WElCOmE TO Our COllEAGuEs & FrIENDs ON BOArD & AshOrE We are proud and very pleased to present to you the first edition of hOmEPOrT PD! After the great success of the former PD Newslet-ter we have chosen a new way of presenting the latest company news to you.

In times of new media we identified this to be the contemporary way to share information from the Headquarters in Hamburg as well as topics worth knowing from your colleagues on board and from our network of agencies. We intend to present the hOmEPOrT PD twice a year and would like to encourage all of you to participate in making hOmEPOrT PD your personnel edition. We would like to receive your articles as well as photos or letters to the editor. In return you will get interesting stories from shoreside as well as details on important technical and regulatory developments such as MLC reported from superintendence. The world of crewing is international, colourful and interesting and at the same time demanding and stressful. We do wish to have a close exchange with our seafarers and participate in the needs and demands as well sharing the joy of shipping with you. The photo

contest is a wonderful evidence of your contribution. Many thanks to all authors for their articles and we are hoping for many more to come. Let us take this opportunity to greet all our friends and colleagues worldwide. Shipping is still in difficult waters, but we are all sitting in one boat and we find a hOmEPOrT in PD.

GrEETINGs FrOm hAmBurG Dear Captain, dear Chief Engineer, dear Officers, dear Crewmembers, After all the wrong assess-ments and expectations we

had in the past five years predicting recoveries of all markets we can say today that things are bottoming out, it cannot get worse. Question is, how long does this status move sideways and in which segments do we see markets recover? Future growth will be substantially less than during the first fifty years of containerisation and overcapacity of ships will remain especially in the container markets. Shipping will never cease to exist - only different than before.

The world will not function without shipping.Cost efficiency, performance and control from all sides are increasing but become more and more necessary in today’s times of especially high fuel- and lubricating oil costs. Additionally you are overburdened with administrative work where we are trying to assist you wherever we can. We are still manoeuvring reasonably successful through these difficult times and this is especially thanks to your great support and assistance, which is being recognized and appreciated every day. Thanks to all our mutual efforts we are still up and running and kicking. Especially a great THANK YOU to all captains, officers and crews on board for taking care to jointly overcome the challenges and obstacles of today.

from a series were consolidated within one technical team in order to concentrate experience, shorten communication and processes and ease the handling. For us you are the „eyes and ears“, which are gathering permanently impressions and views from the daily business and handling of the vessels in operation. We are living from and with your information and feedback, which is essential and important for us in order to assist you wherever we can, to solve problems, to arrange deliveries of needed items and satisfy needs of the whole crew. Therefore let us have your information by email, phone or whatsoever communication link, whenever you deem it necessary. Please do never hesitate to contact the persons in charge of whichever department, if you find it necessary.Last but not least we would like to thank you for the cooperation in sometimes difficult times and appreciate your commitment and your efforts to keep the vessels running in a well maintained condition, always performing on an efficient and safe path. In the future you will find at this place of the newsletter some articles dealing with news, changes, developments and future prospects in regard to your daily business, vessels, and the maritime industry, which are linked to the inspection department, e.g. technical, nautical, safety, security, IT and communication IT matters. Christoph Wehrenberg

GETTING TO KNOW ThE

PD INsPECTIONFor sure all of you know the inspection department and the associated purchasing department. Nevertheless we would like to take the opportunity to draw up the daily process and handling of the before said departments within the first edition of the PD Newsletter in this new format.

