Welcome to

Barnet and Southgate College

If you’re looking for a change in direction and a different environment from school, you’ve come to the right place. We’re one of the largest colleges in London with over

21,000 students of all ages and backgrounds.

We’re different because we link the majority of our 1,500 courses to a specific career or academic route. I realise that making the decision to come to college is a big step in your future and I want to help you achieve your goals, whether that’s getting the right job or going onto higher education. With this in mind we keep a close eye on the ever changing jobs market across all industry sectors from catering and creative arts to construction and business management to hairdressing, travel and tourism, IT, automotive technologies, sport, beauty, health and social care. Armed with this industry information, we shape our curriculum so that our courses are in line with what employers currently need.

The College is renowned for its broad range of courses and the high quality of its teaching. With full and part time courses in: A Levels, foundation degrees, professional qualifications, vocational studies, work skills training and education for people with learning difficulties and disabilities. Due to our excellent contacts our wide range of academic and vocational training is directly linked to local employers and regional industry demand. We also work closely with the National Apprenticeship Service delivering a number of apprenticeships across a variety of careers.

We deliver more than 20 subject areas across three main campuses at: Wood Street (High Barnet), Southgate (Enfield) and Grahame Park (Hendon). Being part of a large and diverse College community brings numerous benefits which help prepare you for the workplace, further skills training or university. You will receive on-going, one-to-one tutorial support but we try and support you to be independent and responsible for your own future success, as you would be at work or university. A broad range of student support services are also available including: mentors,

counsellors, work experience co-ordinators and careers advisors.

Did you know that the latest UKCES Skills Survey of thousands of employers revealed that UK businesses feel that College leavers are more work ready than school leavers of the same age? This isn’t surprising as it’s our aim is to ensure that all our students are prepared for the rigours of the industry they choose to enter – not only focusing on their skills base but also developing a professional mind set. College courses and the businesses they serve are so closely matched that we see them as two sides of the same coin. Apprentices, Traineeships, Work placements and industry experience are integral to most courses across all departments and it’s this vital experience that gives our students the competitive edge when looking for a job or securing a place at their chosen university or even re-training at college for a new career path.

For those of you wishing to progress onto Higher Education, our excellent A Level department based at the Wood Street campus is the second largest provider in the Barnet and Enfield area. Many of our students have secured places at prestigious universities across the UK.

A larger college also brings with it bigger and better facilities.

Our hi-tech £50 million Wood Street Campus houses our state-of-the-art Creative Studies, IT and Social Care facilities. In addition, we have automotive, construction and electrical workshops, professional beauty therapy spa management centre and hairdressing salon, a training restaurant, mechatronics centre, and newly-equipped science labs. Our specialist learning centres include SC Body and Paint Skills (for the automotive refinishing sector), our brand new Learning Disability Centre and Hospitality House. Our Grahame Park Campus will soon be transformed and relocated to a brand new dedicated Skills Centre in the heart of the Colindale

Regeneration Area, opening September 2016. This will include a new construction technology centre, industry standard training hair salon and library, which will both be open to the public. It forms part of a £550million urban plan to regenerate the wider Grahame Park area, a variety of students will have the opportunity to go on-site work experience and contribute to the new build.

In fact, everything we do at the College revolves around employability, from the work skills that are central to all our courses; to our facilities and equipment. We even have an in-house recruitment agency; pairing students with jobs and providing pre-employment skills training. We’re proud to be the only college in Greater London in partnership with REED NCFE working with students, promising to help them become three times more likely to be interviewed, recruited, and promoted. In addition to this we have a Job Centre Plus centre on site at the Southgate Campus, which is open to the public and students to drop in at any time.

We understand that you’ve chosen to continue your education or training for a specific reason and we want to help you find the right job or pathway at the end of your course. The College provides a friendly and supportive atmosphere at each campus; where you can learn, train and meet new people. We pride ourselves on offering smaller class sizes and closer tutorial support than many schools and universities. So, whether you’re looking to follow an academic or vocational skills route, progress onto university, improve your job prospects or you just want to get back into education, we’ll have a course to suit your needs.

Making the decision to come to Barnet and Southgate College is a long term investment in your future and I look forward to helping you achieve your goals and aspirations.

David Byrne Principal, Barnet and Southgate College

I’m originally from the USA but my family moved here and we now live in Enfield. I really enjoy all of my subjects and I think they will all help with my future career. I’d

really like to go into broadcasting of some description, maybe TV presenting? I love Film Studies, horror is my favourite genre of film especially thrillers. English Literature is a great subject to study, as it’s strengthening my vocabulary all the time.

The teaching at Barnet and Southgate College is great, everyone really encourages you and they go over work as many times as you need to, and we also go over past papers – so you really feel ready for the exams. Eventually I’d like to get into a good university to study journalism and communications or something related.

The great thing about A Levels here is that we have to carry out some sort of work experience, it has to be related to what we want to study or which job we would like – you don’t get that in school – I’d like to get into the BBC for a week on work placement.

After A Levels I’d like to study at university in the USA, back in New York, maybe at NYU or Penn State University, studying media and broadcasting.

The atmosphere at College is great as it’s so relaxed and comfortable, transport links are great and it really feels like I’m already at university. We are given the independence to be responsible and it makes me want to do better. I’m having a great time at College, it’s really the best.

If I were to sum up my time here I’d say the best thing about Barnet and Southgate College is that it’s getting me ready for university.

