“Before and after the world comes the sign, and in the sign, the void where we grow. Only the sign can be seen, being a wound. But the eyes lie.”

The Book of Questions. Edmond Jabes.

    THE SCION AND ITS STOCK

The performance of a graft unveils a relationship between the architecture and its site. Through time, the wound undergoes a series of changes that work both internally and externally. Upon an infliction of a blade, the wound progresses through a stage of self- reconstruction in which its internal mechanisms work to generate a new state of existence. This thesis has been a search into both the poetic and mythic mechanics of constructing the architecture in this progression. It begins with a cut.

    THE TECHNOLOGIZED LANDSCAPE

The site is characterized through bodies of stories built within and around the soil, wind, water and vegetation. These indeterminate cycles composed of its anthropomorphic enactments constantly generate and decay the landscape toward a state of being. The landscape is never characterized as a static entity but one that is incessantly trans-mutative.

PRELIMINARY INDENTATIONS (HOW TO WOUND THE LAND)- UNFINISHED DRAFT

Within the parameters and conditions present at Kil-Cona Park, located in the northeast side of the City of Winnipeg, . My working method straddles between the evolving com-plexities of the site and its ongoing relationships with the poetics, myths, materials and unexpected results yielding from constant experimentation. The Laboratory Manual exercises have become an experimental analogue into the conceptual relationship between a structure and a site. The exercises used in performing the grafts, serve as a point of departure in understanding the scale and temporal condition of the site, in which the procedures necessary to perform them challenges the way we begin to recondition the site.

    AN ARCHITECTURE OF MATTER

The first term has culminated towards a proposal for designing a “contemporary garden” for the winter term. The definition of gardens become redefined and reinvented through the parameters of the landscape in which the architecture works as an organic infra-structure in framing its landscape entropic dance. On a poetic level, the garden de-scribes a way of inhabiting the landscape through an immersion into the site’s dynamic processes, one that meditates upon a state of animacy as a way to configure and frame the architectural spaces. It is within the silence and voids of the landscape, that we hear it echo back.
