The recently opened Materials and Minerals Science Building is a catalyst for innovative learning and teaching and high quality research in the materials and minerals science and engineering hub located at the University’s Mawson Lakes campus. The building facilitates the engagement between undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students, higher degree research students, leading researchers and industry stakeholders in a flexible, open and creative space aimed at stimulating innovation in relevant areas.

Welcome

Welcome to the University of South Australia, and the beginning of a rewarding and inspiring journey of discovery.

Guaranteed entry

UniSA Preferred is a scheme that offers guaranteed entry into many University programs for domestic year 12 and TAFE and other registered training organisation (RTO) qualified students. It has been designed to reduce some of the stress you face when

applying to university and waiting on your offer.

With UniSA Preferred, many programs now offer you a guaranteed place if you have a certain year 12 score or a relevant TAFE/RTO diploma or higher. If your ATAR or TAFE/RTO award meets the UniSA Preferred qualification for that program, you have met any prerequisites, and you have listed the program as your first preference, you are in. It’s guaranteed.

Experiential Learning The School of Computer and Information Science is dedicated to creating graduates who are industry ready. Students are presented with a variety of opportunities to think creatively and experience aspects of the IT industry. Students use the tools and certification programs including SAP, CISCO, Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) that are currently utilised within the workplace. Experiential learning is also combined with other unique activities including Global Experience, student exchange, work placements and industry and community projects.

Customised degreesThe School of Computer and Information Science offers a selection of programs allowing our students to undertake specialised and advanced work in their field of interest. Courses are offered by academics who are active researchers and practitioners in their field. Their experience and expertise is directly integrated into all aspects of the academic environment.

Our IT degrees have been developed to meet the needs of industry and are accredited by the Australian Computer Society allowing graduates to practise anywhere in the world.

Common first yearAll of our undergraduate degrees contain a common first year of core courses. These courses lay the foundations and ready students for the specialisation of their choice. Students have the opportunity to change to an alternative specialisation without the loss of the courses they have already passed.

Industry Alliances ProgramThe school operates an Industry Alliance Program that has over 200 industry partners, including Fujitsu Australia, SA Water, Uniting Care Wesley Adelaide and many more, providing real-world industry experience through student projects and placements before graduation. PathwaysThe School of Computer and Information Science offers the most flexible entry pathways into our bachelor programs, whether you’re a mature aged student, secondary student or an international student. The School of Computer and Information Science also recognises

your previous tertiary level study by offering credit in a number of courses depending on the level of education you previously completed. This can be very important as it will reduce the length of your IT degree.

Your pathway to an Information Technology degree at the University of South Australia.

The University of South Australia now offers the widest range of flexible pathways to become an IT professional in Adelaide or abroad. These pathway options have been introduced to attract more people into IT careers to help meet significant industry growth, particularly in the fields of defence, mining and resources, health, and public enterprise.

Note: If enrolling in the three-year Bachelor of Information Technology degree, you can choose a specialisation in either Business Systems, Cloud Computing, Games and Entertainment, Networking and Security, Software Development, or Systems Administration and graduate with this major.

Associate Degree in Information Technology (IT)

Program overviewThis two-year program provides a solid grounding in information technology (IT), preparing you for further study, or an IT career within the software development and information services industries.

You will also acquire the necessary education to assume positions in small to medium enterprises where a broad range of IT skills are demanded. This program has a strong practical and industry focus and is especially suited to students who may not necessarily qualify for entry into a three or four-year degree program.

Our common first year, with most other programs in the School, will provide you with the flexibility to transfer into another IT program without any loss of courses completed.

What will I study?In first year, you are introduced to the essentials of IT and software systems, during which you acquire practical programming skills, learn how to problem solve, and create and use databases.

In the second year, you may select a specialisation in either networking, programming or network security and also complete an industry-based project. If you are a high-achieving final year student, or upon graduation, you may apply for entry into another IT degree program and receive credit for all equivalent courses in the program.

What does it take?The main role of an IT professional is to solve problems using computing technology. IT professionals are often required to document solutions and communicate with others, particularly those who may not be trained in computer and information science. This requires good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work well with others.

You should have an inquiring mind and a flexible, creative approach. Often the most obvious solution to a problem may not be the best one. IT professionals are required to collect all the facts – often through their own initiative – and analyse them accordingly.