A Level and GCSE Courses

A Level AS & A2 CoursesLevel: 3

Duration: 2 years

Campus: Wood Street/Southgate

Course code: Various

What will I learn? You will have the opportunity to study up to 4 AS Levels, depending on your GCSE grades, and continue with three at A2 Level. Some of your A Levels will be the new linear style and others the established modular.

To progress to the A2 year you will need to achieve a D grade, those with an E will need head of subject approval. High achieving students will have the chance to complete the Extended Project.

If you wish to be considered for an A2 (second year of A Level) course you must have at least a grade D at AS level in the subject and produce copies of your AS exam results at your interview. All applicants must provide a satisfactory reference.

How will I be taught and assessed?Lessons typically consist of teacher led sessions with interactive activities and practical exercises. There are key assessment points throughout the year which mirror the specific exam that will be taken in the summer. Enrichment activities take place which enhance the learning experience.

What are the entry requirements?•   For three A Level subjects – between five and six GCSEs grade A*–C

in academic subjects, taken at one sitting.

•   For four A Level subjects – six GCSEs grades including A*/ A and B in academic subjects taken at one sitting.

The GCSEs must include certain subject-specific requirements, which will be explained at your interview. Applicants may also be required to take an online aptitude test or other subject specific qualifying test. Those with other qualifications may be considered at the discretion of the College.

What can the course lead to?You will be equipped for a wide range of Higher Education courses and Higher Apprenticeships.

GCSE CoursesDuration: 1 year

Campus: Southgate

Course code: Various

What will I learn? All students take three units for their chosen subject.

How will I be taught and assessed? All units will be assessed by one hour written exams, each paper accounts for 25% of the overall marks. Your work will be assessed by the quality of your written communication skills. You will also have to complete assignments, this accounts for the remaining 25% of the marks. For Science based GCSEs lessons will consist of lectures and lab based practical exercises as appropriate. Extensive use is made of current classroom technology and field trips. You will also attend tutorials and if required additional workshop support is provided.

What are the entry requirements? A minimum grade D in English or Maths. For Science based GCSEs you will be expected to have at least a grade D in Core Science and grade D in Additional Science. We will consider BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Science, subject to your performance in the pre-enrolment test. You will also be expected to demonstrate through assessment, a standard of literacy and numeracy suitable for a Level 2 qualification. You must have a genuine interest in and an aptitude for science.

Isabella Thackara is aiming to go to Chelsea School of Art or Goldsmiths I’m getting a lot of work done at Barnet and Southgate College and the facilities at Wood Street are great – really modern and there’s everything that you need. I love my course and all of the staff and tutors are very good, they’re so supportive and help you explore using a lot of materials, which is great for the course as you can try out so many mediums.

My aim is to stay in London after my course, ideally I’d like to get into Chelsea or Goldsmiths. London is the hub of everything creative. I really want to go to university and study Fine Art working in 2D and sculpture. The facilities and campus at Wood Street are so good and there’s so much to work with here, the options are endless! You can try everything from resin casting, screen printing, woodwork, metalwork, painting, acrylics, photography and sculpture. The College really supports you with all your work and what you should be doing later in life. My tutors have been so nice helping me and giving me really good advice about what I should be doing in the future which really helped me choose fine art.

I came to college from a school in Bedford to be closer to London, moving here was the best decision I’ve ever made, yes it was a bit of a change coming to college and I thought it was going to be a bit of a shock but it’s great and so friendly. I came from an all girls’ school and wasn’t actually expecting it to be so easy to settle in, I really didn’t expect people to be so nice and I love it here.

I found out about the Motorsport course through the College website and then I came along to one of the open days at the Southgate Campus and met with some of

the tutors, who explained all about the course and I knew that it was the right one for me.

After my GCSEs I stayed on at school and did my A Levels, but it didn’t go to plan and I left with some AS Level UCAS points. I really wanted to get into the motorsport industry and the BTEC course seemed like a better option for me rather than A Levels, as it seemed to be the most beneficial route to help get me to university.

I now come into College three days a week and the other two days I work in a garage. College has helped me with my job in the garage as I have found the course really helpful and what I learn at college I implement at work all the time.

I’m in my second year of my course now and I work at the garage part time. I think working has given me an advantage, I have more experience and knowledge, I think this will help me in the future as well. The course has been great, the teaching is really good and I find it all very interesting. It has really opened up the motorsport industry to me and I can see all the relevant career paths into the industry, which has been helpful.

I only have a few months left on the course and I finish this summer. The course has been so good as it has taught me new things in a practical way, at school it’s much more academic and I learn more this way. The atmosphere compared to school is not as intense, it’s a bit calmer, I always felt under pressure at school but here it’s a more mature environment. I found it OK adjusting here after school as I made friends easily, it was hard at first as everyone is timid, but now we all get on its great. My parents have been fully supportive of my choices and they are happy with the College also.

My plans now? I have already applied to university courses to further my career in motorsport. I’ve applied for degrees in automotive and motorsport engineering and my BTEC course is recognised by the universities. I’m pleased to say I already have four university offers but my top choices are Huddersfield or Hertfordshire. My results come out in August and I am hoping for a distinction or good merit so I get my university place.

I am doing the BTEC Diploma in Business that lasts two years and is based at Wood Street Campus. It is fantastic. You are working on a lot of assignments every

week, so you need to make sure you keep on track. But it is a good way of managing your time outside of college. You’ve got enough time to plan when to do your coursework. It is the equivalent of doing A Levels, the only difference is that it is based on coursework rather than exams.