The inspection and purchasing department are subdivided in different teams due to the amount of vessels handled and in order to concentrate the processes. Four technical teams, which are fully responsible for the shore side technical management of each single vessel, a nautical inspection team, an ISM/ISPS team, an IT and communication team, purchasing teams, the new building team and the guarantee team are forming the whole departments. In detail, a technical team is handling between 17-22 vessels depending on the amount of the involved technical inspectors. Each technical team is supported by a nautical inspector and two technical purchasers and an assistant. The ISM/ISPS team, the IT/communication team and as well as the new building and guarantee team are working fleet wide depending on the availability and workload. During the last weeks probably everybody noted some changes and movement in the vessel’s distribution within the single inspection teams and the supporting departments; asking their self ‘What’s going on?’. Well, due to changes within the entire fleet, e.g. delivery of new buildings, further management vessels and vessels leaving the fleet or management, the distribution got unbalanced and the workload for single persons accordingly. Therefore it became necessary to find a solution and to change the distribution accordingly. Within this move similar vessels and sister vessels

The last voyage of MV Hammonia Balticum started on the 29th of June 2013 in Pusan (South Korea) to her final destination in India. For this particular voyage Hammonia was able to fix a contract with Emirates, so that Hammonia did not have to bear the full amount of fuel costs. Last port before the final destination Alang in India was supposed to be Pipavav. During discharging the crew prepared the vessel for her last 60sm. The mood on board was falling as most of the crew on board had already served for years on this vessel, for instance the C/O for more than ten years. But before last departure the office in Hamburg announced that our ‘nice lady’ has to sail to Mumbai instead of Alang. So one more trip!Without cargo on board, MV Hammonia Balticum now sailed from Pipavav. The GM was around 5m so she heavily rolled all her way to Mumbai with the most economical speed to safe fuel. The vessel reached Mumbai too late for the high tide which was the prerequisite for beaching the vessel. The crew had to wait for two and a half weeks for the next high tide. Those last weeks were grieving, it was no real fun and quite inconvenient as strict measures had been taken in order to safe as much HFO as possible just to avoid any bunker operations. Air condition was switched off and the only electricity was provided from the emergency generator. It was a totally new experience to take a shower under

the illumination of the bathroom by a flash light. Day by day the humidity in the accommodation was rising and the vessel started smelling like a wet dog.And then the “great day” came: Final order was given to sail MV Hammonia Balticum to the beach. On the 26th of September 2013 exact 12.00lt two pilots boarded the vessel and guided her on her last voyage to the beach, through an overcrowded anchorage. Before beaching her, she was speeded up to ten knots, safe beaching speed. The gap on the beach was less than 30m. Yellow flags on the beach lead her direction. The beach came closer and closer and suddenly - without any big noise or any other sound, the bow of the vessel rose before the whole fore ship and that was it.Both anchors were lowered and the engine switched off by the emergency stop from the bridge, because the engine room including the engine control room was unmanned for safety reason during beaching. In the end everybody made jokes and felt happily relieved. Their service on board MV Hammonia Balticum came to an end and all grieves were gone. It was a great experience for crew as well as for the office. Frank Braune, Hans-Joachim Lübbermann, Jürgen Gottschalk, Heiko Dammann, Gunter Adam

BEAChING OF hAmmONIA BAlTICum Dear Captains on board, Dear Crew,

First of all we would like to thank all of you for your co-operation and efforts taken to keep the vessels running and in good condition.Especially now as times get rougher and more difficult, the shipping market in general is complicated to predict and we are facing daily new situations and new experiences. Good and not so good ones. One experience was the beaching of our mV hammonia Balticum. For this event we had four of our superintendents on board. hope you will enjoy their field report.

STORIES FROM BOARD | FROM PORT TO PORT

of daybreak is always a spectacle, just like passing the Hong Kong waters en-route from Chiwan during the hours of darkness. Though I already had been doing this many times, it will never be the same and always is worth seeing. Very spectacular as well is entering the port of Rio de Janeiro, as vessels have to pass very closely to the magnificent Sugar Mountain, which will reveal more and more of the city behind as the vessel continues its progress inbound. Many times in my life I have been to Rio de Janeiro and I still do remember the only time that I have been ashore; for a wonderful dinner at the beach with some passengers who were on board. At Valparaiso, where I have been many times as well, I was not that lucky because I have never been ashore other than on the wharf: either the timing of being alongside was bad or I had some service for some bridge equipment and could not find time or the weather (swell) was too bad to let me leave the vessel. There are still lots of places I want to see: for example I have never been to New York by ship and neither to the San Francisco nor to the Vancouver/Seattle areas or to New Zealand. Furthermore, I have never been to the Magellan Strait and the Amazon or Orinoco rivers… Though I’m afraid that I will hardly have the possibilities to get ashore and get to see something else than the usual container terminal which is looking just