Entry is available on the basis of successful completion of the ATN Test, a multiple choice test assessing aptitude to think scientifically, solve quantitative problems, critically analyse information and display interpersonal understanding.

Who will employ me?The demand for IT graduates is very high and there is currently a shortage of skills in this industry. This program prepares you for a career specialising in either networking, network security, or programming, particularly in small to medium business enterprises.

Professional accreditationThis program has been accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) for Associate Membership.

Additional notesMinors are undertaken in networking, network security, or programming. This program can also be taken online.

Bachelor of Business (Management of Information Technology)

Program overviewInformation systems are critical to any modern organisation. This program will enable you to develop and implement strategic information systems and business processes that align with organisational needs and priorities. You will learn how to plan and develop strategic IT solutions for business problems, and how to implement and manage information systems.

You will also develop skills in accounting, economics and general business while gaining a comprehensive understanding of how to apply IT to address contemporary business needs.

As a student of this program, you will have access to the new Innovation Studio and IT Development Studio. These new facilities will prepare you for a career in IT by combining real-life experience with the knowledge to succeed.

What will I study?Over the first two years, you will complete core business courses in economics, management, marketing, accounting, statistics and law to develop an awareness of business processes and functions. In addition, you will develop an understanding of the basics of IT, analysis, design and project management and undertake practice-based learning to develop organisational and communication skills.

The final year will enable you to explore the latest organisational IT issues and complete an industry-based project. The final year courses cover IT strategy and management, business transformation, business practice, business intelligence, and information security management.

What does it take?You will need to think logically and analytically and have sound technical and problem solving skills which are needed to manage and implement IT solutions. Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to apply a professional and ethical approach to your work are also important.

Who will employ me?Upon graduating, you will have a solid grounding in IT management, vital to the successful implementation of information systems strategy in any organisation. You may find employment in business and government as analysts, business consultants, information systems officers/managers, project officers/managers, or web design consultants.

‘I chose this University of South Australia program to enhance my career options and give me the flexibility to look at a range of career paths if I wish to.

The external study option is very important to me as I work part-time and have family commitments. I work at Primary Industries & Regions SA (PIRSA) as the Information and Communications technology (ICT) Configuration Manager, managing all ICT changes that are implemented and affect the organisation’s network and also the computer fleet of PIRSA. I attend lectures if needed, and find the revision lecture before exams is particularly useful.

Being able to download the tools needed for some subjects helps immensely and I get a lot of practical experience from my everyday employment. I find the facilities at the University are of a high standard and PC Barns are always tidy.’

Bachelor of Computing (Multimedia)

Program overviewWith the explosion of multimedia and the internet, there is huge demand for computer professionals specialising in the dynamic field of multimedia. This is a rewarding program which will lead to a fulfilling career in one of the fastest growing sectors of the information technology (IT) industry. This program will appeal to you if you have an artistic flair for creating original content for multimedia applications, as well as strong problem-solving skills. It features a unique and much sought after combination of computing (technical) and multimedia (practical and creative) streams in one program.

This program shares a common first year with most other programs in the School. This provides you with the flexibility to transfer into another IT program without any loss of courses completed should you decide to change the direction of your study.

As a student of this program, you will also have access to the new IT Innovation Studio and IT Development Studio. These new facilities will prepare you for a career in IT by combining real-life experience with the knowledge to succeed.

What will I study?In the IT component of the program you are introduced to the essentials of IT and software systems, gaining practical programming skills, learning how to determine requirements, and designing and developing software. There are courses on user interface design, Agile Development with NET, development of software for mobile phones and web engineering.

The multimedia component of the program covers foundation multimedia courses and you may then elect to specialise in animation or interactive multimedia. In the fourth year, you'll complete a major project which may be industry-based, or a multimedia specialisation, and take two of the specialist IT courses.

What does it take?As a content creator and IT professional, good written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work well in a team. It is vital that you can think creatively and logically, as well as being adaptable and committed to keeping up with evolving developments in IT and computing.

Who will employ me?The global demand for high quality and innovative games means that as a graduate of this program you could start as testers or developers in games development, multimedia and web-based companies. These roles will eventually lead to positions such as team leader, creative director or creative technologist.

