KENYATTA UNIVERSITYSCHOOL OF BUSINESS

PREAMBLEThe School of Business is one of the fifteen schools in Kenyatta University. It was established as the Faculty of Commerce in 1988 offering the Bachelor of Commerce programme. Over the years, other programmes have been introduced including various Masters and PhD programmes. The number of students has also increased from 36 at the inception to 7,328 students in July 2012. These students are spread over the main campus, satellite campuses and open learning centres. The school also services a all other schools mainly through the university common unit UCU104 Introduction to Entrepreneurship taken by all first year students in the University.

The School is made up of the dean’s office, associate deans office , PhD and MBA coordination office and three departments namely; Accounting and Finance Department, Business Administration Department, Management Sciences Department, and the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (CEED).

The mission of School of Business is to provide quality business education and training, promote scholarship, service, innovation and creativity and inculcate moral values for sustainable individual and societal development.

Objectives

The main objectives of the school are to:

• Undertake both academia and client driven researchers

• Provide consultancy services in such core areas as project management, human resource development, entrepreneurship development and management, accounting and finance, Marketing and policy analysis and research.

• Promote community service programmes in business and related programmes.

• Promote co-operation and linkages between its core departments on one hand and local, regional and international organizations and institutions on the other.

LinksThe School of Business services the School of Education, School of Humanities and Social Sciences and School of Economics by offering business units to their students. The School also offers Introduction to Entrepreneurship, which is a university common unit to all university students. The School is the link between the central University Administration and Departments.

The School has other links with other Organizations and Institutions in and outside the country to strengthen our capacity. For example we have active reciprocal visits with the federation of Kenya Employers. We have students exchange programme with Jonkoping University, Sweden and students participation in International Summer. The School has active links with Association of African Business Schools (AABS) and by extension with the Global Business Schools Network (GBSN).

The School’s Specialty and BrandingThe school is driven by the desire to offer courses that are tailor made to fit the students’ career choices as well as the contemporary job market demands.The school takes pride in offering relevant courses that enable the students compete in the dynamic global job market as Project Managers, Accountants, Human resource Managers, Bankers, Marketing Executives, and Administrators among others. The school offers academic programmes at diploma, undergraduate, masters and PhD levels. In recognition of the demand for flexible study programmes and the school offers programmes in three different study schedules; namely, regular (daytime), evening, weekend, open learning and institutional based programmes.

Research and Consultancy Activities

The school has the Center for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (CEED), which coordinates Research and Consultancy activities. Through CEED, the school has undertaken several research and consultancy projects.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES ON OFFER

1) UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

1) DIPLOMA IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT There is a constant change of the levels and sophistication of human resource management strategies which lay great demands for human resource management services in a modern establishments and the need to design training programmes that meet the changing needs and demands of human resource management. This requires the training and education of human resource management personnel who posses the basic concepts, skills and visionary necessary to effectively manage the workers in a business establishment. This programme aims to provide knowledge, skills and abilities in human resource management by producing well trained human resource management personnel who can joining the profession and be productive and efficient as well as laying the basis for pursuit of further studies in the profession

Entry requirements• The minimum requirements for entry into the university shall apply.• The common regulations for entry into the School of Business shall

apply.• Mean grade of KCSE C (Plain) OR a Division III in KCE or 1 Principal

and 1 Subsidiary in KACE or equivalent

Mode and Duration of the ProgrammeThe diploma programme will be offered through the full time mode of learning. The minimum duration for the full-time is a period of 18 months.

2) DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENTThe growth of small and medium sized enterprises in the country has of necessity underlined the great need for training the citizens in business management. This has created a great demand for business management manpower capable of managing a wide variety business concerns dealing in delivery of goods and services. This diploma is geared to fulfilling this demand.

The programme aims to provide knowledge, skills and abilities in business management by producing well trained business management personnel who can join the profession and be productive, effective and efficient business managers.

