Our School Link ProgrammesThe programmes on offer are based on the growing skills requirements and employment and further training needs of the Dumfries and Galloway Regional economy, The Programmes offer learning and training opportunities focused on life skills and vocational skills at National 4 level, right through to more academic as well as vocational study at level 7 (equivalent to Advanced Higher or first year at University). The various programmes on offer are all very inclusive and we believe that they afford young people the opportunity to further enhance and shape their bright futures through this partnership between schools and the College.

Whilst still at school, you can develop qualifications, and experience college life through our School College partnership and achieve a worthwhile, recognised qualification that will progress career and further study opportunities.

An allocation of option places are given to each school, normally around the end of March with confirmation of acceptance/decline of places to be with the schools liaison officer by close of Easter break.

What We Expect From You

Personal Protective Equipment:

Some courses will require students to wear protective clothing as they may be working, whilst supervised, with specialist machinery or other potentially dangerous materials. In these cases, protective clothing and any other necessary equipment will be issued to students. Once issued the clothing and/or equipment becomes the responsibility of the student. Students will be unable to participate in practical course work without the required safety equipment.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate an ability to work at SCQF 4.

Introduction

The NPA is designed as a taster course and the emphasis is on developing your own personal qualities and skills for dealing with customers who wish to participate in activity tourism pursuits.

Course Content

It has been designed to be a fun and engaging course which will allow you to explore the exciting area of activity tourism, from activity based adventure holidays involving climbing, horse riding and mountaineering, to less physical, but still activity focused breaks of wildlife watching, food trails or local heritage trails. Through exploring a range of enterprises and the activities they provide you will learn about the different skills and experience that are necessary for employment in the sector. Note that the course will not involve you participating in the sports/activities but is a study of the different types of activity tourist pursuits which could be categorised as:

• Gentle: art, music, cookery, yoga, bird watching and lake fishing

• Moderate: low level walking, rambling, archery, flat water canoeing, snorkelling and paint-balling

• Adrenaline: rock climbing, mountain biking, abseiling, sailing, mountaineering, scuba diving, and skiing

Introduction

The AAT (Advanced Accounting Technician) Foundation Diploma in Accounting and Business is a brand new and up to date qualification specifically designed for 16-19 year olds. If you are considering working and progressing a career in an accounting/finance role, then this is the ideal course. The course has been designed by AAT who are the industry leaders for accounting qualifications with AAT qualifications equipping you with the expertise and confidence to succeed. It delivers a solid foundation in finance administration - covering areas such as double entry bookkeeping and basic costing principles, alongside complementary business communications and personal skills.

The course contains an introduction to financial recording keeping and financial recording software (SAGE) that would be useful to progress a career in this field or to help provide a foundation for anyone wishing to seek their career in a business environment or in self-employment.

Introduction

This is a broad, general qualification giving learners scope to develop and progress in a variety of ways within organisations of all sizes, including ones which learners may set up themselves.

The HNC builds on developing suitable competencies and knowledge to enhance an administrative, commercial or managerial career. In addition, other skills that employers value such as: customer handling skills, meeting deadlines, attention to detail, personal target setting, enterprise and effectively dealing with clients, will also permeate throughout the subjects delivered.

If you wish to study for the HNC and progress to HND or university with advanced standing, then attendance of 2½ days is required so you can study 15 credits in total.

The programme is also ideal for learners who want to pursue a career in business but do not wish to commit themselves initially to a particular specialist area or to those who want to start their own business and require a broad grounding in business topics.

Successful completion of the 15 credits at HNC level will allow direct entry into HND Business. Holders of an HNC may gain entry to first or second year at university depending on which university and the course concerned. The Chartered Institute of Bankers for Scotland will accept holders of the HNC Business directly into their higher level qualification. This is now called Chartered Banker and leads to MCIBS (Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland).8

attained the skills, knowledge and understanding

required by Literacy (National 3) or equivalent

qualifications and/or experience, as this will help

prepare them for any written work undertaken.

Introduction

The main purpose of the National 4 in Care Course is to enable you to understand why people use care services, and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to work in care practice in settings such as health care, social care and childcare. You will develop knowledge, understanding and skills to help you to understand the needs of individuals in a variety of care settings and use these to support them with their health and well being.