‘I chose to study at the University of South Australia because this combination of programs wasn’t offered anywhere else, and I really wanted to complete this degree in particular because of its increased hands-on and proactive approach to learning in this craft.

I really enjoyed my final year project which gave me the creative freedom to create, set and plan an entire project based on a true craft within the media and advertising industry. As part of this final year project I was also placed into the industry with a real-life client. I strongly believe this was paramount to my career pathway, especially in such a competitive and demanding industry, because the more industry participation is made available to students, the better equipped you will be once you graduate.

By immersing myself in the industry during my degree as a freelance media designer and developer I was able to get a head start, and now my current career pathway is as a tutor at the University of South Australia under the School of Communication and Media Arts. I went on to complete a diploma in marketing at the University of South Australia to be able to start my own business using the strong foundation from my Bachelor of Information Technology. Now I run my own business with a team of 10 amazing individuals.’

The Bachelor of Information Technology provides you with the passport to a career in computing, software development and the information services industries. In this program you get the choice to select either two minors within the IT school or one IT minor as well as another minor in a different discipline within the University. What does it take?The main role of an IT professional is to solve issues using computing technology. You will also need an inquiring mind and a flexible, creative approach because often the most obvious solution to a problem may not be the best one. IT professionals are required to collect all the facts – often through their own initiative – and analyse them accordingly.

Program overviewCloud computing and virtualisation represent the latest paradigms for modelling IT services. The various cloud computing models and underlying architectures will allow you to experience a range of opportunities, both for organisations offering cloud services and for organisations interested in the uptake of those services. The potential benefits of cloud computing, including scalability and reduced cost, are driving the rapid development and uptake of the various cloud services. Analysts predict that this trend will continue to accelerate in the coming years.

What does it take?Cloud computing is an emerging service within the IT industry that is continuing to gain speed. ‘I have always wanted to learn how to program computers, being particularly interested in the graphic and animation side of the industry. I had just started a generic IT degree externally while living overseas when I found this program online. It was exactly what I was looking for as it teaches programming from the beginning, starting with the fundamentals, and teaching the more advanced languages as your knowledge grows. It was the best move I could have made.

I enjoy the hands-on practical sessions. The ability to work through tasks and projects helps to obtain a deeper understanding of the concepts that I am learning than would be possible with just reading alone.

Once I graduate, I would like to have a career as 3D Animation Artist for games, TV or film.

Having had experience with multiple programming languages and continuing to gain knowledge of the more advanced concepts is of great benefit. Also, realising what aspects of the degree that I really enjoy has given me the inspiration and motivation to obtain as much knowledge as is possible in those areas.’

Program overviewIf you're interested in software development and programming skills in a variety of languages, then you will find the Bachelor of Information Technology (Software Development) both challenging and rewarding. A key focus is on learning how large software systems are designed and created. You will be exposed to real-world applications and the latest research developments and technologies through student placements, internships and research projects with industry partners, providing greater employment prospects after graduation.

As a student of this program, you will also have access to the new IT Innovation Studio and IT Development Studio. These new facilities will prepare you for a career in information technology (IT) by combining real-life experience with the knowledge to succeed.

What will I study?In the common first year, you will study core concepts in IT to establish a solid foundation for more advanced coursework in subsequent years. The common first year also provides the flexibility for you to transfer into another IT program without any loss of courses completed.

In the final two years, you will study core topics leading to a major where you will gain a solid grounding in the design, implementation and testing of small and large software systems. In the final year, you will complete a project that puts into practice many of the skills you have acquired.

What does it take?To be a successful software developer and programmer you will need strong analytical skills and be a logical thinker with an interest in problem solving. IT professionals are often required to document solutions and communicate with others, particularly those

from a non-IT background. This means good written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work well with others. You will also need an inquiring mind and a flexible, creative approach because often the most obvious solution to a problem may not be the best one. IT professionals are required to collect all the facts – often through their own initiative – and analyse them accordingly.

Who will employ me?As a graduate of this program, the immediate prospects for employment are very good. Globally, many organisations are developing or redeveloping applications to drive value from their IT systems in public and private sectors.

