Congratulations to all the appointed prefects and elected student council members. We are confident that all of them will discharge their responsibilities with full commitment and dedication under the supervision of their teachers. In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn festival, the Year 1, Year 2 and the Pre-School students had a great time celebrating the festival: showing off their beautiful lanterns, listening to the story on the origin and legends of this festival and getting to taste the various types of moon cakes. Another event, Learning Malaysian History, was timely and meaningful. An account on the events leading to the formation of Malaysia was presented, providing the relevant background knowledge of Malaysian history to the students as part of the events in celebrating Malaysia Day. A “Meet and Greet” session was organised for parents to meet the tutors and subject teachers. It was aimed at giving feedback to parents concerning their children’s progress in adapting themselves to a new environment in a new academic year. We hope all students, especially the newly enrolled students, have a great time learning in a safe, conducive and enjoyable environment. The Parent Support Group (PSG) has conducted its first meeting and the members have elected their representatives for the new academic year. As for the 20014/2015 session the PSG has performed their role well by giving their full support and contribution to the school activities. We look forward to another productive year of cooperation and participation from the PSG 2015/2016. We believe their continued active participation in the various school events will bring more benefits to the students.

MID AUTUMN FESTIVAL

The school celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival on 23 September 2015. The event started with a presentation on the origin and legends of the festival by Barry Tay (Year 10A) and Chin Ze Xin (Year 10S). Lower primary students took part in a parade around the school compound, captivating everyone with their beautiful traditional costumes and colourful lanterns. A treat of moon cakes and pomeloes capped the celebration at the end of the day. The bright, smiling faces of the children said it all – everyone had a wonderful time!

MEET & GREET

A “Meet and Greet” session was organized on 19 September 2015 for parents to have an opportunity to meet their children’s tutors. This session enabled parents to obtain first hand feedback from the tutors as to how their children were coping with their studies and their social development within and outside the classroom. We believe all our students will adapt themselves eventually, and will happily adjust to the academic term under the guidance of the teachers in school and the supervision of the parents at home.

PARENT SUPPORT GROUP (PSG) ELECTION OF NEW COMMITTEE FOR 2015-2016 Established since January 2015, the formation of the Second PSG Committee for the year 2015-2016 was

held on 19 September from 10.30 am to 12 pm at the presentation room. It was chaired by the Principal, Mr

Lui. The CEO, Datin Low, was also present.

The majority of the parents from the Early Year to Year 11 were present on that day for the election of each

year group representative. The spirit of goodwill and support among all the parents was a positive start to

a season of collaboration between the parents and the school.

STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTION

Another exercise in democracy has again taken place at Austin Heights International School with the recent

election of the President and Vice-President of the Student Council recently.

The event proceeded in an orderly fashion with the Council members marching into the school hall. The

voice of the student body has again been heard ringing throughout the hall of the school campus. This voice

is an integral part of the decision making process within the school and remains a conduit through which

the hopes, dreams and aspirations of Austin Heights International School students regarding their school

can be delivered to the people in management who make the final decisions.

Our candidates for this year’s election were chosen from the current Year 11 batch of students. They all

came prepared and delivered rousing campaign speeches on this day at the school hall. The speeches

served a dual purpose of igniting the interest of the voters, not just in their content, but also in the process

of election campaigning and inspiring a future generation of potential politicians to grasp the mantle of power

to effect change into the future.

The President and Vice President will be aided and supported by a team of Student Council members

throughout the year. The weight of expectation rests upon their shoulders to fulfil the promises which they

brought to their school on that memorable day when they were elected to the Student Council. The eyes of

the school are upon you all.

Mr Padraig Thomas Muldoon

INTERNATIONAL PRIMARY CURRICULUM – ENTRY POINT

Year 1 Theme: Seeing the Light (Light & Dark)

For Term 1A, the students in Year 1 learned about where light comes from, understand that light is

necessary for the growth of plants and explored the Earth’s relationship with the Sun.

That is why for their Entry Point Project the children were taught how to make colourful Paper Lanterns and

even created their own ‘Mr. Sun’.

The students also learn that the sun is the brightest object in the sky and in our universe. It is a huge ball of

very hot gases that gives the Earth heat and light. They learn that without heat and light, there would be no

life on the Earth.
