HOW TO FUND YOUR STUDIES
There is a diverse and ever-expanding number of foreign governments, private organisations and educational institutes who provide academic scholarships to Indian students. While many look upon scholarships chiefly as a means to acquire financial assistance, there are several other benefits. For instance, a Rhodes scholar or a Chevening scholar is recognised and respected throughout their career and becomes part of a selected network of professionals. "The interest in Indian students wanting to pursue their studies in the UK has steadily been increasing over the years. This in turn has led to a rise in the funding opportunities available for them at various universities. The trick is to find the right scholarship to match your academic background," says Rob Lynes, director, British Council India.
I WAS AWARDEDJubilee Scholarship, 2012University of Warwick, UK
HOW IT HELPED METhe Jubilee experience was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. It has undoubtedly made me a better professional in the engineering management field. Studying Engineering Business Management at a renowned department like WMG at Warwick University was quite exciting and challenging at the same time. Module tutors and professors put in incredible effort which helped me build a strong foundation of knowledge and in-depth understanding of how today's engineering business operates. The most enjoyable part of the course was Business Simulation Games played during each module. Another unique aspect of the programme was the series of case-study sessions with expert professionals from companies including Ford, IBM, and BMW. This kind of direct exposure to the industry and such an experiential learning experience proved extremely valuable. At the end of my course I was delighted to have the opportunity to publish a research paper at International Conference with due support from my research supervisor.Upon completion of my masters, the scholarship helped me procure a post study research assistantship position at Warwick University. Professionally, this gave me a first-hand experience of the UK approach. The Jubilee Scholarship programme, has provided me the
opportunity to network and associate with extraordinary range of professionals from different fields.
ALWAYS KEEP IN MINDOne should have an entrepreneurial spirit and a clear career goal.Clearly mention in the application form how the programme will help your career goals.

I WAS AWARDEDChevening Rolls-Royce ScholarshipUniversity of Oxford, UK
HOW IT HELPED METhe scholarship gave me an opportunity to be amongst the best in business education. Being a Chevening Scholar brings tremendous credibility to one's professional and personal life. The learning at Oxford helped me work towards bridging the gap between inventions and innovations. If I have to describe it in one world I would say the whole experience was "transformative". Besides these professional benefits, the scholarship also provided me the opportunity to experience the rich historical and cultural heritage of UK. Watching a live debate at the Sheldonian Theatre Oxford is an experience I shall cherish for life.
ALWAYS KEEP IN MINDIn order to win this prestigious scholarship, one has to bring a distinct uniqueness to the table that separates him/her from the other candidates.Identify your strengths and nurture them. These will help you impress the scholarship panel. Don't take the opportunity lightly or give up before trying.

I WAS AWARDEDCommonwealth Scholarship, 2013Imperial College, UK
HOW IT HELPED METhe Commonwealth Scholarship gave me a life-changing opportunity to pursue Masters in Communications and Signal Processing from Imperial College, London. I feel that I received the best of an all-round education here. I met amazing professors who are proven leaders in their respective fields, got to interact with top-notch colleagues from around the world, tackled a challenging curriculum which is well crafted to address the current challenges in technology and finally the opportunity to experience all the wonderful things that the city of London has to offer. What I liked most about my course was that I could steer my learning towards subjects that interest me the most by choosing from a variety of electives. The scholarship helped me build a strong network with other scholars through various events during our stay in the UK. Furthermore, the Commonwealth Commission continues to engage scholars and fellows worldwide through discussion and other forums. Overall my experience was superb.
ALWAYS KEEP IN MINDWhen you write the essay questions for the scholarship, be yourself. Establish credibility, meaning and uniqueness in what you write in your application.Request people who are writing recommendation letters for you to highlight your research abilities with examples as well as mentioning your strengths and weaknesses. If you make it to the interview round, provide solid reasons to the interviewers as to why you have selected the particular course and the university. It may be advantageous if you already have an offer of admission from one of the universities.
RICHA THATTE, 39Editor-in-chiefSchool Live
I WAS AWARDEDChevening Gurukul Scholarship, 2012London School of Economics, UK
HOW IT HELPED MEBefore I won the scholarship and went to London for three months, I'd been working as a journalist for over 10 years. Apart from getting a wonderful break after working for so long, the interlude opened up a world of new experiences. For me, getting to know and learning from professors of such high repute was definitely the best part of being at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). We also travelled much during this time to places like Edinburgh and the NATO headquarter in Brussels. These trips were highly educational.
ALWAYS KEEP IN MINDBe extremely cautious when filling up your application form. I got rejected for a Chevening scholarship once because I took the form very lightly. I did not elaborate on my achievements thinking I'd explain during the interview but I had to pay for this mistake. How you present yourself can make all the difference. It is crucial to be upfront while citing your achievements and weakness during the application
and avoid being pretentious.During the panel interview one should be optimistic and present themselves with conviction about their return to India and how they plan to contribute to the future development of the country.