Typically, many organisations acquire software frameworks which are adapted to suit their operations. This requires using different tools and techniques to exploit these frameworks so that the applications fit the nature of the business and its processes. Predominantly, this type of work is undertaken within organisations as the software needs to be aligned to the business and its end users.

The Systems Administration specialisation of the Bachelor of Information Technology (IT) will offer you a pathway into this and similar roles within the IT industry. Whether you are already working in IT or are looking for a new career, this program is tailor-made to deliver the necessary skills required to maintain and operate computer systems and networks.

This program is a balanced mix of computing fundamentals, networking skills, management principles, and specific system administration courses. All these skills are put to the test in either a major project or industry placement in your final year. This program provides a broad understanding of computing and information technology (IT) theory and practice, along with the specialist knowledge and skills required of a software engineer.

What will I study?This program covers core courses in computer science, software engineering and web technologies, as well as specialist courses in areas such as computer science, systems development, database and knowledge management, health informatics, networking and security.

During your final year, you will complete a year-long, industry-based project that presents a solution to a real-world IT problem. This will enable you to gain direct experience in solving an IT problem using software engineering principles and project management skills.

What does it take?As a software engineer, you will need to understand and apply software design skills, internationally recognised standards and the methods as well as techniques and tools that support them, while using good management practice. It is the task of the software engineer to draw together these separate areas of expertise and use them in developing quality software.

Who will employ me?The growth of large systems and their complexity means that the demand for software engineers is currently very high. Locally, the number of projects demanding competent software engineers is expected to increase in the defence sector. ‘I have always been good at programming as a hobby and started off at a young age, so software engineering seemed like a perfect fit for me.

I enjoy the opportunities to learn new programming languages and challenge my current knowledge and programming skills.

A highlight for me has been a trip to the World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco through a scholarship with the Apple University Consortium. The experience was quite spectacular and probably once-in-a-lifetime. I learnt a lot about the development possibilities within OSX and the iPhone. I was able to chat with actual Apple developers about how things work when developing for OSX and took part in practical sessions where you could try out new and upcoming tools with live support from Apple engineers.’

Program overviewThe program combines the University of South Australia’s Bachelor of Information Technology program with study at TAFE SA. This degree offers sound, practical education in information technology (IT), preparing graduates for a variety of roles in business, industry and government. The three-year program requires the majority of the first 1.5 years of study at TAFE SA at its Adelaide campus before completing the majority of the final 1.5 years at the University of South Australia. The program is a great blend of vocational training offered by TAFE SA and the academic-based education provided by the University, producing skilled and knowledgeable graduates that are highly appealing to IT employers. This program may be a great alternative if you don´t meet the entry requirements to the other IT programs at the University as it has been specifically designed as an alternative pathway program into a University of South

Australia IT bachelor degree program. As a student of this program, you will also have access to the new Innovation Studio and IT Development Studio. These new facilities will prepare you for a career in IT by combining real-life experience with the knowledge to succeed.

What will I study?In the first half of the program, you will focus on specific software packages, programming courses, webpage construction and network configuration at TAFE SA, as well as some theory-based courses through the University of South Australia. In the second half of the program, the focus changes from TAFE SA to the University of South Australia and you will complete courses in computing and IT, systems, databases and some management courses. The remainder of the syllabus is composed of University of South Australia electives. You will choose six electives in the final two years of the

Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical), Bachelor of Information Technology

Program overviewThis unique, double degree program provides you with an enhanced understanding of and ability to apply engineering principles alongside theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in information technology (IT).

As a graduate you will gain two separate degrees by studying only one year longer than it takes to gain the single Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) degree. You will also have the flexibility to select specialised engineering courses depending on your specific areas of interest.

This program has a strong practical and industry focus and you will have access to the latest developments in the areas of mechanical design, advanced manufacturing technologies, sustainable energy usage and management, as well as database and network technologies. With skills in both engineering and information

technology, you will be well prepared for a career in industries such as mechanical, manufacturing, defence, building and mechanical services, information services, computing and software development.

As a student of this program, you will also have access to the new Engineering Mechatronics Lab and existing, impressive facilities to help you gain valuable practice throughout your studies.

