We run a range of exciting and professionally relevant
postgraduate courses. You can choose from our MA in Criminology and
Criminal Justice and our suite of LLM and PhD courses in law, many
of which are internationally or commercially focused. If your
interest is in qualifying as a solicitor then you can opt for our
LLM/Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
You will benefit from being taught by dedicated and enthusiastic
tutors, who have a range of academic, professional and practical
skills and experience relevant to the courses they teach. A number
of tutors engage in highly specialised academic research, others
are professionally focused, having practised as solicitors in city,
regional or high street firms, government offices or charities.

from a global perspective, identifying key characteristics of doing

Course overviewYou will start the course with a foundation week.
You will be introduced in workshops to the course and the skills of
interviewing and advising, legal writing, and drafting,
professional conduct and taxation.
Following this foundation week you will start your study of
stage one of the course, until February. From March to June you
will study stage two. To complete the LPC, you must pass stages one
and two within five years. On successful completion of stages 1 and
2 you can choose to exit with the traditional Postgraduate Diploma
in Legal Practice, having covered all the compulsory professional
elements. Alternatively you can do the complete LLM Legal Practice
Course. This offers you an optional Masters module. You will have
the opportunity to study Research Methodology and to research and
write a 15,000 word dissertation on an area related to legal
practice.

Career options
Our graduates are employed in a wide range of legal positions,
including private practice from trainee to partnership level, and
in other areas such as the Crown Prosecution Service, the

The dissertation is an original piece of research into legal
practice of between 10,000 to 12,000 words. Research undertaken
must be self-managed though students will be assigned a
dissertation supervisor either from staff at the University of West
London with similar research interests or from within the legal
profession.

Course overviewThe research and methodology module is more
detailed and provides more teaching hours than similar courses from
other providers. The module bridges the much needed gap between
most LLM and MPhil/PhD research methods, and will enable you to
write a research proposal that will eventually underpin your
dissertation.
The module is divided into four parts.

traditional PhD. It has been designed to appeal to legal
practitioners and those engaged in professions which demand
practical understanding and application of the law to explore the

Course overviewThe unique elements of the Professional PhD in
Law are its modular approach. The course combines work-based
supervision with a flexible delivery so as to ensure retention and
completion. There are six modules.
Underlying the core of the doctoral programme is the research
project undertaken by you. You will be required to submit a
research proposal and a research plan at the end of the required
Research Methods 1 module. You will also need to produce an upgrade
report (20,000 words) at the end of the Research Methods for
Professional Practice module, which will set out the theoretical
reasoning for the research and outline the ways in which the
research will further professional knowledge in the area. You will
be supported by your supervisor to undertake your doctoral thesis
project, ultimately producing a 40,000 word dissertation.
Career options
The Professional Doctorate in Law promotes the development of
substantive professional orientated legal research skills and
outcomes sought by both regulatory bodies and the broader community
of legal practitioners. It offers both the possibility to proceed
in academic career and to advance in the legal sector and other