I chose the BTEC rather than A Levels for two reasons. Firstly, you get to focus on the subject that you really enjoy doing. I have a passion for business and it really gives me a boost to learn more about that subject. Secondly, it fits in with my life. You get coursework and you do it when you get it. I don’t need extra time to do revision, because I can work my way through the coursework. I can plan when and how I do it alongside anything else I have going on outside of college.

REED NCFE is fantastic for finding jobs for students. At first, they helped me find work with SportsDirect. I had also previously worked for Explore Learning and I came across the company again on an employment day at the College. It gave me the opportunity to reconnect with them and I found out that they had opened up a branch near to where I live. The reason I left in the first place was because it was too far to travel, so it gave me the chance to meet them again and get back on track.

Being at the College is definitely preparing me for the world of work. It does not really matter if you are doing a job that is not directly linked to the subject that you are studying for. For example, Explore Learning is based on teaching Maths and English, but I am studying Business.

Then again, I want to teach in my future career so it gives me the chance to learn more about working with kids as well as keeping my English and Maths skills up to date. Getting a job through REED NCFE and using the Employment Zone really helps with different employability skills. It also helps to develop

confidence through working with team members.

We have the new student hub that has opened up at the Wood Street Campus and they have a similar hub in the Southgate Campus as well. It allows students the opportunity to socialise, get to know their peers and work together.

We also have a number of careers services, and advisors, that can help students with writing personal statements, filling in UCAS forms and, of course, providing career information. There are plenty of facilities - we have resources like the library, IT support, and counsellors. Everyone is here to support you.

The College encourages you to find work placements during half term or the summer holidays. They really do support you in trying to find jobs, especially through the career services. REED NCFE has great links with employers. They are there for recruiting and to help us to get jobs. They are constantly sending emails with the latest vacancies that we might be interested in.

In five years’ time I can see myself completing a business degree and a teaching degree and hopefully working in a secondary school teaching business studies.

I am finding the course enjoyable, and I am happy, although some of the units are very challenging. I am the only girl in my class, so when I first started I was a bit nervous

about how I was going to get on with the boys. But I was helped because most of the teachers are females. It has meant that I am not shy any more and I don’t feel nervous. In fact, being the only girl in my class has made me feel confident talking in front of boys.

The College is preparing me for work by providing me with opportunities. For example, right now I am working as one of the DigiDesk advisors. This is the best opportunity I have ever had. It is related to my course and it is a good experience helping people with their IT or E-learning, and sometimes their college work. It has been really helpful for me and for the students as well.

DigiDesk is basically an IT support service. It is all about helping students, and staff, in the College with basic IT, for example Microsoft Office and PowerPoint, if they don’t know how to use them. I have been working as a DigiDesk advisor for six or seven months and really enjoy it.

When I lived in Wolverhampton, I used to volunteer for an organisation which helped people who could not speak English very well with visas, housing, everything really. I really like helping and volunteering.

The teachers here are supportive and the students are respectful and friendly with you. The teachers give you all the opportunities they can; they don’t just leave you alone and say ‘get on with it’. If you don’t know something, they will help you. They put their time in with workshops, so they can help you, for example, make your deadlines.

What I would say to anyone thinking about coming to Barnet and Southgate College is that it is one of the most modern of all the adult colleges. It is all aimed at giving you every opportunity to get to where you want to be. This is the most supportive college I have attended, more so than the college that I went to in Wolverhampton.

I’ve worked my way up to a Level 3 qualification from studying levels one and two, and all of the catering courses have been amazing so far. However the jump

to working on Level 3 is quite intense as you have a lot more responsibility where you have to supervise a lot but it’s good in a way as it’s really preparing me for what I want to do, which is to work in a top restaurant or hotel, maybe abroad. It’s a demanding industry, which College prepares you for.

As I’ve been here for a few years now I‘ve had the opportunity to go on work experience at a number of places such as Kew Gardens and I helped in the catering tents during London 2012, I couldn’t believe I was actually at the Olympics! We also assist at BBC Master Chef and other high profile events, it’s great.

My interest long term is to stay in catering, I love the industry and I’d be happy to go into anything that involves catering. But I have a great interest in going to Japan as I love the discipline in the kitchens there and working with sushi, maybe one day I’ll be working there.

Whatever I do, the College has really helped prepare me for a career in the catering industry as they’ve pushed me to the limit, in a good way. I don’t know what I’d do if I wasn’t at College, it has given me real direction. Plus the facilities are great; it’s all modern and what you need but at the end of the day you can’t blame the tools, you have to work hard as well.

You get great support from all of the tutors they are always there to tell you where you need to improve and also be a shoulder to rely on, so you do get a bit of TLC at College as well. In fact it’s amazing here at College, there’s a lot of sweat and tears, but it’s all definitely worth it, I’d give the College 10 out of 10!

I came to the UK when I was 16 years old from Guinea in West Africa. Those first few months in the U.K were very challenging. To help develop my English I joined on

an Entry Level 2 ESOL course at Barnet and Southgate College for a year before progressing onto my A Levels at the Wood Street Campus of the College. I studied Mathematics, Physics and French and my ultimate aim was to get into a good university. As a result of my hard work, I managed to do well in my A Levels and secured a place at Kings College University London, this was a great achievement for me and I went on to study and graduate with a Master’s.