What will I study?In the first year you will study eight core engineering courses along with all engineering students including Engineering Design and Innovation, Mathematical Methods for Engineers 1 and 2, Mechanics and Physics, Computer Techniques, Sustainable Engineering Practice and Electrical and Energy Systems. These courses provide a practice-centred foundation to engineering that exposes you to the

breadth of cross-disciplinary studies as well as how engineering is applied in industry. You will undertake a number of hands-on engineering projects including participation in the Engineers Without Borders Challenge.

This program has been designed to provide complementary education in computer and information science and mechanical engineering. The engineering studies over the five years of the program focus on engineering concepts, computing, problem solving and communication. This is studied in conjunction with advanced studies in mechanical and manufacturing engineering through areas such as machine design, fluid mechanics, manufacturing processes, sustainable design and advanced composites. Specialist final-year courses are also offered in advanced manufacturing, sustainable systems, applied mechatronics and nanotechnology.

The IT program complements the engineering component of the degree with studies in computer system architecture, database technology, networking and internet technology and object oriented system development, which are very relevant to, and widely applied in, modern engineering professions. During final year, you will complete a research or industry-based engineering project, enabling you to apply your acquired skills in a professional environment.

As a student in this program you will also undertake 12 weeks of compulsory industrial experience during your study. This experience is highly regarded by prospective employers. You will have the opportunity to apply and integrate the knowledge and skills you have gained during your program in an industry setting. Industry experience also helps you determine your career pathway enabling you to experience particular industry sectors prior to graduation.

Program overviewThis program has been specifically designed for you if you are a high-achieving student, who wishes to study computer science at an advanced level and has an eye on a future position in cutting-edge research and development in academia, research institutions or the IT industry. In particular, this program will suit you if you are passionate about computing and applying technology to solve problems.

You will be personally mentored by expert researchers through a combination of advanced tutorials, practicals, laboratory placements and a year-long research thesis.

As a student of this program, you will also have access to the new IT Innovation Studio and IT Development Studio. These new facilities will prepare you for a career in IT by combining real-life experience with the knowledge to succeed.

What will I study?This four-year Honours program consists of common core courses in IT, as well as advanced computer and information science topics run by leading researchers. During the program you will complete a placement within one of the School's Advanced Computing Research Centre laboratories.

In your final year, you will also complete a thesis that contributes to your existing computer science knowledge, enabling you to apply your skills in a professional setting and gain additional insight into doctoral research. ‘I think one of the advantages of doing a degree within a University that has a large computer science school is the variety degrees to choose from. It’s allowed me to pinpoint areas that I’m interested in and would like to pursue in the future.

This degree allows for quite a bit of customisation in the fourth year. If you want to do maths, you can, but you can also choose networking courses, computer graphics, programming, information security and databases. I personally picked courses with a lot of programming in them, because that’s what I enjoy.

Many people have misconceptions about computer science – they think it’s incredibly difficult and you have to be fantastic at maths. It’s not like that. I think you just have to be interested in the area, you’ll always succeed so long as the interest is there.

I enjoyed being able to undertake research placements, including one within the Security Lab in UniSA and the other in the Wearable Computer Lab at the University of South Australia.’

WHAT WILL YOU STUDY?

Associate degreeAn award for completing a two-year (or part-time equivalent) tertiary program.

Foundation Studies A free, one year program with no qualifications required for entry. This program assists students to develop the skills required for successful university-level study. Upon successful completion, students can apply for entry into a degree at the University of South Australia or to enter the second year of a UniSA College diploma program.

Diploma UniSA College offers two diplomas as alternative entry to University: the Diploma of Arts is a two year program designed to provide guaranteed entry into the second year of a social sciences or communication and media degree at the University of South Australia; the Diploma of Science and Technology is a two year program which provides guaranteed entry into the second year of a University of South Australia degree in life sciences, environmental science, physical science, health and exercise science, nursing or biomedical science.

Bachelor degree A program of three or more years duration (or part-time equivalent). Bachelor degree programs provide the relevant qualifications for many professions.

HonoursAn additional year of study in a Bachelor degree during which students specialise in a chosen area of study. In some cases, Honours study can actually be

done as part of the degree.

Graduate Certificate An award for completing a postgraduate program of at least six months in duration (or part-time equivalent).

Graduate Diploma An award for completing a postgraduate program of at least one year in duration (or part-time equivalent).

