Circle of Life from The Lion King – Elton John & Tim Rice As 2019 ebbs and flows towards December, one involuntarily looks back at the year. I believe every one of us had moments that we will never forget, hopefully, mostly for these joyous moments in the circle of life. On a personal note, my brother-in-law, Dr Naude Keyter passed away earlier this month – he was a larger than life type of character and after a motorbike accident almost five years ago never fully recovered. He touched the lives of many of his patients and lived life to its fullest. This again made me realise how unpredictable life is and that one must cherish the time one has with friends and loved ones. In our country we also had highlights and blackouts. One of the definitive moments we will remember for a long time was the victory and triumphant celebrations of the Springbok rugby side after winning the World Cup. They brought hope back to our country and never were the following words of Nelson Mandela truer: Sport has the power to change the world, it has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Midstream College also had a blessed year and among the many victories were enough defeats to keep us humble. The learners of the College, over the last 13 years, have been an integral part of the growth and success of the College. I would like to salute every one of you for your big or small contribution that transformed the College into a better place for everyone. I would also like to salute the teachers for their dedication towards teaching and education. They have made a difference in the lives of many learners in 2019, while conquering many an academic, sport, cultural and personal battle. You have created a phenomenal school where most learners can thrive and be themselves. In the words of the Olympic motto: Citius, Altius, Fortius (Swifter, Higher, Stronger), you have inspired learners to embrace the Midstream spirit and perform to the best of their abilities. Without loyal and supportive parents none of this would have been possible. Thank you for being there for your children, the College and our community. Behind every success of 2019 there was a learner supported by a parent and teacher. Hence, to all our learners, teachers and parents: Thank you; dankie; ngiyabonga; ke a leboga; enkosi.