You will engage in a range of tasks and learning

that will enable you to develop an understanding

of individuals and society. By doing this you will

recognise that each individual has a unique blend

of abilities and needs, and will understand, the

qualities and skills required to sustain different types

of relationships. You will develop an understanding

of the value base required in the care profession

and have the opportunity to understand and explain

influences on human development and behaviour.

You will also gain an understanding of the social, physical, emotional, cognitive and cultural needs of people who use care services. This knowledge and these skills will be relevant for future experience in learning, life and work.

To achieve the award of National 4 Care you need to

pass four units, which are as follows:

• Care: Values and Principles In this Unit, you will

investigate a range of health and social care

services available to meet the needs of people

requiring care. You will explore the skills, qualities,

values and principles required by care workers and

will develop an understanding of what it means to

work as a professional in the care sector.

• Care: Human Development and Behaviour In

this Unit, you will apply their knowledge and

understanding of human development and

behaviour to individuals using care services.

You will develop an understanding of factors

influencing human development and behaviour,

and will be able to explain how a care worker can

use psychological concepts to understand the

behaviour of individuals using care services.

• Care: Social Influences In this Unit, you will

describe the ways in which social influences can

impact on people, and the relevance this has for

care practice. You will use sociological concepts

to describe social influences and the impact these

might have on people’s life chances. You will also

describe actions taken in society to improve the

life chances of individuals using care services.

• Added Value Unit: Care: Investigating Services

Assignment (National 4) In this Unit, you will

have the opportunity to investigate the needs

of individuals requiring care and the services

available to meet those needs. You will draw on

and apply skills and knowledge learned throughout

the Course.

Minimum of 3 Standard Grades at 4 or above (or equivalent) or 3 National 4 awards, one of which should be English or successful completion of a National 4 Care programme. Applications from adult learners where experience and accreditation of prior learning will be considered. There will be a requirement to become a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG Scheme).

Introduction

All applicants will have a 1-1 discussion with a member of College staff to determine their suitability for the programme. All applicants must show motivation and possess appropriate abilities and skills to attend the programme they have chosen. All learners on a programme who wish to continue on to a further programme must be able to obtain a positive progressing learner reference.

All applicants must come to this session prepared to discuss the following topic:

Introduction

The NPA Health and Social Care Promoting Reablement equips practitioners to develop a range of skills very much required in the delivery of a range of care services across different service users. Very sought after in the sector this award also supports further study at College including articulation onto Social care and Nursing programmes as well as Access to Higher Education. The course is a true foundation for you to embed key employability values and provides you with a practical skill set highly valued by employers.

Course Content

Reablement is a term which supports individuals with poor physical or mental health to help them accommodate their illness by learning or relearning the skills necessary for daily living. This approach is being embedded into the culture of delivering an outcomes based service to enable individuals to do as much as they can for themselves to maximise their independence and remain in their home. This covers the fundamental principles of health and social care which ensures that candidates are appropriately equipped to work in a variety of

settings. A basic knowledge of biology would be an advantage.

Values & Principles in Care, Social Influences in Care, Human Development & Behaviour, Caring for People with Dementia, Human Body, Ensure Your Own Actions Support the Care, Protection and Well-Being of Individual as well as Reablement Management : practical skills

As part of the course you may also get an exciting opportunity to attend the Skills Academy at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. On these days you will take part in discussion, practical workshops, and care employability skills development led by subject specialists. These will be innovative participatory sessions which may help inform your career decisions in Health and Social Care.


Supports a range of employability opportunities as well as access to further or possible Higher education including HNC Social Services. This award also forms part of entry into the Health Skills Academy with Queen Margaret University. Pupils completing this are entitled to a guarantedd interview with Queen Margaret University

Introduction

The National Progression Award in Computer Networks and Systems at SCQF level 5 will introduce you to the fundamental knowledge and skills required to make effective use of computer hardware, software and networks. You must have a proven computing ability and want to gain the knowledge and technical skills to install and maintain computer hardware, software and basic simple networks.