Austria, the country where I live in, has not always been a country with no direct access to the sea. In the times of the K&K monarchy some large parts of the Adriatic coast belonged to the Austrian Empire. Whoever has been to Trieste or rijeka in the Northern Adriatic sea will have noticed the same architecture like in Vienna. Things have changed, and in the meantime I’m one amongst not so many other seamen living in today’s Austria.

Pretty often, when I am at home, I am getting asked which of the places that I had seen I liked most - and I don’t know the answer any more. Years ago I would have known immediately, based on the amenities awaiting the seafarers who were always going ashore in groups. Or, I remember one of my colleagues who was taking a 5-days leave and travel through all the southern part of Brazil - during one port stay of course. Nowadays, when it comes to ports, the question normally is about the problems that we might encounter, hence, now the answer would be : those ports at which I would expect the least difficulties for the vessel. Besides these thoughts there are, of course, other items that put some highlight on a place above others: for example, entering the port of Hong Kong in the hours

the same like all the others all over the world, I like to get to places and to enter ports very much, which are unknown to me (always hoping for the next contract, though). Since the implementation of the ISPS Code, I have the feeling that seafarers are sometimes treated more like prisoners. Even if there would be the time, more and more ports have made it pretty difficult to get ashore: quite often it’s a time consuming challenge to get from the vessel to the gate and pass the immigration (always remember that you will have to get back on board in time…!). Other ports/countries have restricted the shore leave hours by requesting the seafarer to pass the immigration office in and out – making it virtually impossible right from the beginning (not to talk about the TWIC in the USA…).Life at sea definitely has changed, not only due to 9/11. I still remember when I was a young 3rd officer on MV “Norasia Susan”, the so called “ship of the future“, managed by Peter Döhle. The vessel was engaged in Europe to Far East trade (in those days “Far East” meant the route from Singapore via Hong Kong to Taiwan, Korea and Japan - there weren’t any Chinese ports in the normal itinerary). We were in close contact due to meet our sister vessel “Norasia Samantha” and already days before the meeting the

two sparkies (radio operators) of both ships exchanged information: “How is your schedule, when will we meet and where…” and at the actual day all crew on both ships were on the bridge wings, the whistles were blown, and all binoculars were used to distinguish somes friends on the other vessel: we all were used to know each other! Nowadays it might happen that we are passing a couple of PD ships on the same day or that we are berthed close by at the same port - without even realizing… Being the first (and most likely also the last) seafarer in the family, probably the major reason that made me select this career was to “see the world”. This has changed; nowadays there are by far better means to discover the world than going to sea. Nonetheless, I still like my profession very much, but for much different reasons than when I was young. Capt. Joachim Arndt

Capt. Arndt started his first contract with PD in 1987 as Third Officer on MV Arkona. Throughout the years he has developed a successful career within the conpany and recently brought MV Emirates Pearl into service.

DöhlE PhIlIPPINEs BAhAY NG mGA mArINO Döhle haus manila, located at the corner of sen. Gil Puyat Avenue and Bautista street, ma-kati City, home of our trusted and loyal seafa-rers, an iconic symbol at the heart of seafarers’ communities and metro manila business. A Döhle investment recognizing the importance of our Filipino seafarers in the success of the Döhle Group as well as our loyal customers. “Isang tahanan nilang maituturing habang ma-layo sa kanilang pamilya.”