Master degree A postgraduate degree undertaken after completion of a Bachelor degree (normally with Honours) which focuses on one area of specialisation.

PhD Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs normally extend over three years (or part-time equivalent) and involve significant research work.

HOW DOES YOUR PROGRAM WORK? Major A set of related courses which comprises 36 units of study within a Bachelor degree.

Sub-majorA set of related courses which comprises between 19 and 35 units of study within a Bachelor degree.

Minor A set of related courses which comprises up to 18 units of study within a Bachelor degree.

Special Entry (STAT) Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is an alternative entry for people who do not have any oter qualifications for admission to university.

ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) A ranking of all students who have completed SACE in a particular year. The minimum ATAR required for the previous year is often a guide to how well you will need to perform to gain entry into a particular program. ATARs can vary from year to year and should be used as a guide only.

This project is the only one of its type in Australia and more than 250 organisations have participated worldwide, resulting in approximately 1000 completed projects in the areas of engineering, computer science, mathematics, and physics and multidisciplinary areas.

The Bachelor of Quantitative FinanceThe Bachelor of Quantitative Finance is unique in South Australia due to its structured combination of mathematics and statistics with a focus on economics, finance and insurance applications. The quantitative finance training provided is more advanced than that typically offered by business schools. Graduates enter the workforce with the added advantage of much needed advanced quantitative and analytical skills that come from studying mathematics and statistics, coupled with a good understanding of financial markets. Moreover, through the inclusion of appropriate general problem-solving skills, students are well equipped to work as professional mathematicians and/or statisticians in any area where mathematics and statistics are used.

In your final year, you have the option of specialising in one of three areas: Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or Optimisation, and within each specialisation you have a number of elective courses to choose from. In the final year of the program students taking the Applied Mathematics specialisation are selected on merit to be engaged in the Mathematics Clinic, where one-third of the year involves working on a major project with industry.

The Mathematics Clinic was introduced in 2004 and has since been involved in collaborations with Woolworths Supermarkets, BHP-Billiton and the Electricity Supply Industry Planning Council. Involvement in the Clinic can open up employment opportunities for graduates and make them more aware of the potential applications of mathematics in business and industry.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics has a collaborative relationship with the University of

Twente in The Netherlands. Over the past 10 years, several of our final-year students have studied across institutions and all have found their experiences to be both educationally enriching and culturally broadening.

Whatdoesittake?You should have a pass qualification in Stage 2 Mathematical Studies (or equivalent) and a competitive Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics is also recommended. Above all we are seeking those who have ability, and a genuine interest in learning more about mathematics.

Our program is designed to nurture and develop your skills and interests. Successful completion of the Honours program also provides you with the opportunity to advance to postgraduate study. Testimony to this program and its predecessors is that approximately half of our current group of postgraduate research (PhD) students are graduates from these programs.

Whowillemployme?Specific areas for graduate employment include the finance and banking sectors financial organisations, insurance and investment companies, environmental modelling and education. Employment opportunities for you as a mathematics graduate in this sector are excellent. Other employment opportunities exist within the defence sector, including organisations such as the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), BAE Systems, Tenix and Australian Submarine Corporation; and research-based organisations such as the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organisation (CSIRO) with whom we have a strong working relationship, and the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI).

Alternatively, you may find employment in the mining and oil sector with companies such as BHP Billiton; or the state and federal public service sectors, including health (statisticians), agriculture (mathematical modelling and statistics) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

ProgramoverviewWhen you graduate from this program, you may be engaged in any number of activities including mathematical modelling, data collection and analysis, numerical analysis and the implementation of computer driven solutions, each with their own diverse range of employment opportunities. The analytical and problem-solving skills you develop in this program are highly valued by prospective employers.

ProgramoverviewHigh-level mathematics and statistics skills are increasingly in demand by the banking, insurance, investment and other finance sectors, providing many career opportunities for graduates of quantitative finance programs.