The delivery will be largely through practical activities, supported by tutor demonstration and presentations in the College’s e-Skills lab. Basic information and theory will be covered but you will also develop independence in your learning through exercises which will require information to be researched independently which will then be assessed for suitability and relevance.

The assessment for these units are largely composed of practical assignments and the evidence for achievement will be a logbook maintained by you along with stored and printed elements of your work with corresponding checklist(s) completed by your lecturer. Your knowledge and understanding will also be tested by written and/or oral recorded evidence.

The testing of knowledge and understanding for some topics will be through computer-based assessment (e-assessment) which will provide you with immediate return of your result.

National Progression Award: Web Design Fundamentals Attendance: 1/2 day

You should be studying other National 5 awards and have already achieved at least two National 4 awards and the SQA IT Core Skill at National 4.

Introduction

The NPA Web Design Fundamentals course introduces you to the fundamental knowledge and skills required in modern web design. You must have a proven computing and creative ability and want to gain knowledge and understanding of key technical and design issues in developing websites, including design principles, copyright law and technical standards. You will also gain practical skills in a range of software applications used in the development of websites, including graphics packages, web authoring tools and animation software.

You will be involved mainly in practical activities, including interviewing clients, designing website layouts, constructing web pages, developing animations and interactive media, and conducting evaluations of completed work.

Assessment is mainly in the form of practical assignments in designing, developing and testing websites. You will also complete some written assessments, mostly relating to the design and testing of a website, and one formal written assessment conducted under closed-book conditions.

The course will be delivered in the College’s Apple MAC design studios and you will use the latest Adobe web development and design software.

Course Content

There are three units that comprise this National Progression Award and you must successfully complete all of the units to Pass.

The three units are:

2 Highers at C or above in appropriate academic/science subjects and all applicants should also have National 5/Int 2 Mathematics at grade C or above. All applicants will be invited for advice session/interview

Introduction

This programme is a software design and systems oriented computing course which has been developed and introduced to reflect contemporary technologies and methodologies. The award introduces traditional underpinning concepts of problem solving whilst developing these within a number of technological advancements including: growth of Web 2.0 technologies, increase in social media, increase in mobile technology and the increase in focus on software development.

This award aims to prepare you for employment in an IT related post at trainee level, to prepare you for further study or to develop an employee’s IT skills to improve their effectiveness in the workplace.

Course Content

Study will include 15 Higher National credits such as:

One Computing graded unit exam is also included in the programme. Other credits that may be included in

Completion of the full course may lead to progression to HND Computer Science and then the following year to a relevant degree programme offered by a number of universities. The HNC can also be used as a qualification to gain direct entry into the second year of a related BSc Computing degree course at university.

Skills for Work:Construction Crafts Attendance: This programme requires 3 hours of direct contact and additional study.



Entry Requirements

National 4 Skills for Work: Construction Crafts is an introductory qualification which develops the skills, knowledge and attitudes, needed to gain sustainable employment in the construction industry. It is especially suitable for learners with an aptitude for, and an interest in, practical craft level work. Learners should be able to work at National 4 or above.

Introduction

If you are interested in a career in the construction industry or learning new transferable skills then this is the course for you, this is an exciting opportunity to take that first step to a career that is both satisfying and rewarding.

The Course provides an insight into several important construction trades (bricklaying, decorative painting, carpentry and joinery, and plumbing) and covers a variety of skills in trades-specific Units — helping learners to make informed choices regarding a career in construction. Learners will also develop skills and attitudes that enhance employability, not just for the construction industry, but employment generally (e.g setting goals, reflecting, and learning from experience).

Introduction

For over three decades, the British Science Association’s CREST Awards have been providing successful Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) enrichment activities for young people. It is used by around a third of all UK secondary schools each year and last year, over 33,000 students achieved a CREST Award.Your school is working with Dumfries & Galloway College to offer you to the CREST award this year at your school.Bronze entries can be for teams or individual students. Students working on team projects can either each fill in a CREST Bronze Award student workbook or produce a joint team report. If submitting a joint team report each team member should complete an individual Bronze Award student profile.

