An article in New Scientist magazine indicates those born in late winter and early spring had a higher likelihood of being diagnosed with schizophrenia, while those born in late summer and early fall were less likely to develop the disease.

This has led to many targeted studies that include correlations between the risk of schizophrenia and the location of one’s birth, birth months and other environmental factors.

It suggests adequate Vitamin D supplements during the first year of one’s life plays a role in lessening the risk of developing schizophrenia, especially in boys.

Finally, in an article titled “Schizophrenia, Vitamin D, and Brain Development”, conducted by the School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science at Griffith University in Brisbane, researchers concur a lack of Vitamin D during brain development in the womb “interacts…to alter the trajectory of brain development”.

With so many patients who struggle with the powerful drugs designed to lessen the detriment of schizophrenia, it’s clear much work remains. Is Vitamin D the cure-all researchers have worked so diligently to uncover? That remains to be seen; however, in a society that searches for more natural alternatives in lieu of stronger psychotropic drugs, Vitamin D is a welcomed alternative for many who suffer with schizophrenia.
