2 | ST. RAPHAEL PARISH · OSHKOSH

Some of you may remember the late Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who served as a bishop in New York until his death in 1979. He is now being considered for sainthood. Bishop Sheen had an immensely popular TV show called "Life is Worth Living" that even won an Emmy Award! His lectures from these shows were even compiled in written form and I have them in the parish rectory. Fulton Sheen is known for having said: "there are not 100 people who hate the Catholic Church; but there are millions who hate what they believe the Catholic Church to be." I've found this comment to be really insightful because it explains how people often dislike some aspect of Catholicism, even though they don't really understand it. Many people know 'what' the church teaches on a particular topic, but they don't really know 'why' the church teaches what it does. One of my favorite parts of being a priest is getting to meet with people one-on-one as they are studying some aspect of our faith, and they will sometimes have a breakthrough moment in faith: when they've been struggling with some teaching or aspect of Catholicism and then, after deeper study, they come to say, "Wow! That really does make sense! The Church isn't crazy." Every single one of us can grow in faith (self-included). Never lose your hunger for truth. Realize that faith formation is something we need to keep doing through-out our lives. Keep asking good, honest questions. Jesus promised that whoever seeks, will find. Take advantage of our adult faith formation opportunities such as our Bible Studies, That Man is You, Women's Book Club, and our various prayer opportunities. If you are looking for a good book recommendation, just ask myself, Fr. Tom, or Betty! During the Christmas season we gave away free copies of the book Why I Am Catholic and You Should Be Too. The book does a great job explaining the 'what' of Catholic teaching. If you don't have it, its worth even picking it up yourself at the local Catholic goods store, On This Rock. Read it, share it with a family member, co-worker, or friend. That's a great and simple way to do some evangelization! If we commit ourselves to seeking the truth, we will no doubt encounter the One who said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life." (John 14:6) Gratefully,

Fr. Matthew

Will you spend one hour with Jesus? If Jesus invited you to sit down with him for an hour to talk, wouldn’t you jump at the opportunity? We have that opportunity every single day. Eucharistic Adoration is spending time in the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

The Divine Mercy Adoration Chapel is a citywide perpetual adoration chapel open 24/7 year-round. While it is located at Most Blessed Sacrament’s St. Mary site, the Adoration Chapel belongs to ALL of our parishes and our Oshkosh community.

Visitors to the chapel can spend their time with Jesus any way they want. You may want to bring your own prayer books or use the books in the chapel, read the Bible, pray the rosary, or just sit and relax and enjoy the peace that comes from simply being in the presence of God.

You may feel a bit intimidated visiting for the first time or struggle to establish a prayer life. Don’t let this discourage you. The mere fact that you take time out of your day to spend an hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament pleases Him very much and is in itself a prayer of great faith.

The Divine Mercy Adoration Chapel is located at 605 Merritt Avenue in Oshkosh. To learn more about visiting the chapel or to receive an access code, contact (920) 310-2112, or visit https://mbsoshkosh.com/adoration-chapel. For a list of available hours, visit divinemercy3.weadorehim.com.

Remember, Perpetual Adoration isn’t just a commitment for an hour, a week or even a year. It is an ongoing, lasting, and permanent gift of our faith.

6 | ST. RAPHAEL PARISH · OSHKOSH

Reflecting on the Scriptures

“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you,

to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well, from the person who takes your cloak do

not withhold even your tunic, lend expecting nothing back, stop judging, stop condemning, forgive, give.” Whoa!

Is it even possible to live up to these words? Today’s Gospel can cause us to feel inadequate, defeated,

challenged, and despairing. Why? Because each of us is aware of our weaknesses, shortcomings, and doubt

that we’ll ever be able to live up to love in the way Christ asks of us.

The truth is that most Christians fall dramatically short of what Jesus asks of us. To those who oppose us or hurt

us, we are much more likely to respond, “Go to hell!” Unbelievers peering in from the outside of the glass of

Christianity observe that as “Christians”, we are certainly not Christ-like. Mahatma Gandhi discerningly observed.

“I like your Christ; I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” It’s the ultimate

challenge to not hate those who oppose us, to not hate our enemies, to continue to have gracious and forgiving

hearts in the face of misunderstanding, bitter opposition, jealousy, anger, hatred, mistreatment. In our

humanness, our natural instinct is to return hurt for hurt, to not let it go, but to harbor feelings. In the end, we hold

ourselves hostage in a miserable state.