Course Content Students need to:

• Develop a project using their own ideas, taking decisions about how to progress through it

• Complete a minimum of 10 hours of project work

• Write about their findings and evaluate their project in their workbook.

Sustainable Building Design Attendance: This programme requires 3 hours of direct contact and additional study.

Prior achievement of the CREST bronze award would be advantageous. Ideally pupils who are likely to be working towards Nat 5 maths in S4.

Introduction

The Sustainable Building Design award offers a new innovative project based approach that is both challenging and rewarding. The award is designed as an introductory course for learners wishing to study Sustainable Building Design in a vocational context.

The purpose of the course is to develop the general skills, technical knowledge and understanding and employability skills needed within the sector. Learners will develop a sustainable building project design and, through complementary workshops have face to face engagement with industry professionals.

The knowledge, understanding and skills gained by studying at this level are popular and effective because they encourage learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace. When taken as part of a balanced curriculum, there is a clear progression route to SCQF level 5 study.

There are many opportunities for cross curricular learning, to gain knowledge and technical skills which would be needed to embark on an exciting career in the Construction and Built Environment sector of industry.

This provides qualification routes that will raise achievement in literacy, numeracy and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects as well as other aspects of the wider curriculum such as Citizenship and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education.

Art & Design: Design Activity & Expressive Activity Attendance: 1/2 a day



Entry RequirementsA previous creative design course or equivalent qualifications and/or experience prior to starting this course. Experience and interest in media.

Introduction

This course is for Learners who are interested in creativity, visual communication and digital media. This might consist of animation, advertising and/or other media and also how to express this imaginatively. Investigations will demonstrate how to describe the things that have influenced and inspired artists/designers and their work. Learners will start to create their own media content using Apple Macs. It combines theory with practice. This allows the learner to be analytical and creative and provides opportunities for personalisation and choice. Learners will be interested in using a variety of art materials, techniques and/or technology creatively to represent the subject matter.

Course Content

Learners will develop an understanding of artists’ and designers’ work and the influences on their practice. Design briefs will combine skilled and creative use of digital and non-digital design materials. Learners will experiment with a range of imaginative design ideas in 2D and/or 3D formats in response to their chosen brief. Opportunities to present facts and opinions about their own work and the work of other artists and designers will be part of the process.

Students will be required to undertake active and independent learning through study, practical exercises and including self and peer evaluation. The course is a combination of analytical study and practical creative learning processes.

Practical design sheets and sketchbooks will be produced along with a series of design and artwork ideas.

UNIT: Art and Design: Expressive Activity (National 4) H202 74

Learners will be expected to experiment and select suitable subject matter for an expressive art and design activity. They will also produce observational drawings and studies showing understanding of the subject matter and the visual elements. They will be asked to create artwork using a variety of art materials, techniques and/or technology creatively for expressive effect in their work.

UNIT: Art and Design: Design Activity (National 4) H20474

Learners will develop the ability to design imaginative and creative artwork in 2D and/or 3D. Some digital techniques and/or technology will be explored. At this level, learners should be able to plan and develop ideas for design work. For example, in the graphic area, the learner demonstrates creativity in the use of colour and font styles or through the creative use of materials, in illustration design.


Successful students could progress to visual communications courses. These include National 5 art and design courses or other visual media/film/graphic design/illustration courses depending on the level of their design work and portfolio. It could also be possible to continue to other SQA qualifications in the expressive arts, fashion, textiles and technologies.

Entry Requirements

You should be studying other National 5 awards and have already achieved at least two National 4 awards and the SQA IT Core Skill at National 4.

Introduction

Photography: SCQF Level 5/6 Attendance: This programme requires 3 hours of direct contact and additional study.



Entry Requirements

Desired, but not essential, prior experience in the use of camera controls.

Introduction

This course is based on completing a practical project that builds on some basic photographic theories (pertinent to both digital and silver-based photography) and a set of formative skills- building exercises. The course covers three SQA units, one of which is at Level 5 and two are at Level 6.

Course Content

The programme of activities will start off by teaching you how to accurately measure exposure in location and studio settings before moving on to examine landscape, portraiture and still life photography through a series of skills-building exercises. Photography can only ever be ‘people, places or things’ and having developed basic skills for all these elements you will almost certainly find yourself favoring a particular subject. This will form the agreed content for your final practical project.