I am currently undertaking PhD. research in computer-aided diagnosis, machine learning, pattern recognition, computer vision and medical imaging at Brunel. I am also teaching Mathematics and Computing to year 1 and year 2 undergraduate students in the Computer Science department at Brunel University. I began the PhD after completing my BSc and Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering at King’s College University, London. The quality of my Master’s dissertation led me to being offered a fully funded PhD. Scholarship at Brunel University, London.

I know from experience studies can be challenging but I would recommend students, especially young ESOL students who may have come from difficult circumstances to have a vision, passion, belief and courage. I believe the combination of these will help you achieve your dreams. I am passionate about the College; I still come in now and then to talk to the students and try and inspire them.

Having a vision, passion, belief and courage has led me to study at one of the top universities in the UK and as a researcher it has offered me the opportunity to work with some of the leading scientists in computer-aided medical image analysis. As a scientist it has given me the opportunity to share my knowledge through teaching and attending conferences around the world.

Life has totally changed for me because of Barnet and Southgate College. I wouldn’t have achieved my dreams without the support and excellent teaching provided at the College.

A Bridging Course is a great opportunity to retake qualifications to improve your grades, to get into higher education or achieve a better

job than you would have before. I’d finished school with 4 GCSEs and needed 6, plus I wasn’t very happy with my English and Maths GCSE grades so I was looking for somewhere to retake them. Barnet and Southgate College was the only college offering me the opportunity to do that at that time. The students on the course were all very friendly and nice, and the teachers were really supportive and caring. They supported me throughout the course with my personal needs, keeping up with homework and classwork and they just made sure I knew how to do the best I could do. Work experience was part of the course and it was really valuable. I worked at Cancer Research UK and it was really interesting and a good learning experience. I was working in the shop and learned how to deal with customers, plus I learned all the things you need to know to work well in the shop, from organising stock to helping them prepare and run a fundraising event. As well as it being very useful if I ever want to work in retail, I also learned communication and organisational skills, which I’ll be able to use later on, and I got to meet new people and learned how to deal with customers well. It wasn’t just all about coursework, either; we were given help on what to do next. The Careers Advisors spoke to us all about possible courses we could progress on to, about Apprenticeships and what you should put in your CVs. There was lots of useful advice. I’m also going to be doing work experience in the summer holidays as part of my A Levels, which is really good. It’ll be for two weeks and it will be linked to my course and my future career plans. I’d like to do something in the film industry – directing or editing, which are the part of my course I really enjoy – or become a teacher, I’m not sure yet, so hopefully the College will be able to help me find a work placement that’s linked to those.”

Making your dreams come trueJordan Brumant studied Hairdressing as an apprentice at the College. After finishing touring as the Sugababes’ hair stylist, he has just opened a new salon in Maida Vale.

I joined Barnet and Southgate College when I was 18 as a hairdressing apprentice. I’d been working in hairdressing salons since I was 13, so when the opportunity came

to do an apprenticeship I jumped at it as I knew I needed the official qualifications to go forward in my career. At the time I worked in a salon in Watford, called the Crown Academy, I was there most of the week and I came into Barnet and Southgate College one day a week, so I got real on the job training and I was being paid whilst I trained at the same time. The salon introduced me to the College as I’d left school without any qualifications and I needed a boost in that area. I studied for the NVQ levels 2 in hairdressing, my dream back then was to one day own my own chain of hairdressing salons or to move abroad and be a personal stylist.

I really enjoyed the training at college and we had the opportunity to take part in a number of national competitions and focus on our interests, one of mine at the time was working on African Caribbean hair type and I worked on this for one of my entries to a competition, where I chose the theme of the year 2000 and beyond, my inspiration was a Nubian sculpture, so I wanted to create a hair design and mood board that reflected this and it was really strong and bang on trend, so I incorporated neon jewellery and lace into the outfit, it was all about creating the total look so that included the fashion of my model. All of this training has been invaluable to me since then.

Whilst at college I also won the Apprentice of the Year Award at the student achievement awards, One College Many Stars. Since I’ve finished my course I’ve literally gone from strength to strength – working for celebrity clients and on national TV and my work has been featured in national magazines and the media.

I still come into college to do master classes with the students and I was lucky enough to be recruited to go on tour with pop band the Sugababes – this was exciting and a great experience. I already work on a number of celebrity clients, including Sam Faiers from The Only Way is Essex I recently created a fairy tale-inspired style for her which was perfect for the ‘Prince and Princess’ theme of a party held to mark the end of the current season of the hit ITV2 reality show. Sam wanted to look and feel like a princess; so I created body through the ends of the hair and added Beauty Works Clip-Ins for extra volume and thickness. Delighted with the results, Sam tweeted: ‘Loved my princess hair yesterday @HBJBOfficial thank u’. This was great.

However what I am most proud of is the fact that I’m now only 20 years old and I’ve just opened up a brand new salon in Maida Vale! Who knows maybe one day I will employ an apprentice that also comes to Barnet and Southgate College to train just like me.

I got into the beauty industry by completing the HND in Beauty Therapy and Health Studies and then I completed a degree which was the B.A. (Hons.) in

Fashion Management at the London College of Fashion.

After my degree I worked at the Savoy Hotel as a beauty therapist and then went onto work for Espa in Harvey Nichols. It was from here that I was head hunted to start up the Brow Bar in Harrods. I was actually head hunted by Estee Lauder to work in Harrods, which was incredibly unexpected but it was a fantastic accomplishment for me to begin this new chapter and make this new aspect of the business work for Harrods, which was back in 2004.

It was at this time that I also looked into establishing my career in teaching and I started as a part-time sessional lecturer at Barnet and Southgate College in 2005, I’m now a full-time permanent lecturer here at the College and I’m proud to have been teaching here for the last nine years.

