leader Zaki Baruti, an activist whois also president of the St. Louis-based Universal African PeoplesOrganization. Rest assuredly, wereasking people not to vote for SteveStenger.

Also running are LibertarianParty candidate Theo Brown Sr. andConstitution Party candidate JoePassanise. The coalition did not throwits support to a particular opponentof Stenger. Baruti said he has not yet

decided whom he will support.Baruti promised acts of civil

disobedience from the coalition in thefuture, though he did not elaborate.

We welcome any type of protest tokeep in the public light the injusticethat occurred with Michael Brown, hesaid.

Rita Mauchenheimer, who lives inthe Skinker DeBaliviere area, said sheattended the press conference becauseshe respects what the coalition isdoing.

Its about justice, she said. Whathappened to that young man (MichaelBrown) is unjust. I feel like I need tostand in solidarity with these people.

Meanwhile, a group of African-American Democratic leaders calledthe Fannie Lou Hamer DemocraticCoalition named for the lateMississippi civil rights advocate

also has formed in the midst offallout from Ferguson. The grouphas not yet decided whom to back forcounty executive, said county councilChairwoman Hazel Erby, D-FirstDistrict, who is heading the coalition.

Were still exploring our options,Erby said. We will announce nextweek, she said, adding that hercoalition is not working with theJustice for Michael Brown LeadershipCoalition at this point.

Erby said the goal of her coalition isto support candidates who have ourcommunitys best interest at heartand that she would support whichevercandidate the group backs.

While the coalitions might convincesome Democratic voters not to supportStenger, some Republicans couldactually be attracted to him, accordingto pundits.

Criticism of Steve Stenger becausehe supports Robert McCulloch mightvery well garner him some supportivevotes among white Republicans whootherwise would have cast theirballots for Rick Stream, said Terry

Jones, professor of political science at

the University of Missouri-St. Louis. These votes would be modest in

number, but since St. Louis Countyis now clearly Democratic, no GOPcandidate can afford much erosion inthe Republican base.

Jones said the reaction amongRepublicans is most likely to occurin Stengers backyard, among SouthCounty whites over age 45.

Stream agreed that its possiblethe coalitions could help his campaign.

Ive spoken to a number of ofcials

in the Hamer coalition, he said. Ihavent spoken to the other group.Ive spoken to a lot of elected ofcials

and citizens and they have been veryreceptive to my candidacy becausethey know I have a heart for theircommunity.

Formation of the coalitions comeson the heels of a raucous countycouncil meeting Sept. 16 in whichdemonstrators angrily demandedStenger call on McCulloch to stepaside.

St. Louis County Police haveassigned a security detail to Stengerfollowing threats posted on socialmedia sites, said Ofcer Brian

Schellman, spokesman for thedepartment. Stream declined thesame protection, Schellman said.

Stenger did not respond to requestsfor comment for this story. He has saidhe will back McCulloch, who has beenthe elected prosecutor for more thantwo decades. He said he has condence

in McCullochs ability to bring a fair

    outcome to the Brown case.