Jesus Himself lived the ultimate model of how we are to respond to hatred, to abuse, to our enemies. Jesus, in

being taken hostage in the garden turned the other cheek, did not return blow for blow, did not harbor anger and

bitterness toward his persecutors. Rather, Jesus goes so far as to say, “Father forgive them; they know not what

they do”.

So, I ask myself if I have taken this very direct instruction from Jesus to “Love your enemies” seriously. Or are

these words just nice thoughts from Jesus that I don’t apply to myself? If I am courageous enough to hold myself

accountable, how am I going to authentically love my enemies, to lend and not be concerned about my worldly

goods, to forgive people who don’t “deserve” my forgiveness?

This transformation in me is the inner work of God. If I desire to be as loving and forgiving as the One who loves

me, I need to spend more time with Him. To enjoy the company of Jesus, who loves me without judgment, is to

become more like Him. To ponder the Stations of the Cross, of how Jesus was betrayed by friends, of how he

didn't return insult or violence on those who were flogging him is to learn self-control and to refrain from returning

hurt with more hurt. I come to the Table to receive Jesus, to be transformed into the loving, compassionate,

forgiving image of Jesus. hen, and only then, will I be a true Christian, an authentic witness of Christ in the world.

Betty Schwandt - Pastoral Associate

The bishop's appeal is a good time to consider this verse in today’s gospel:

“Give, and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

Pray about it. God bless you today and always.

Every so often someone will call and request a Prayer Shawl. Prayer Shawls are knit and/or crocheted by women in our parish. Each is crafted with prayer, soft yarn (provided, along with a variety of patterns) and love. If you would like to be a part of this ministry - or if you would like to request a Prayer Shawl - call the office at 233-8044 for more information.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES Leslie was nervous. She had been preparing for this moment all her life. Now it was here. She had been selected to sing a major role with a renowned opera company. It was a dream come true. On opening night, just minutes before the curtain was to go up, Marjorie, another cast member, found Leslie nervously pacing backstage. “Are you OK?” she asked. All Leslie could do was nod. Her throat felt tight and, to tell the truth, she wasn’t sure that she was OK at all! Marjorie knew the feeling. Years earlier Marjorie had been the one going through first-night jitters. She remembered that tightness, the feeling that her mouth was lined with cotton. That was when Linda, a woman four or five years older than Marjorie, had stopped to ask how she was doing. Linda’s kindness and concern had been just what Marjorie needed to help her overcome her stage fright. What Leslie didn’t know – and what Marjorie wasn’t telling her – was that Marjorie had been passed over for the very part that Leslie was to sing. Marjorie knew the piece; she had performed it many times. But the director said she was too old and chose Leslie instead – just as, years earlier, he had chosen Marjorie to replace Linda. Marjorie could easily have taken advantage of this opportunity to kill Leslie’s confidence, to pin her to her nervousness in order to show the director that he had made a mistake. But Marjorie didn’t do either of those things. Instead she lifted Leslie up, as Linda had lifted her. “God has delivered your enemy into your grasp…”. “To you who hear I say, love your enemies…be merciful…forgive…give…”. Marjorie loved as she had been loved and gave as it had been given to her, even when it was within her grasp to destroy. Instead of attacking, Marjorie chose to recognize Leslie’s talent and support her. Do we do as much? Are we merciful or judgmental toward those by whom we feel threatened? Do we do to others as we would have them do to us? By what measure do we choose to be measured?

Book Discussion

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America is a book written by Barbara Ehrenreich from her perspective as an undercover journalist. Ehrenreich left her home, took the cheapest lodgings she could find, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered. Moving from Florida to Maine to Minnesota, she worked as a waitress, a hotel maid, a cleaning woman, a nursing-home aide, and a Wal-Mart sales clerk. She lived in trailer parks and crumbling residential motels. This book uncovers what she found. Discussion of the first half

of the book - Sunday, March 24 at 4pm. Discussion of the last half of the book – Sunday,

April 7 at 4pm. Both sessions will be held at St. Raphael Church. Book can be pur-chased on Amazon or borrowed from your local library.