I’m based at ‘The Spa’, which is a new purpose-built spa and beauty salon in Graseby House, adjacent to the Wood Street Campus in High Barnet. Having access to and training in industry standard facilities improves the students’ employability once they’ve completed their course, with full and part-time courses in everything from beauty therapy, hairdressing, nail art, massage, specialist and media make-up. Our students also receive support in arranging work experience opportunities, which often leads them onto full or part-time employment.

I still work in Harrods to enable me to keep my industry experience relevant. I still love the interaction with the students and being able to pass on my relevant knowledge of the industry onto them, this also helps them to be more successful with their careers, as it helps them understand what is expected of them once they’re employed.

In fact, I always tell the students to try and work hard and be the best in their job, to aim high and become the expert in your treatments and try to build a good relationship with your clients and colleagues. You’ll need to be prepared to work hard whatever you do and whatever the course, but if you succeed in a beauty career you’ll have the opportunity to work all over the world within this industry so there’ll always be opportunities out there and you’ll always have the option to work for yourself or for a company, which can sometimes be very flexible part-time or full-time hours.

Whatever they do I also try and encourage my students to be aware of the new beauty and fashion trends in the industry to help them stay ahead of what’s happening. It really is an exciting industry to be part of and I wouldn’t change what I do for the world. I love my jobs – both of them; working for Harrods and as a lecturer for Barnet and Southgate College.

But as Kyle Keown-Price discovered when he began a Level 1 Childcare course at Barnet and Southgate College, it can cut both ways. Kyle,

18, recalls: “I was one of two males doing the course, and I did get quite a lot of reaction on my first day from other students. All the girls looked at me like – what’s a boy doing on a childcare course? I felt I really had to prove myself and show that I was in it for the long run. After a few weeks I had managed to do that, and started to make friends.”

After taking GCSEs at Enfield Grammar School, Kyle was considering his future options. “I am the eldest of six siblings, and there are lot of young children in my extended family. I always enjoyed looking after them, and relatives used to comment how good I was with children, so I decided to apply for a childcare course,” he says.

“I chose Barnet and Southgate College because it is near where I live, it had the right course and excellent facilities; they have thought of everything.”

Before he began studying, he used his initiative to gain work experience. “I phoned the manager of a local nursery to ask if I could do voluntary work, and after they made all the necessary checks on me, they took me on. I knew then it was the right thing for me; on the first day I had a big smile on my face and all the children seemed to really like me.”

In September 2012 he began studying childcare at Barnet and Southgate College. He says: “I really liked the course so I found it easy to study. The teachers were great; they taught me all I needed to get on, and they were always happy to help. I made good friends with the other students who I still talk to.”

During the year-long Level 1 course, Kyle was regarded by his teachers as a passionate and hard working student, with a great sense of humour. He was offered a work placement at Bright Stars Nursery in Enfield, where he impressed staff with his attitude, relationships with babies and children and his commitment to work. The nursery offered Kyle an

apprenticeship after he completed the Level 1 course. He took up the offer, and is continuing to study childcare at the same time.

He explains: “My aim is to pass Levels 2 and 3, get more work experience, and progress to university. My long-term dream is to open up my own nursery, but at the moment my main focus is getting the qualifications and experience because I know it will pay off in the end.”

He is still confident he has made the right career choice, but says that initially at work, he encountered more raised eyebrows. “I know some of the parents weren’t sure what to think when they saw me, but again, I have managed to prove I can do the job, and I’m good at it. I work with two to three year olds, and I really enjoy looking after them all, but the boys in particular love having me around. We have a lot of fun and it’s nice to feel I can be a role model for them.

I can’t blame people for being surprised when they see a man doing childcare, because it is pretty much all females doing this work. My family and friends are very proud of me for getting a job, and I really feel I have fallen on my feet doing something I love.”

I joined the College on a Construction Multi-skills course so I could get a taster in a number of areas including painting, decorating and brickwork. I

love learning and really enjoyed this as I’m just not that academic and school isn’t the best environment for me. Although I’m still at school as I have to finish my GCSEs, it’s great as my school contacted the College and they arranged for me to come in three days a week and I spend two days at school. My parents were really happy about this as I’ve finally found something that I enjoy and that I’m passionate about and this is what I want to do as a career.

I get a lot of support from the tutors at college and they really understand where I’m coming from. The atmosphere is great and really friendly. I much prefer college to school as I’m treated as an adult here and I get much more independence. It’s just a different environment. I meet people from all different religions and backgrounds but we all get on, everyone is just focused on training for a new skill and then getting a job and having a career at college – I just can’t wait to start working and earning.

School was not a good time for me. I was overweight and bullied. I left with really bad grades - only two A to Cs and they were in ICT (Information and

Communications Technology). When I started at the College in 2008 at the age of 16, I was 18 stone. I enrolled on a Level 1 Sports course and then over the years I did Level 2 and Level 3. Luckily with all the facilities here, the teachers and all the support I started training and got healthier.

This College offers a wide range of sports, I got the opportunity to play football, rugby, basketball, tennis and badminton. I chose rugby and got into rugby league. The College has amazing links with clubs for rugby union and rugby league. For rugby league it is with the London Skolars and for rugby union, Saracens. Rugby league was my game as it is faster and I found union a bit frustrating.