3) BACHELOR OF COMMERCE

This is a degree programme specially designed to equip learners with

theoretical and analytical skills in business and management. The key areas that are covered include actuarial science, management science, accounting, finance, marketing and human resources. The programme aims at producing graduate who can fit in the ever changing business environment.

Entry Requirements

a. To be admitted into the undergraduate degree programme, potential candidate must have attained the minimum requirement of KCSE C+, with C in mathematics and English. OR

b. Candidate must have attained at least a mean Grade of C in KCSE and a Diploma from a recognized institution. Candidates with A-level qualifications or its equivalent will be considered on condition that they attain at least 2 principals and a credit in Mathematics.

Duration and Pattern

a. The duration of the programme is four (4) academic years.

b. The programme is offered during the day from 8.00am to 5.00pm and evening from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

c. Students under this programme are required to take a total of at least 50 units (14 units in the first year, 12 units in the second, third and fourth years of study).

B. POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

1) EXECUTIVE MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (EMBA)

This is an unparalleled executive MBA programme that is designed to prepare Senior Management Executives in both public and private sectors to tackle challenges posed by a dynamic business environment. This programme is unique in that it equips senior executives with OPTIMAL skills necessary for coping with governance and management challenges in Operations; Planning; Total quality management; Marketing; Analytical skills and Leadership. It offers a good blend of theory and practice (industry) in content design. Further, the programme is taught by highly competent and qualified staffs that have constant touch with industry. It offers an ideal setting for exchange of ideas and experiences between students and staff.

Target Group

The programme is intended for middle and top level Managers, Management Consultants, Entrepreneurs, Foreign Envoys, Faith Based Institutions, Local and International NGO’s and Managers of Educational Institutions among others.

Entry Requirements

Applicants to the programme must meet the following entry requirements;

(a) First degree from Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution.

(b) In addition the applicants must have served in a senior management position for at least two years.

Duration and Pattern

(a) The programme is designed to take one academic year consisting of three trimesters.

(b) The programme is offered during evening from 5:30pm - 8:30pm, or Weekend Friday 5.30pm - 8.30 pm and Saturday from 8.00am - 5.00pm

(c) A total of 16 units are taken consisting of 12 taught units and a project equivalent to 4 taught units. Students will be required to take 4 taught units per trimester. During the second trimester, students are in addition required to register for the research project.

The Executive MBA program is offered at the City Campus

2) MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

The Programme differs from the EMBA in terms of the target group, the duration and structure of the programme. The MBA is a two year programme. Unlike the EMBA, the MBA programme offers students diverse areas of specialization in their second year of study.

Students admitted in the MBA programme specialize in any of the following areas:• Marketing Management • Human Resources Management• Strategic Management• Entrepreneurship Management • Finance• Project Management• Management Information Systems

The applicants to this programme must meet the following entry requirements;

(a) A holder of at least an Upper Second Class Honors degree of Kenyatta University or any other University recognized by the university senate. Or

(b) A holder of a Lower Second Class degree of Kenyatta University or any other recognized university with proven ability in research, administration or management. Or

(c) A holder of a degree of Kenyatta University or any other recognized university plus full professional qualification certificate in the relevant area.

Duration and Pattern

a. The duration of the programme is two (2) academic years.

b. The programme will be on offer during the day from 8.00am to 5.00pm and evening from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

c. The Masters programmes consist of coursework, examination and research project.

d. Students are required to take a total of sixteen (16) taught units and a research project equivalent to 4 taught units making a total of 20 units by the end of the programme.

The MBA program is offered in the following campuses

• Nakuru Campus

• Migori Campus

• Embu campus

The MBA is also offered under Open and distance learning through the University open learning Centres.

The rest of the postgraduate programs described below are currently offered at the City Campus only.