Bachelor of Quantitative Finance is a tailored program that will provide you with sound professional training in mathematics and statistics, with an added focus on finance and insurance applications. The program offers a range of specialised finance and actuarial studies courses and you will receive a high level of individual attention. The inclusion of appropriate analytical and problem-solving skills will allow you to pursue a career not just in the finance sector, but in many other areas where mathematics and statistics are used. You may have the opportunity to study abroad through the International Student Exchange program to gain international experience by completing

WhatwillIstudy?Throughout this three-year program, you will develop expert skills in mathematics and statistics, which you will then progressively apply to specialised areas of quantitative finance and actuarial science. ‘At school I was good at and enjoyed maths. I looked for a program that combined maths with something I could relate to, like finance. Quantitative Finance was the perfect solution as it shows how applicable maths is to real-life financial situations.

This degree provides the perfect balance between theory and practical components and many assignments that I have undertaken have involved solving real industry questions. I have also completed a vocational work placement where I used everything that I have learned in my first two years of university. Small classes mean a lot of attention and I am fortunate to be a Hypatia Scholarship recipient, which includes financial support and a study office at the University of South Australia.

ProgramoverviewScience is concerned with the systematic study of the nature and behaviour of the physical universe by observation, experiment and measurement. It enables us to model the universe and to make predictions and informed decisions.

This program provides you with a broad science education through a combination of majors and minors from a variety of science disciplines. It is also possible to choose one minor from any discipline area in which a minor is offered by the University. As a graduate of this program you will have an understanding of the fundamental concepts of the sciences. The emphasis on laboratory and fieldwork is designed to give you the necessary skills to apply your knowledge in your future career.

WhatwillIstudy?The Bachelor of Science is one of the most flexible programs to study at the University of South Australia. Almost the entire program is made up of courses of your chosen major and minors. You can choose your major from the following areas of study:

» Applied Physics allows you to pursue in-depth studies in the areas of advanced materials, computational physics and medical health physics.

» Biology includes studies into plant and animal biology, cell biology, physiology, environmental biology, biochemistry and introductory biotechnology.

» Chemistry offers in-depth studies in both physical and inorganic chemistry.

» Computer Science combines core studies in computer science, information systems, software engineering and internet technology.

» Environmental Systems provides a broad understanding of environmental sciences

and policy, including the contemporary concepts of ecosystem management and sustainable development that link natural and social systems. You will receive a solid foundation in natural sciences and field research techniques, while engaging in active, project-based learning opportunities.

» Geospatial information systems (GIS) are computerised systems that store and analyse spatial or geographic data. Data stored by coordinates in 2D, 3D or 4D space are related to relational databases, which can be used to perform spatial queries and analyses.

» Geoscience is the study of the earth and its resources. This stream introduces the basic concepts of geology and develops these concepts with emphasis on science applications and the practice of geoscience in environmental management and civil engineering.

» Mathematics provides core studies in applied mathematics, statistics and optimisation.

» Psychology can be taken as a minor or sub-major. After studies in basic psychology, you may select from additional topics for more advanced study.

Whatdoesittake?You should have an inquiring mind and a keen interest in science. Some knowledge and skills in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, or related disciplines are also necessary, depending on the stream in which you wish to specialise.

In addition, you must possess a variety of personal skills and the qualities to succeed in your chosen profession. Scientists in any discipline need well-developed interpersonal abilities as well as skills in verbal and written communication, problem solving, and creative thinking and the ability to work collaboratively in teams.

‘Whichever science you are interested in, the Bachelor of Science provides the opportunity for you to pursue it as a career. The overall experience is invaluable and designed to allow further research or study in any area of the degree.

All classes have a practical component helping to reinforce the theory presented in the lectures and providing a hands-on learning aspect. I particularly enjoyed the practical sessions in invertebrate and vertebrate biology. This covered dissections, anatomical explorations, phylum collections and animal skull preparation. The third-year project enables additional insight into the field of research.

I hope to gain a position, initially with the state police, and then federal, working with the crime scene investigators in forensics.’

Bachelor of Science (Advanced Materials)

ProgramoverviewThe Bachelor of Science (Advanced Materials) is a multidisciplinary science program focused on priority areas for South Australia, namely the mining, water, energy and health sectors. There are employment prospects locally, nationally and internationally and the program not only provides opportunities for you to specialise in an area of interest but also to network with prospective employers.

Advanced materials are all around us.They exist as carbon fibres which are stronger than steel, coatings on glasses that darken when out in the sun; huge bandwidth optical fibre communication systems that provide all modern media direct to our homes; lasers for eye surgery; materials for long life batteries, next generation solar cells to capture more of the solar spectrum; scratch-resistant and protective coatings on mirrors and more importantly,

your iPad or iPod; and nanoparticles for medical imaging, targeted radiation therapy and in the future, drug delivery.