There is a lot of help and support to find employment. I got employment outside the College because the College offers Level 2 or 3 courses and you can do things like the Sports Leaders awards. This is where you go into schools and work with kids. It was because of this experience that I gained employment at ‘Little Kickers’, coaching football. I have been there three years and am now head coach, all because of the opportunities that I had at the College.

Last year I worked in the College gym every day, I had a full-time contract but because I am doing my Foundation Degree I had to cut my hours down and the College was so supportive in that respect. Now I am working in the gym one day a week.

The College offers qualifications that would have cost hundreds of pounds in the outside world – for example FA Levels 1 and 2, which help a lot with employment opportunities. You can also gain qualifications to work at the gym. So the College supports you for the outside world as well. I am now studying for the Foundation Degree. I work here and study here, I couldn’t ask for much more. The course covers everything from sports psychology to diet, nutrition and offers sports placements.

I haven’t been anywhere before that offers so many opportunities in so many different career paths. Everyone I know that came here on a sports course and has left is employed in the sports industry. They are doing sports coaching, sports physio and personal training, which in itself is very powerful. So I would highly recommend it. The Foundation Degree will finish next September then I have the option to do an add-on year at Middlesex University to gain a degree. I plan to become a teacher in the near future.

Use your initiative, take every opportunity, enrol on any courses that are put on over the half-term or the summer holidays. A lot of kids are like ‘I can’t be bothered with that’ but I took every course and grabbed every opportunity and it is starting to pay off.

This College has changed my life; having a stammer is hard, but the teachers here gave me support and confidence. Five years ago there would have been no way I could have done this interview with my stammer but they fill you with confidence here and make you feel like a man.

I’ve been teaching at the College since 1996, and a subject coach for Mathematics since 2005. I really enjoy teaching the students and seeing them progress.

I like to make the subject interesting and as interactive as possible. After I’d been teaching mathematics in the College for a few years; I attended a number of internal and external training sessions about new teaching approaches for enhancing students’ learning and achievements. I’m always looking for new teaching methods and I like being open minded. Since the training I’ve tried many of these new approaches in my teaching practice, some more successfully than others. I also started to attend a network of regional meetings for mathematics where I met with incredibly enthusiastic teachers and was further inspired to teach with ‘difference’ at the College.

The College environment is different to school in that it’s more mature and I like to involve my students as much as possible, I’m a keen user of IT in the classroom, in fact I also have a background in IT which is helpful. It’s about encouraging students to use IT for their own learning use; via websites, using graphics software and more recently students actually using their tablets and mobile smart phones in mathematics classes. All students welcome any new teaching methods and they really enjoyed the lessons.

I was proud to be nominated in 2010 for a national LSIS award and I was fortunate to have won in the category “Teaching, training and learner practitioner” I was so pleased to win a STAR Award for my work, especially as it was based on the student feedback that I had received. This is very rewarding indeed. In fact, I really enjoy working with young people of all abilities, my students come from different backgrounds and from all over the world, which makes my job really interesting and fun.

It is used to facilitate movement, promote balance, promote an increase or decrease in muscle tone, promote relaxation, promote sensory integration and improve fitness, exercise tolerance and communication skills. It is popular in special needs schools and is becoming increasingly popular as a piece of apparatus that virtually all people, regardless of their abilities, can access, benefit from and enjoy. This new facility for the College has a bespoke space designed within the mini sports hall complex. We are currently fundraising for the trampoline and matting for the floor and walls.

First Aid & Physiotherapy RoomBoth rooms are serviced by ceiling hoists for wheelchair users.

The First Aid room is staffed by a fully trained nurse who has a key role in staff training and clinical supervision.

A full-time physiotherapist is employed for the hydrotherapy pool and physiotherapy programmes for students.

Multi Skills Craft Room & Art RoomThe new facility has a multi-skills art and craft room including kiln and has an art-room facility on the first floor.

Drama Studio & Music RoomThis is situated on the first floor within a vocational skills area including an art room, music room with sound-proofing, drama studio with stage, stage rigging, staging lights and sound equipment.

Catering Kitchens, Art Gallery, Café and ShopThese facilities are available alongside the atrium entrance to the centre forming an essential part of the students’ vocational and work-based learning activities.

The new learning disabilities Centre of Excellence at the Southgate Campus is amongst the best in London with dedicated, state-of-the-art specialist facilities that serve our surrounding communities. This enables students with learning difficulties such as autism and other complex support needs to be able to come and learn academic and employment skills within a supportive and inspirational building. Learning Difficulties and Independent Living

Janine’s StoryJanine found mainstream education challenging due to poor language comprehension and social skills. Because of her learning difficulties, she couldn’t participate fully in school life. And, like many of the students on our LLDD courses, Janine lacked confidence.

She came to us in September 2013, having been out of education for months. When she started on Next Step she was extremely shy. She found understanding and interacting with other students almost impossible.

Through individual tutorials, support sessions and class activities, we’ve worked with Janine on her Individual Learning Plan goals. She’s steadily grown more confident and self-assured. Her language skills have improved dramatically, thanks to individual weekly sessions with our learning support team.

We’ve also helped Janine improve her social skills by, for example, encouraging her to assist other students with her excellent ICT knowledge. This has motivated her to interact with people in a totally new way.

Now, Janine has the confidence to contribute to all class discussions. She’s happy to speak (and even sing!) in front of the class. She’s eager to learn, and comes to every class bubbling with enthusiasm.

Janine has made many friends within the group, whom she sees in and out of college. She’s completed a very successful work experience placement at the RAF museum, and is hoping to go on to the BTEC Performing Arts course next year.