The course is centered on digital imaging rather than silver-based photography (film) and as such the programme has been structured to include what we term ‘digital housekeeping’. In other words we will teach you how to prepare imagery for professional print output and web output. All our post-production activities use Adobe Photoshop on the Mac platform as befits the current industry norm.

Some activities will include using film as an introduction to hybrid processes and as a very significant learning tool for anyone choosing to study

photography. We will cover both the similarities and the differences in these two mediums. Written work in this very hands-on programme is limited to some fascinating research on famous photographers and a number of presentations will be given by your tutors to support this part of the programme.

To sum up, the programme is entirely focused on creative processes, it will contain challenging activities and anyone who wants to create individual expression will find this a rewarding vehicle for their aspirations.


Developing a portfolio may lead to progression to the Certificate programmes in Art and Design, Photography or Visual Communication (Graphic Design & Creative Media).

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. However, applicants should note that this Course is at National 4 which is equivalent to Intermediate 1 or Standard Grade, General level and therefore all pupils should be able to work at this level.

Introduction

The Early Education and Childcare National 4 has been designed to link closely to the proposed National Occupational Standards for Children’s Care, Learning and Development, and also for Play work. The Courses provide some of the underpinning knowledge that is required for the Occupational Standards and also experience of the practical skills required to work at this level in the sector. This is particularly evident in areas such as ‘Help to keep children safe’, ‘Support children’s development’, ‘Use support to develop own practice in children’s care, learning and development’.

Course Content

This programme comprises 4 units: Child Development, Working in Early Education and Childcare, Play in Early Education and Care of Children. To achieve the Course award the candidate must successfully achieve all the Units which make up the Course.


This Course or its Units may provide progression to:

• Early Education and Childcare Course at National 5 or other Courses and Units in Care at National 5 or SCQF 5 the completion of this Course does not allow the candidate to register as an early education and childcare worker with the Scottish Social Services Council. This award is in the form of a traditional Higher Learners will engage in a range of tasks, including research and investigation, which will enable them to understand the role of the professional and others in promoting child-centred practice in a range of settings.

This knowledge and these skills will be relevant for future experience in learning, life and work and will enhance the ability of learners to become responsible citizens. Learners will have the opportunity to recognise that each child or young person has a unique blend of abilities and needs, and to understand the rights to which children and young people are entitled.

They will understand that physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing are inextricably linked and are essential for successful learning and development. Learners will develop their thinking skills by evaluating and analysing theories that inform current childhood practice.

Introduction

The HNC Award in Childhood Practice at SCQF level 7 will equip students to work effectively in a range of care settings with a variety of service users. Learners will gain an understanding of the values and principles of social care and will learn how to integrate those values with the necessary skills and knowledge

Through academic study and practical work experience, this programme aims to prepare students for a rewarding career, understanding the demands and responsibilities of working with children and young people.

The programme will be delivered on a part time basis over a two-year period.. There are also 60 days placement to be completed over the 2 years.

Many students who have also obtained other relevant NQs at Higher level in conjunction with a good pass in their HNC Childhood Practice Graded Unit may also apply to primary teacher training.

Foundation Apprenticeship: Engineering Attendance: This programme requires 3 hours of direct contact and additional study.



Entry RequirementsYou will need to achieve a National 5 in Maths, Science and English at C grade or above. You will also need to take an engineering comprehension and aptitude test as part of the entry selection process.

Introduction

This is a new course which will be delivered in partnership with your school, local engineering companies, Dumfries & Galloway College, Dumfries and Galloway Council and Skills Development Scotland (SDS) to ensure you have the best learning opportunity and job prospects.

A Foundation Apprenticeship is an industry recognised qualification that you can study whilst still attending school, starting in S5 and completing in S6, providing a “fast track” route to employment. There are a number of regional companies directly involved with the partnership who are looking to recruit directly from the Foundation Apprenticeship intake.