Döhle Haus Manila is a true symbol of the success of Filipino seafarers. Inaugurated in November 2011 by Mr. Jejomar Erwin Binay, Mayor of Makati City (Son of VP Binay) and Mr. Jochen Döhle the Haus also provides state of the art modern office facilities ensuring the well being of the office staff for all Döhle Companies in the Philippines; namely DSPC who provide a full range of ship management services, Döhle Philman and Döhle Seafront our trusted partner manning agencies, Döhle Corporate Academy & ETCC who provide complimentary training and career path education for our seafarers. “Sa Döhle may magandang kinabukasan ang pamilya ng bawat marinong Pilipino.” The 100-bed dormitory provides a safe home with spacious and comfortable accommodation. A safe berth to relax and catch up with fellow seafarers, whilst waiting to process documents, undergo medicals, attend PDOS and trainings in the ETCC, debriefing and collecting final wage accounts after disembarking. We are proud to recognize our seafarers with awards for their loyal service, and provide family support programs such as HMO benefits. “Naiintindihan ng Döhle ang pangangailangan ng bawat pamilyang Pilipino.” We ensure every loyal seafarer the security of next employment as soon as returning from the vessel so that they enjoy their vacation with their family in a relaxed and worry-free atmosphere. “Mahalaga na masaya ang buong pamilya.” Not only in the Philippines Döhle has a vision for the

future, creating a centre of excellence for maritime services with our seafarers at its heart. We will support your dreams and assist you achieve your goals. “Ang inyong propesyon bilang marino ay hindi lang nagtata-pos sa karagatan.” With our recent tie up with the Philippines largest banking and retail organization, Banco de Oro (BDO), we have created a new environment providing modern and efficient banking services as well as a package of financial support services from home loans to SM Store benefits. Up to now more than 2,100 accounts have been opened with BDO by our seafarers. Whilst at the Dorm, seafarers can also visit BDO Dian St. branch to open new accounts. Döhle recognizes the

importance of family values in the Filipino community and demonstrates this through the family support units within each agency. “Ipinapangako ng Döhle ang taos pusong suporta at pagpapahalaga sa kapakanan ng bawat pamilya ng mga matatapat na mga marino.” In June 2013, Vice President Jejomar Binay and a high ranking delegation from the Philippine Maritime commu-

nity visited Germany and addressed a distinguished audience of German Shipowners and Maritime stake-holders. VP Binay reassured the audience that the ad-ministration of President Aquino was fully committed to supporting the Maritime Industry and recognizes the importance of the Filipino seafarers as the back-bone of global shipping. “Pangako ng gobyerno na isu-long ang kapakanan ng bawat Marinong Pilipino.” There are unspoken yet inspiring stories of Filipino seafarers whilst onboard, their courage is no less re-nowned. But their contributions to the country are equally analogous to the honour and glory brought about by Pinay beauty titlists who are recently making waves in the beauty pageant arena. After a recent win by Mutya Johanna Datul as Miss Supranational 2013 in Minsk, Belarus, the Philippines has also just bagged one of the most prestigious beauty title with Megan Lynne Young winning Miss World 2013, making her the first ever Filipina to win the coveted blue crown after 62 years of participation. “Mabuhay ang ganda ng Pinay, mabuhay ang kisig ng mga Marinong Pinoy!”

VIDEO BRIEFINGS | AGENCY NEWS

Briefings used to be handled in a quite traditional way at PD & hAmmONIA. The leading personnel would visit the PD headoffice at least once a year. In addition each new hired and every officer who was up for promotion would get invited to hamburg to be personally interviewed. Although this tightened personal relationships said arrangement led to additional cost and was very time consuming when it comes to travelling. recently the IT department installed a new video conference system that allows personal bonding even over major distances.

We would like to share with you some latest news when it comes to our crewing activities worldwide. As you all know, the briefing is an important process that gives both, the senior management and office staff, the opportunity to meet each other and set up a good future collaboration. In addition to this, the officer can get familiarized with the company and the single departments involved by visiting our head office in Hamburg. It mainly affects all newcomers and newly-promoted Masters & Chief Engineers. Recently, a new IT solution was introduced in the PD headquarter and in most of our manning agencies that assists us to streamline the contact with our sea staff without being necessary to visit the office any longer. This procedure is called Video-Briefing, it is in force since April 2013 and is used by both, PD & Hammonia. The idea behind comes not only from our colleagues here in the office but as well as a response to our long-time seafarers’ request in order to save time by travelling. Additionally, it is regarded as an efficient solution for saving extra costs generated by transportation, accommodation or visa arrangements and provides more flexibility to the office and the seafarers. Furthermore, it is considered as useful tool to receive all necessary information from the owners in regard to the next employment and particulars by simply visiting one of our Döhle Manning Agencies (Video-Conference is available at the PD Headquarter