CourseLinkA course for 16-19 year old learners recovering from mental health conditions.

Who is CourseLink for? CourseLink is a progression route for young people aged 16-19 who are recovering from mental health conditions or who are suffering from stress or distress which means that they are not ready to access mainstream college courses.

Where does CourseLink happen? The course is held at: Barnet and Southgate College Southgate Campus High Street Southgate N14 6BS

How is CourseLink different from other courses? The classes are small, with no more than 10 students. All lessons are in the afternoon and we have lots of extra support in the classroom.

Our lessons have an emphasis on participation and group interaction; we hope that students will learn from each other as well as from their teachers.

For the past 7 years this programme has been a success, enabling students to progress.

What subjects are studied on CourseLink? For the first 6 weeks students attend for 2 days a week studying Personal & Social Development as well as English and Maths up to Level 2.

After 6 weeks the 4 day programme starts, adding subjects including Art and IT.

Students can also take a work experience option if they choose.

What next? The purpose of CourseLink is to help students progress in the future. During CourseLink there will be opportunities to explore future possibilities including mainstream courses, career pathways, training and voluntary work.

We hope that gaining confidence and qualifications will help students move on to whatever they want to do.

Parent PowerFrom September 2013 the education leaving age rose to 17 and from 2015 it will rise again, to 18. However, post  16 education doesn’t just mean staying at school full-time: your child can stay at school, go to college, or take up an apprenticeship or a part-time training course. They can earn money and learn new skills at the same time if they want to.

Our A Level department is the second largest provider in the Barnet and Enfield areas, which provides those who wish to progress onto Higher

Education a clear route. However, for many students academic routes are not the most appropriate option; with an increasing number of vocational and professional education programmes on offer there are now other exciting pathways which lead students to greater success and fulfilment in their working life.

A recent Edge Foundation survey discovered that many young people are being actively discouraged from opting for vocational and professional education - with just a quarter of parents (27%) judging it to be worthwhile*. This is despite evidence that people who choose a practical, hands-on approach to learning are as fulfilled as people who took an academic route.**

Additionally, research from the 2012 First Steps to Wealth Report, illustrates that the lifetime earnings of a graduate are comparable with the lifetime earnings of many former apprentices - for example construction apprentices earn a total of £1,504,000 over their life time compared with £1,612,000 for a graduate,*** dispelling the fear that university degrees lead to much higher life time incomes.

The survey identified that many students (22%) are being advised by parents and schools that they are ‘too clever’ for vocational and professional education. Only half (51%) of parents encouraged their child’s choice to pursue vocational qualifications, compared to three quarters (74%) who were happy to support their child through an academic route.

This highlights a growing problem: you as parents are not getting access to the most up to date career information to allow you to make informed choices about your children’s future. We understand that parents remain the biggest influence on their children’s education (44%), so we need to equip you with the knowledge and skills to be able to give sound, informed advice about the options available for you child.

There continues to be a stigma attached to vocational and professional education which is unfounded. This country has a huge challenge ahead in ensuring that our children are equipped with the right skills to ensure a successful workforce of the future, and parents are part of that journey. It is essential that parents understand the future job market and therefore enable and encourage their children to train appropriately so they do not become another number in the endless list of university graduates that cannot secure employment.

Recent independent research commissioned by the Association of Colleges (AoC) found that many parents admit they struggle to give their child the right advise when it comes to the world of work. The Barnet and Southgate College REED NCFE Employment Zone has been developed with this research in mind. At the REED NCFE Employment Zone students are professionally guided to help them find the right job after their course, and they are taught how to think and behave in a work environment. This is done via work placements, interview training, CV writing skills and specialist careers advice as well as sessions run by employers within their subject area. In a recent survey of 1,264 employers conducted by REED, 97% put the workplace ‘mind-set’ element ahead of skills, as something they look for when recruiting. In a further study of 30,000 CVs, REED found that demonstrating a workplace mind-set on a CV “tripled your chances of getting and keeping” the best job.

Barnet and Southgate College recognise parents as a valuable source of information to help us provide you with the detail to make an informed choice about your child’s future education and progress. We want to know what is it you want from us in terms of advice and guidance and how we can help you to better advice your children? With this in mind we have developed various communications channels for you to engage with us.

A parents’ webpage: http://www.barnetsouthgate.ac.uk/information-for-parents

To encourage you to engage with us we often offer prize draws for survey entrants, these include track days, short culinary arts courses, spa treatments and many more – so it’s worthwhile! Let us know what you want, and what you think.

The Edge Foundation Survey*Research conducted by OnePoll in January 2014, surveyed 2,230 people aged 18-35 in full time employment in the UK.

**Respondents were asked to score on a scale of 1-10 (where 10 = happiest)

Getting the right advice for your child“It is essential that parents understand the future job market and therefore enable and encourage their children to train appropriately.”

There are five careers advisors at Barnet and Southgate College, two are based at Wood Street, two at Southgate and one at Grahame Park.

Members of our team also work at Edmonton Green, Child’s Hill Library and Burnt Oak Community Centre.

The essence of careers guidance is helping people to make decisions about learning and work, and to manage their career progress. Advisers do this through offering one-to-one help and delivering group workshops. Our aim is to give students a full picture of their options, talk through the pros and cons and help each student to identify the best course for them.

Some common questions students ask are: What are my options for next year, What should I study at university, Can you check my personal statement, Would you have a look at my CV, What jobs can I get after this course and even: I want to earn lots of money but I don’t want to work very hard – what should I do?!