This is a two-year programme designed for someone who is interested in developing a career in the engineering industry. They should currently be studying towards Science,Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects. These include; Maths, Physics, Science, Graphic Communications, Computing, Craft Studies and English.

Course Content

You will be a fully enrolled student of the College which gives you access to all of the same services and facilities as the rest of our students.

The first year (1 day per week) will focus mainly on Performing Engineering Operations (PEO), developing

practical engineering skills and some underpinning knowledge. You will also be involved in visits to local companies, learning about their business and seeing “Engineering in Action”. The employers will also set an “Engineering Project” which will be a project requiring problem solving and design skills using the experience you have developed while working as part of the team.

The second year (2 days per week) provides the opportunity to gain work experience where you will spend time with employers. During this year you will also undertake a Level 6 Manufacturing National Certificate (NC) which is the 2nd part of a Modern Apprenticeship Programme.

This qualification gives the opportunity to consolidate the skills you learned in year one and is approximately 60% theory and 40% practical delivery.

It is expected that successful completion of the new NPA in Long Hair Design with Make-Up at SCQF level 5 may lead to employment in a trainee position in the Hairdressing and Beauty industry, specifically Long Hair Design with Make-Up. This is obviously not an award which is expected to take the candidate directly into full-time employment as a fully qualified therapist.

Ultimately, with further study and/or training there may be a range of opportunities and career options within the sector.

Introduction

The course is designed to give you a broad knowledge of commodities and other foodstuffs which may be encountered in catering. You will study the range of products available, quality points for purchasing, range of suppliers and storage procedures. You will integrate practical skills to produce a range of dishes and will cost ingredients as part of this. You will also develop knowledge and understanding of event organisation. You will work with others to plan, organise and participate in a specific event and then evaluate the success of the event taking into account the role you and others played in it.

Introduction

The two units in the programme provide an introduction to the different commercial and non-commercial sectors of the hospitality industry and the types of provision they offer. You will also learn about the organisational aims of hospitality establishments and the products and services they provide.

You will develop vocational skills and knowledge and gain practical experience in menu planning; preparing, cooking and presenting a range of foods, serving food and drinks and planning, organising and running a small hospitality event. You will also have the opportunity to prepare for, and take part in, a job interview.

Psychological knowledge of individual and social behaviour can support learners in personal and professional relationships, and can enable them to understand some of the factors that influence behaviour. Learning in psychology therefore offers a suitable context for finding out about factors that are important to being a confident individual and a successful learner. There is personalisation and choice in selecting the topics and approaches to investigate and analyse human behaviour. As learners develop research skills in psychology, they will learn about the ethical implications of research and what this means for them as responsible citizens.

This course is designed to develop a candidate’s skills and knowledge for working in the sport and fitness industry.

Course Content

The course consists of 4 Sport and Recreation Units:

• DX0E 11 Assist with a Component of Activity Sessions

• DX0F 11 Employment Opportunities in the Sport and Recreation Industry

• DX0G 11 Assist with Fitness Programming

• DX0H 11 Assist with Daily Centre Duties


The course will provide candidates with practical experience in sports activity delivery, fitness activity deliver and leisure facility duties and could therefore lead to employment in either of these areas.

The course will provide progression opportunities to either an Intermediate Sport and Fitness Course or Higher in Sport and Fitness Course at Dumfries and Galloway College depending on the candidates’ additional qualifications. To progress to Higher Sport and Fitness, candidates should have successfully completed the course along with 2 additional National 5 awards. 45

Dining Facilities Dumfries CampusBreakfast, light refreshments and lunch services are all available in the canteen on Level 0. Our shop is next to the Students Association offices, also on Level 0.

The Costa Café is situated on Level 1. In addition to the canteen and cafe, a selection of vending machines offering drinks and snacks are also available. If you require any special dietary meals please make yourself known to a member of our catering team and they will be happy to help.

Stranraer Campus

A food service for students and staff at the campus includes soup and sandwiches, hot pastries, fresh salad and pasta pots with a comprehensive hot and cold beverage selection.

There’s a range of vending machines for hot and cold drinks available at all times. Or, if you fancy a change, lunch is available in the College Training Restaurant, with details advertised in the student lounge.
