Page 2: School Brochure

LEGO has been around since the 1930’s and for the first25 years it produced wooden toys. The first plasticLEGO brick was produced in 1958 and those bricks stillconnect with LEGO bricks made today… The nameLEGO is formed from the Danish words “LEg GOdt”,which means to “play well”, in later years it wasdiscover that “LEGO” in Latin means “I assemble” or “Iput together”LEGO Education was founded in 1980 in response todemands from teachers and childcare practitionerslooking to use LEGO products in an educational setting.Today LEGO Education supplies educational solutionsfor children aged 1 ½ to 16+ years and currentlyemploys over 1000 people.LEGO Education’s mission is to “Inspire and develop thebuilders of tomorrow”, with the range of LEGOEducation Products that mission is in motion on a dailybasis.

At Learn it we are proud to present LEGO®Education Workshops for Schools. Weprovide a range of fun and educational daysfor schools in Ireland. Whether as part of ascience week or a one off event as a treatfor your students, we have a workshop foryou…

LEGO® EducationLearn it

Learn it provides a range of services based on LEGOEducation Solutions. We are Ireland’s only authorisedprovider of LEGO Education, something which we arevery proud of. As you might expect, LEGO Educationare very protective of their brand. We have been work-ing with them for the past two years to bring our LEGOEducation classes/camps/workshops to Ireland. Wehave undergone weeks of training with LEGOEducation. We offer a range of in school Workshops. Our qualified staff will come to your school, lots of LEGO in hand, to run some fun packed workshops for your students.

Workshops

Our Early Learningworkshops are suitablefor Junior and SeniorInfants.

School Start themes arebased on LEGO

Education kits using Duplo bricks. As children build and test theirmodels, they explore the ways inwhich familiar objects work. Theyexperiment with concepts such asforce and motion, balance, stability and buoyancy.

Junior & Senior InfantsOur Machines &Mechanisms workshops aresuitable for 3rd and4th Class.

Our workshops help studentsdeepen their understanding ofhow forces can affect motion andexplore concepts of energy.Students build complexmechanisms and use them tomake accurate observations, measurements and records; andeven design their own solutions.

3rd & 4th Class

Our Mindstorms®workshops are suitablefor 5th and 6th Class.

With LEGO®MINDSTORMS®Education students can buildrobots and use software to plan, test and modify sequences ofinstructions from a variety of reallife robotic behaviours.

5th & 6th Class

Our WeDo™ (JuniorRobotics) workshopsare suitable for 1st and2nd Class.

Our WeDo workshopsenable students to

learn, construct and use themotion and tilt sensors along withthe drag and drop software tobring their models to life...

1st & 2nd Class

There are a number of ways we can organise a visit to your school. Every school is different and each of ourWorkshop packages can be tailored to meet your needs.

We can run multiple workshops over the course of one or more days so that every class in the school get’s toparticipate or we can run longer sessions for 1 - 2 classes spanning over the course of a day.

Planning your School Visit

Workshop Themes 2011/2012Junior & Senior Infants:60 min - Early Machines & Mechanisms:

Spinning TopChildren build a spinning top and launcher and learnhow gearing and balance will affect it’s motion.

Measuring CarChildren build a push car and learn how to measuredistances and see how gears works.

5th & 6th Class:90 min - Mindstorms:

Robotic Car Course ChallengeChildren build a motorised car, they will learn about measuringrotations, finding circumferences and plotting. They will thenprogram their car to complete one of our courses.

Bumper CarsChildren will build a motorised car and design a bumper to mount toit. Using touch sensors they will program their car to react when ithits an object.

3rd & 4th Class:75 min - Machines & Mechanisms:

Trundle WheelChildren build a trundle wheel to measure distances, use thewheel to measure areas of surfaces, using fractions to calcu-late distances. Modify wheel to measure longer distances.

Land YachtChildren build a land yacht and learn about how the surfacearea of the sails will effect how the yacht travels, childrenwill calculate surface areas and work out the optimum areafor the perfect sail.

Car ChallengeChildren build a measuring car, the challenge is to modifytheir car to travel the furthest distance. Children learn aboutweight and friction and its effect on vehicles.

1st & 2nd Class:60 min - WeDo (Junior Robotics):

Penalty Shoot outChildren build kickers & keepers and learn about sensors, motion, calculating distance, predictions and have a penalty competition.

Spinning TopChildren build a motorised spinning top, using sensor to control themotor and learn how gearing can increase and decrease speed.

The AlligatorChildren build a alligator, learn about gears and pulleys and how touse a motion sensor to automate the alligator.

In order to make our workshops run as smoothly as possible we do have a number of recommendations andrequirements.

Class Sizes:The ideal class size for each workshop is 20 children or less. While we can accommodate more, the students will getmore from the workshops with classes of these sizes. Our maximum class size is 25 students, for lager classes werecommend splitting the class into two separate workshops or run longer workshops.

Location:Ideally we will be located in one room for the duration of the workshops, children will come from their classes to usto partake in the workshops. This way we can set the room up for the duration of the workshops and save on timebetween workshops. Projectors/Whiteboards would be a bonus as we do have slide shows/demos we can show thestudents. We also require power points in each room as we will be using laptops for certain workshops.
