• Taylorism (1880’s – 1910’s)

• Scientific Management (1910’s – 1960’s) and later

• Industrial Engineering (1960’s - ……), including operations research, MTM, process engineering, Efficiency movement, etc…

• Lean Manufacturing, Six-Sigma & combining both

• !!!!!!

Chronological Sequence

This doesn’t mean that any of the previous phases or

terms has been obsolete, the fact is that each phase

has developed from its predecessor as a result of

development and needs of time

Key Philosophy The truth of this fact is also perfectly clear in the case of two men working together. If you and your workman have become so skillful that you and he together are making two pairs of shoes in a day, while your competitor and his workman are making only one pair, it is clear that after selling your two pairs of shoes you can pay your workman much higher wages than your competitor who produces only one pair of shoes is able to pay his man, and that there will still be enough money left over for you to have a larger profit than your competitor.

1. Replace working by "rule of thumb," or simple habit and common sense, and instead use the scientific method to study work and determine the most efficient way to perform specific tasks.

2. Rather than simply assign workers to just any job, match workers to their jobs based on capability and motivation, and train them to work at maximum efficiency.

3. Monitor worker performance, and provide instructions and supervision to ensure that they're using the most efficient ways of working.

4. Allocate the work between managers and workers so that the managers spend their time planning and training, allowing the workers to perform their tasks efficiently.

Taylor's four principles

Can you see it? These were the basics for IE as we know it in

Leoni in terms of main activities like work and motion study,

production study, method study, Random Activity Sampling,

etc….