3) MASTER OF SCIENCE IN FINANCE

Over the years, the demand from the industry and tertiary institutions for professionally trained individuals in the finance area has been on the increase. Institutions of higher learning in the country have hardly responded to this need

Entry Requirements

Applicants into this programme must meet the following entry requirements;

a. A holder of a Bachelor of Commerce, Second class honors upper division or equivalent from Kenyatta University or of any other recognized university.

b. A holder of Bachelor of Commerce second class lower division or its equivalent from Kenyatta University or any other recognized university, with two year working experience with proven ability in research.

Duration and Pattern

a. The programme of study for the MSc (Finance) degree consists of coursework, examination and thesis.

b. The programme is offered in two modes, regular (daytime) and evening with students in both modes being required to take a total of twenty (20) units by the end of the programme.

c. In the first year of study, a student takes ten (10) core units and any two (2) of approved electives. Such electives may also be taken from the approved list of units from the other programmes within the school.

d. In the second year of study, a student will concentrate on research work and

submit a thesis which is equivalent to 8 units.

4) MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Despite evidence of increased demand for a more focused and specialized postgraduate training in the human resource management area, there has hardly been any corresponding effort to respond to need from the local institutions of higher learning. The programme aims at meeting this challenge.

Entry Requirements

a. A holder of at least an upper second class honors Bachelor of Commerce degree or its equivalent of Kenyatta University or of any other recognized university.

b. A holder of a lower second class Bachelor of Commerce degree or its equivalent of Kenyatta University or of any other recognized university with proven ability in research.

Duration and Pattern

a. The programme of study for the MSc (Human Resource Management) degree consists of coursework, examination and thesis.

b. The programme is offered in two modes, full-time and part-time with students in both modes being required to take a total of twenty (20) units by the end of the programme.

c. In the first year of study, a student takes ten (10) core units and any two (2) of approved electives. Such electives may also be taken from the approved list of units from the other programmes within the school.

d. In the second year of study, a student will concentrate on research work and submit a thesis which is equivalent to 8 units.

5) MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MARKETING MANAGEMENT

Postgraduate training in marketing management calls for a programme requiring more specific entry behaviour to produce marketing professionals for both the private and public sector. There is evidence of increasing demand for such professionals while the development of appropriate programmes has generally stagnated putting pressure on institutions of higher learning to try to meet the challenge. Despite this, there are hardly, any institutions in Kenya with programmes aimed at addressing this challenge, hence the

development of this programme.

Entry Requirements

6) PH.D IN BUSINESS

The growing demand for highly trained and competent personnel in business related areas in and outside academia, has led many in Africa to seek further training abroad to enable them become consultants for both local and international organizations. The PhD in business programme by coursework, examination and thesis is the first of its kind in the region and is unique in that: it provides an alternative to the existing Ph.D programmes offered elsewhere by thesis and in only one area of specialization such as entrepreneurship; Is broad based and covers diverse areas of specialization , including: Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Human Resource, Strategic management, Entrepreneurship, Management Information Systems, Project Management, Actuarial Sciences and Management Science.

Entry Requirements

a) A holder of a non-executive Masters degree in Business from Kenyatta University or any other institution recognized by Kenyatta University Senate.

b) A holder of a Masters degree from Kenyatta University in areas of specialization relevant to disciplines in the School of Business or any other institution recognized by the Kenyatta University Senate.

Duration and Patterna) The programme takes a minimum of three (3) years.b) The programme consists of a total of seventeen (17) units comprising

course work (9 units) and thesis (8 units).c) Students take a total of three (3) coursework units per semester for three

semesters.d) Students embark on the thesis upon completion of the coursework.

Student Profiles and DestinationThe courses offered in the School are a springboard to high profile jobs in the corporate sector like Management, Banking, Insurance, Human Resource Management, Accounting and Finance. There is an increasing demand for trained managers and Human resource managers in both the public and private sector and hence the popularity of our programmes. The courses offered in the School of Business open a wide range of career opportunities from which our students can choose from. The focus of our programmes is also in line with the general thinking world over of job creation rather than job seeking and this is promoted through entrepreneurship programmes offered at the school.