Advanced materials science separates precious metals in minerals processing, to find materials and coatings for implants that are not rejected by the human body, to find solutions to secure fresh water supply and decontaminate soil resources, and to devise systems to store large-scale renewable energy for later use.

As a student of the Bachelor of Science (Advanced Materials) degree you will work in the new Materials and Minerals Science and Engineering Hub at our vibrant Mawson Lakes campus. The centrepiece of the Hub is a $50 million research and teaching building with state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching spaces, which opened in early 2012. The new facilities complement those in our recently-opened Mawson Institute and Environmental Science

Buildings, and we are host to the South Australian node of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Fabrication facility.

WhatwillIstudy?In first year you will be introduced to core studies in chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics with an emphasis on materials, and exposed to the potential employment available in advanced materials through a research project and participation in a student conference.

In second year, core courses include topics in scientific data analysis, materials analysis techniques and instrumentation. You can choose a major from the following areas of study:

• Minerals covers the fundamental science underpinning the characterisation, processing and utilisation of mineral resources (ores, minerals and metals), which is central to the operations of the minerals and materials industry.

• Nanomaterials explores the nano world; materials with features less than a micron (a millionth of a metre) in size. The courses provide an understanding of the nanomaterial properties that enable scientists to design new classes of advanced materials. Nanoscience has far-reaching implications for engineering, medicine, physics, biology, energy production and computing.

• OpticalMaterials not only looks at lenses, mirrors and coatings, but optical systems such as periscopes on submarines, lasers for eye surgery, microscopes, optical fibre communication systems, lighting solutions, solar cells, surveillance and electro-optic systems.

ProgramoverviewThe Bachelor of Science (Honours) program provides you with an opportunity for advanced study and introductory research experience in the field of nanomaterials and biomaterials. This program is for you if you received high achievements throughout your undergraduate program. It will prepare you for postgraduate research or for employment as a professional scientist. If accepted into this program, you may apply for scholarships offered by the Ian Wark Research Institute.

WhatwillIstudy?This Honours program consists of several core courses in research project preparation which will provide you with the skills and knowledge to conduct effective research projects. You are required to complete an advanced year-long project in the discipline of nano and bio materials.

Those interested in studying Honours in other areas of science should consider one of the

programs in applied physics, mathematics or statistics, computer science, biology or chemistry, biotechnology or bimolecular chemistry, environmental systems, environmental remediation, geoscience or geospatial information systems.

Whatdoesittake? You will need knowledge and skills in chemistry or physics, and in related disciplines. In addition, you must possess a variety of personal skills and qualities to succeed in your chosen profession. of SACE at Stage 2 of which 60 must be Tertiary Admission subjects (TAS) and the other 20 either TAS, Recognised Studies or a mix of the two;

overseas qualifications that the University considers equivalent to the SACE;

» Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma;

» Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above;

AssociatedegreeAn award for completing a two-year (or part-time equivalent) tertiary program.

FoundationStudies A free, one year program with no qualifications required for entry. This program assists students to develop the skills required for successful university-level study. Upon successful completion, students can apply for entry into a degree at the University of South Australia or to enter the second year of a UniSA College diploma program.

Diploma UniSA College offers two diplomas as alternative entry to University: the Diploma of Arts is a two year program designed to provide guaranteed entry into the second year of a social sciences or communication and media degree at the University of South Australia; the Diploma of Science and Technology is a two year program which provides guaranteed entry into the second year of a University of South Australia degree in life sciences, environmental science, physical science, health and exercise science, nursing or biomedical science.

BachelordegreeA program of three or more years duration (or part-time equivalent). Bachelor degree programs provide the relevant qualifications for many professions.

HonoursAn additional year of study in a Bachelor degree during which students specialise in a chosen area of study. In some cases, Honours study can actually be

done as part of the degree.

GraduateCertificateAn award for completing a postgraduate program of at least six months in duration (or part-time equivalent).

GraduateDiplomaAn award for completing a postgraduate program of at least one year in duration (or part-time equivalent).
