish her stories about life in the Secret Annex. So he in June 1947, he printed 3,000 copies of “Het Achterhuis” (“The Secret Annex”). Today, it has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. People all over the world were introduced to Anne's story and in 1960 the hiding place became a museum: the Anne Frank House. Children from all around the world continue to write letters to Anne as if she were their friend. Did you know? ** There are three versions of Anne Frank’s diary: A, B, and C. A is the rst draft; B is Anne’s own revision; while C is the one published by Anne’s father, Otto in 1947 under the title “The Hidden Annex.” ** Her sister, Margot, who was three years older than Anne, also wrote a diary – although it has never been found. ** “The Diary of Anne Frank” oered a ray of hope to Nelson Mandela, the future president of South Africa during the 18 years he spent locked up on Robben Island. He even urged his fellow prisoners to read the diary. Activity Anne had to pack up all her belongings to prepare for an uncertain life in hiding for an indefinite period of time. Imagine if you were in her shoes, and write down what possessions would you take with you to the annex. OH REALLY? “The Diary of Anne Frank” is one of the most read non-ction books in history. It has been translated into 70 languages. In addition to her diary, she wrote essays, letters, short stories and even a novel. She loved making lists of things to buy after she returned to school. A QUEST c Disaster in midair It was a cold January day (Jan. 28, 1986) when the space shuttle Challenger took o from Cape Canaveral, Florida in the U.S. Many had gathered at the launch site and it was being beamed live on television and radio across the country as the mission included Christa McAulie, the rst high school teacher to be sent into space. NASA intended to inspire schoolchildren to take interest in mathematics, science and space exploration. McAulie had been chosen from over 11,000 candidates for the coveted honour. After lifto, the spacecraft streaked across the clear blue sky and 73 seconds later, it disintegrated. Stupeed onlookers watched as Challenger was enveloped in a plume of dense white smoke. Within seconds, the debris plunged into the Atlantic Ocean and all seven members of the crew perished. The incident sent shock waves around the world. It brought NASA’s space shuttle programme to an abrupt halt for over two years. The photograph taken by NASA’s tracking camera is a grim reminder of the dangers of human spaceight. Treasure house of fossils The Shivalik Hills form a mountain range in the outer Himalayas and stretch from the Indus in the west to the Brahmaputra in the east. They are one of the richest sites for fossils in Asia. The fossil of Sivapithecus, a kind of ape, was found here. The Shivaliks were also home to a variety of animals, including the early ancestors of the sloth bear, girae and tortoise. The Shivalik Fossil Park and Museum, set up in 1974 by the Geological Survey of India in association with the Himachal Pradesh government, is located in Suketi village in Sirmaur district. The idea was to preserve the fossil site and the fossils from vandals and fossil hunters. The park occupies a forested area of 1.5 sq. km and has an open air display of life-sized breglass models of six extinct mammals that roamed here 2.5 million years ago. The museum inside the park has a collection of vertebrate fossils and skeleton recovered from the geological formations composed of sandstone and clay at Suketi. The exhibits are studied by visiting research scholars from all over the world. Federer, who had lost the last three French Open nals to Nadal, won the title, completed the career Grand Slam and equalled Pete Sampras’ then-record of 14 Grand Slam titles. Federer defeated Nadal’s vanquisher Robin Soderling in the nal. WHEN BARCA DID THE TREBLE AGAIN A day after defeating Juventus 3-1 in the Champions League nal at Berlin, Germany, Barcelona players rejoiced in an open-top bus celebration in Spain. Having already won the La Liga and Copa del Rey titles in coach Luis Enrique’s rst season in charge of the club, the Champions League victory allowed them to complete the treble. This was Barca’s second treble, having achieved it in 2008-09 as well. INJURED DHAWAN’S HEROIC KNOCK A bouncer from Australian paceman Pat Cummins hurt India’s opener Shikhar Dhawan. Despite the injury, Dhawan battled on and played through pain, scoring 117 from 109 balls to lead India to 352 for ve – a total that let India win by 36 runs. Player of the match Dhawan, however, was ruled out of the rest of the World Cup because of the injury to his left thumb. India and Australia nished rst and second in the table at the end of the group stages, but both sides were knocked out in the semi-nals. A fun game for the weekend This is a fun game that you can play with your family. Known popularly as ‘Raja, Rani, Chor, Police’, all you need to play this game are four chits of paper, a notebook and a pen. The rules are simple – Tear one-sided papers into four equal parts and write down King, Queen, Robber, Police on the chits and fold them. Start the round by shuing and throwing the chits on the table/oor. Each player grabs a chit as soon as possible. Now, each player opens their chit and carefully sees what role they have got. Players need to ensure no one else knows what’s on their chit. The player who has got the police chit needs to identify the player with the robber chit. The round ends once the guess is made. Divide the notebook into four columns with each containing each of the players’ names. Once a round is complete, note down each player’s score – assign a score to each role and ensure it is dierent. If the police identies the robber, the robber gets zero, and the police, the assigned score. If the police fails, then the robber gets the score assigned to the police and the police gets a zero. You can introduce new roles based on the number of people playing. But the ultimate aim is for the police to catch the robber in each round. A GAME ON c

A fun game for the weekend
This is a fun game that you can play with your family. Known popularly as‘Raja, Rani, Chor, Police’, all you need to play this game are four chits of