in Hamburg, DMA Poland , DMA Romania, DMA Ukraine & the Döhle Haus Manila - in other locations compatible software exists). Generally the procedure can be described as follows: The Crewing Department sets up an agenda with all departments that will take part in the actual Video-Briefing (e.g. Nautical & Technical Inspection, ISM/ISPC & MLC, Crewing & Accounts, IT, Technical Purchase, Insurance & Operations) and distributes the schedule to everyone involved. In the meantime, a briefing-pack that contains all necessary documents is uploaded to a web-platform in order to enable our colleagues in the Manning Agency to provide the re-spective officer with his handout. In some occasions the video briefing might only involve the inspection department to clarify some outstanding matters. But please remember - even though the Video-Briefing procedure is now in place this does not mean that office briefings in general are cancelled.

In general, this IT innovation has been met with a lot of interest and enthusiasm. It represents new means for improving the contact with our seafarers and manning agencies all over the world, regard-less of time difference, long-distance or visa requi-rements. At the same time it can be seen as a fast solution provider in case of any sudden emergency that might arise. Anca Dobre

since 20th of August 2013 the maritime labour Convention (mlC) is in force and expands the international maritime regulatory regime, beside the key ImO sOlAs, mArPOl & sTCW in international shipping.

Although we fortunately fulfilled almost all minimum requirements and partially far exceeded before MLC went into force, the implementation of MLC is very sensitive especially for our crew on board. Seafarers need special protection from “black sheeps” on the market, MLC provides comprehensive rights and pro-tection, set minimum requirements to work on a ship and strengthen enforcement mechanisms at all levels. In our company, from the smallest Manning Agency office up to the crew managers, everyone is certified or in the final certification process. We demand this from ourselves in order to keep the standard as high class shipowner.Even though MLC came into force this year we are working on the implementation of this convention since several years. In the past year a MLC-Manual was developed, Seafarers’ Employment Agreements adjusted on international standards and MLC concer-ning certificates were amended. In general Maritime Labour Convention controls:

With the help of our crews also all our ships have to be inspected in order to receive the MLC-Certificate. During this inspection which is conducted by the Classification Society or Flagstate representative, usually the SEAs and certificates of the crew will be checked, the accommodation including cabins and recreation rooms will be inspected, plus all rooms which have to be especially hygienic like galley, provision rooms and hospital controlled.Summarized the task of MLC is to develop minimum requirements for social working and living conditions on board in international shipping. We don’t want to me-rely reach this, but rather fulfill outstandingly as a high class shipowner.

PHOTO CONTEST | SPECIAL

2013 PD PhOTO CONTEsTIn spring 2013 the first Photo Contest in the history of the PD Group was launched and the newly formed marketing team was quite curious how the maritime world of Döhle would react. half a year later we are very happy to announce our 15 winners and would like to thank all contributors for the great insights into their daily lifes at sea and ashore!

Amongst the roundabout 400 pictures that were sent to us by e-mail we discovered many very impressing and sometimes stunning shots. In this first edition of homeport PD we are presenting a few of those photos, for example the submission of Capt. George

Mazgareanu (PD Photo Contest 2013 - 14th Place) who made it to the cover. Some more pictures will be published with the annual Döhle 2014 Calender which we try to make available on board as well.It was not easy for the jury to appoint the 15 „best shots“ as a lot of photos caught the eye and sometimes touched the heart, but finally they made a decision. Nevertheless we enjoyed all submissions and were very happy to take part of the maritime world of Döh-le on board of the vessels. On behalf of the whole PD Group we would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2013 PD Pho-to Contest. We are looking forward to seeing you again next year! Lisa Schröder