However, a fundamental part of the careers adviser’s code is impartiality. We are not a sales team working on behalf of the College and it’s not our job to sign up your child to college courses. Our role is to explore the full range of appropriate options with them, looking at the advantages and disadvantages and through this to help young people make decisions which are right for them – and that actually might not be to study on a course at Barnet and Southgate College.

We welcome parents to come in and talk to us with their child. In fact, this can be really helpful as parents know their children well and often have useful insight regarding what their children enjoy and are good at.

“I think we offer a number of things at college that schools just do not offer. I think we offer a wider range of opportunities in our mix of academic and vocational courses and consequently the chance to study something

new which is not available in school; a fresh start - a chance to define yourself as you wish, rather than conforming to other people’s established expectations of you; a chance to interact with a broader mix of people and to expand your horizons.

As part of our job we attend a number of external events such as Higher Education Fairs with students, and we also participate in school events. We are also starting to work at employer fairs this year so that students can meet employers and find out about jobs, apprenticeships, volunteering and training opportunities.

It’s important for us to connect with students at schools and within college. At the beginning of the academic year, the Learner Services team carry out induction talks with each group of new students. This gives us the opportunity to tell students about our services and how to find us. Class tutors can also sign up for further group talks which gives us the opportunity to reach more students. We cover things like Introduction to Higher Education, Alternatives to HE, Applying to University, Writing a Personal Statement, what to do next after your current course, Preparing for Interviews and Career opportunities in specific fields and Progression.

Sometimes students sign up for a course which really doesn’t suit them which can easily lead to de-motivation and under performance. We can help support them to identify better options and channel their energies into something they are more enthusiastic about. We are here to help them take the next step, whether that’s Higher Education, another further education course, an apprenticeship or employment.

We also help to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to put their career plans into action so that they can get into the courses for the job they want.”

Susan Jackson, Careers Advisor

I love my job. I meet a variety of people at different stages in their lives and with such a wide range of needs and ambitions. There’s always something new to learn and I receive continuous on-going training and this has all sorts of benefits. For example, I recently went to an event at a local university which was focused on nursing and midwifery. Learning about what makes a high calibre applicant for these degrees has really helped me when advising clients and giving mock interviews.

I think employers these days are looking for a work ‘mind-set’ and by that I mean a willingness to turn up on time, focus on the task and apply themselves, a readiness to muck in and do both the humble and the more complex tasks, a willingness to learn and to sometimes put up with the odd mundane task. Everyone has to start somewhere.

I’ve been working at the College for nearly two years and there have been so many good things about this job but two in particular that stand out to me is when a student walks out of your office with a smile on their face because they have a plan and they’re excited about it and secondly when they rush up to you in the corridor to tell you that they’ve been offered a place on the course they wanted or have got the job that they went for, it’s very rewarding indeed.

Technical BaccalaureateFor students seeking a path to university, the College’s Technical Baccalaureate programmes will offer a high quality alternative to the A Level study route.

These enhanced academic qualifications will give young people aspiring to a technical and vocational career a first-class qualification,

In addition to the main Level 3 technical qualification, students will study an exciting new core maths subject and also complete an extended project, which will develop and test students’ skills in extended writing, communication, research, self-discipline and self-motivation. Students studying a Technical Baccalaureate Level 3 will also be required to undertake an extended work placement, usually in their second year.

Students who achieve the Technical Baccalaureate will have an academic and competitive edge when applying for employment in their field of study, applying for higher apprenticeships, or when looking progression to university.

Coming soon... new Colindale Campus for September 2016The College is executing exciting plans to build a brand new campus as part of a major regeneration scheme in Colindale.

The new site will be a relocation of the existing Grahame Park Campus, on Grahame Park Way, to Lanacre Avenue and will be a short 5 minute

walk from Colindale tube station. The accessible, urban location of the new campus and its close proximity to Underground and bus links will ensure an improved experience for college students and the local community.

It forms part of a £550 million urban master plan to regenerate the wider Grahame Park area; including 22,000 new residential dwellings. Building works will begin in February 2015, with the aim to have the new campus completed and ready for the start of the academic year in September 2016.

The new modern facility will bring education and training closer to the local community. A new college also brings with it better facilities, with a state-of-art learning environment. This will include the Construction Technology Centre for the College’s brickwork, carpentry & joinery, plastering, wall & floor tiling and plumbing courses. The Centre will offer access to cutting edge facilities in line with

industry advancements and will support skills development and progression through to higher level qualifications. The Centre will also include ‘The Salon’, a training hair salon open to the public to feature the College’s hairdressing and barbering courses.

Additional community services at the new campus will include a new London Borough of Barnet Public Library and a new ‘hub’ for the Barnet Centre for Independent Living (B-CIL). B-CIL is a hub centre to provide support and advice for people with disabilities in respect of a range of matters such as, advocacy matters, life skills, computer skills and employment. It is a centre run largely by people with disabilities for people with disabilities.

The new Colindale Campus will ensure contemporary educational facilities within a new flexible purpose-built building that showcases education and offers the College a new identity in the local area.

“We are proud of securing an investment that will create an outstanding College asset in the heart of this major regeneration development. This is great news for our future students and

good for the community as a whole. The move might only be about half a mile on the map, but it’s a world away in terms of the opportunities it offers for the future of the College. We have room to expand and can improve our facilities to deliver a real 21st Century learning experience.”

David Byrne Barnet and Southgate College Principal
